I'd love an update to happen. I sold my 15" Powerbook G4 1.5GHz on eBay on 6 September in anticipation of an imminent update. Looks like I miscalculated!

I have been researching "Random Shutdown Syndrome" recently - tried to add an article on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_Shutdown_Syndrome
but someone marked it for deletion claiming it is too much of a neologism.
Anyway during my research for the article I discovered it's a pretty big problem. There are 13500 google results for the phrase "Random Shutdown Syndrome". It's appeared in print in at least one place. Macintouch's estimates were worrying - 19% of March MBPs are subject to random shutdowns. So if they're trying to fit more stuff in there (eg faster GPU, 2.33GHz CPU) they may want to be sure there are no thermal problems. OTOH, it is totally ridiculous that the price hasn't changed in nine months. No other company could get away with it. It must be the Jobs Reality Distortion Field at work!

Best wishes for 9am Cupertino time everybody!

possible week 41 MBP?

Reading through some other forums on macrumors i read that it seemed no one had received a MBP that was built after week 38....

My friend has received an invoice for his MBP, which he is yet to receive, with the following serail number

W86410XXXXX

Am i right by teling him that his MBP is a week 41 build???

He got this invoice this morning, could he be getting a new MBP?

Fingers crossed for today or tomorrow!

I just have an idea about what update to expect (when it comes) and why. I think we're definitely going to see more than a cpu update. Why? Because Apple ain't in the business of turning down prices, and when they update, their products are always competitive when it comes to price. So to get the Macbook Pro worth $2000 they have to do a lot of stuff. I'm not excactly sure what, but it warrents more than just a new cpu. It would probably get more ram too. What specs does comparable $2000 laptops have today?

Don't see any chances. I think that will be April '07 with new processor all together. Think about it....if they will release today or even next week you will have to wait few weeks to get it or even more. Not enough time to make before Christmas so forget MBP as a present. And that will not be beneficial for Apple at all. So conclusion again.....next year.
It doesn’t make me happy since my powerbook is technically dead and I need some upgrade soon. But that’s the way it is…..Apple monopoly. I wouldn’t switch for windows anyway….would you?

I don't know if anybody has mentioned this before i scanned the last few posts but i could not see this being mentioned. It looks like the shipping times for the 15.4 inch MBP in the UK has been put back to three days now. I think that it was at 24 hours yesterday but it is at three days today. Maybe this is a good sign that a new model is coming soon. The 17 inch MBP is still at 24 hours dispatch but that could be because the 17inch MBP was released after the 15.4 models.

I ordered an MBP last night to see when it would ship(not BTO) because I want the free printer with it...I called back pretty much right after I saw it would ship today and asked them to cancel it, they said they couldn't cancel it because the order was placed about a half hour or so ago but they would send it to their customer service team and they would cancel it. When she asked me why I wanted to cancel it I said I was waiting for new MBPs...well, that was last night at 10EST, and now its 6:50 A.M and it says its still shipping today....a sign they're coming today perhaps?

Or their customer service team is not working too fast at the moment, or the system didn't refresh itself quick enough...etc.

I have a not so good feeling about today... :(

Bog all chance of them getting updated today as I am buying one tomorrow. The good news is that means they will be released next week.

No it wont, they are waiting for my order. And since i refuse to give up now after 4 months waiting, the new MBP will never be released. Sorry guys!

By this logic why can't Apple completely ignore Intel's roadmap, and instead dole out technology only as they deem fit?

If that's the case... Fast forward on to 2010 and perhaps only then we will see the next Clovertown Mac Pros "Oh, for $3000 you are only entitled to 8 x 2.66Ghz of processing power to run OS X. We do not sell hardware nor software you see, we sell the right to enjoy the OS X experience. How much you pay is completely dependent on us!"

What kind of spoiled a$$ brat gets a MBP for Christmas?!?!?!

Oh, I know...one who doesn't even know how to use it!

I can't see Apple trying to line up their professional line of hardware with the holiday shopping season, unless they want little Johnny's parents to skimp on the presents to buy themselves the pro notebook ;)

That's exactly it. They will try to stay with the times if it suits them. If not, well they can do whatever they want, so it doesn't matter to them one way or another.

Indeed, they will wait until next WWDC before they put Merom (1) in, and then save santa rosa and the others for the following year. Apple needs a constant stream of releases to stay in the news ya know

Not necessarily. Shopping season it’s a SHOPPING SEASON, which means you spend more than usually and also you please yourself buying a present for yourself, for instance a…….MBP. It also means that Apple got more probability to sell more…..so for them its really important to release product in good time. This time it’s about run out in my opinion, but hopefully I am wrong.;) ;) ;)

Just out of curiosity, will you be willing to acknowledge that you were wrong if it turns out that Apple had a good reason to delay the MBP upgrade (e.g. a significant re-design to accommodate hotter components), or will you continue to pout because a profitable corporation continues to make record profits running their business as they see fit?

I'm as eager as anyone for a merom-upgrade to the notebook line, and given the obvious high level of interest in the market place, I can't imagine that Apple is happy about being the last manufacturer to get such a product onto the market. But one of the things I appreciate about Apple's products is that they are generally well-designed and well-tested, making them generally very reliable. I would much prefer them to do the design and QA work necessary to ensure the the merom MBP is a reliable, high-performance notebook computer, even if this means coming to market a month behind their competitors, than have them slap the new chip into the existing MBP, and hope not too many of them overheat.

Apple has a reputation for selling high-quality, well-designed products. They have had some notable QA issues of late, and I'm sure that they want to preserve their hard-won reputation, so they can't afford more wide-spread 'issues' with their products.

If, on the other hand, Apple does release a simple cpu-swapped MBP, with no significant changes in components or design after all this time (we know they've had pre-production sample chips since July), then I'm with you... that entitles us to some serious pouting and sarcastic derision of Apple for poor performance on this revision.

Cheers

an April 7th update would be ONE YEAR between updates. There is absolutely NO WAY IN HELL apple will wait for one entire year to update their flagship portable. no way. impossible. absolutely not.

the absolute latest we will see update is MWSF, but i am betting we see updates before thanksgiving.

Who wants to guess how many MBPs they will sell in March '07?

For once I really hope Microsoft steals some marketshare in the mp3 arena from the iPod. Others have to work for their cash, perhaps Apple should too.
