Apple has declared for Blu-Ray and I'm guessing we'll see a BD-50 R/W drive in the Mac Pro as soon as Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic or whoever finally releases one that works 100%. The current crop of BluRay writers are complete *****. Avid just released their new version of Studio Toolkit for the PC which has very minimal BluRay support. And that's about it so far for software out there... I predict we'll see a Blu-Ray option for the Mac Pro and Blu-Ray update to DVDSP/FCS at MWSF.
Butthead said:Yeah we may well see Blu-Ray in the Mac Pro (already have the extra drive bay waiting), but this is a laptop thread is it not?
LOL, I guess AV didn't read my prior posts. Current & past DVD drives in various Apple products have not worked 100%. The Panasonic drives in recent Apple laptops don't work well, have problems writing to certain brands of DVD's; aren't even recognized at all, with some, slow, slow write times, etc. Same could be said with for past Apple software, if you had been to any of the lafcpug.org meetings, been to one of the HiDef film-festivals with roundtable discussion with the filmmakers & DP's- you'd know that FCP 3 sucked in a lot of ways. It was supposed to support certain frame sync rates, when in fact it was well known that FCP did not...quoting one British film maker/producer on this "Apple is full of ****, FCP cannot do this." Real pros when they get a stable setup of a FC to work with, never upgrade the the most current version of software for projects that involve making a living $$$, they can't afford the screw-ups. They use updated versions on an experimental basis until all the bugs get worked out, or there are workarounds that allow for beginning a productive workflow.
Go and read http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/, drive compatibility database, you'll find people replacing those Panasonic drives with Pioneer. There are plenty of products that don't work all that well, but they get shipped never the less. Apple can't use a Sony Blu-Ray drive as they are currently only making a tray loader for their laptop (uh, did you not read my prior post links on Blu-Ray???). Panasonic has shown a prototype Blu-Ray slot load drive made for laptops, that would be the most likely one to be included in a MBP, whenever it becomes available. End of story.
Newegg has the desktop burners @$699, expensive as all new products will be until economy of scale catches up (anyone remember how much the original DVD burners in the Apple desktops cost...almost the same as what Blu-Ray are going for now), which could be less than a year. Original DVD-burners dropped precipitously in price in the 1st year, same will happen with Blu-Ray. On a laptop, initially it would probably add not much more, than a $300-500 option.
One thing for sure, this thread is rehashing everything over and over to the tune of nearly 100-posts/day, if they don't come out with a simple speed bump a la iMac with just the C2D, then by the end of November this thread my well be the longest ever on MR![]()
suwandy said:Did anyone ever think of the possibility that the reason the number of MB and MBPs were so lacking that it was not because Apple was planning to ship new products but because Sony pulled out so many batteries that there weren't enough to ship back to customers+ship new-non-burning-ones to the laptop vendors like Apple? Did anyone check the other brands to see whether they have been experiencing lack of stock similar to how MB and MBP?
I hope this isn't the reason tho. I'm still holding on to a post that mentioned that an Apple store employee cancels an order from a customer, encouraginghim to wait until MacExpo in London![]()

In a word, no. Apple has not historically updated hardware on the eve of quarterly earnings reports. Tomorrow Apple may, however, announce the shipping availability of the new Intel-based Xserves and the new iPod Shuffle.aaronb said:Is anybody expecting a release tomorrow?
I agree, IMO they will release the new mbp next tuesday on the heels of their successful Q3 numbers, and during mac expo london.DHagan4755 said:In a word, no. man i can't wait...............you might've been able to full people if you didn't throw in the ipod and 30"mbp. and the 4gb of ram with santa rosa, it should be 8gb. Well, lets all just keep dreaming.n00bst3r said:I just got off the phone with Steve and he said that tomorrow they will be announcing Conroe iMacs and C2D/Santa Rosa MB/MBP. The iMac and MBP will both get Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo drives and have the ability to go 4 GB of RAM. Also both will ship with Leopard ahead of schedule. As an added bonus they are throwing in free iPod AV's with the purchase (Only to MacRumors members mind you) Oh yea and the new chassis is gonna be all new (he was pretty secretive about it) and supposebly the MBP comes with a Fuel Cell versus Li-Polymer battery. Also expect a 30" MBP by December.
Hold off for a few more hours guys!
