Q figures will not be way off. And no offense taken to Europeans abroad, but you've always had to wait for the crumbs off the table, so to speak. All US-based Apple Stores show PLENTY of MBP stock. So while the Gravis Store shows zero, that's hardly a reliable factor into any predictive formula.

That said, who wouldn't want to BELIEVE and hope for an update on 10/24? We should name it and claim it.

However, I find it strange that not only can you not buy a C2D system, you can not even pick up a CD system in Germany.
With most of the promotional events gone bye and preparation for the Holiday Season under way one could expect that they would be able to fill their distribution pipe.
I can not believe that the American market sucks up MB/MBP faster now than a few weeks ago, when one could walk into the store and pick one up.

The German Online Apple store lists 3 days for the 1.83 Macbook. And these Macbooks are still comming directly from China and not from the European distribution center, so delivery will take about 2-3 weeks.
I think this can only mean two things: either the market sucks them up faster than they can be produced and Apple needs not to update anything. Or something is in preparation and only a small fraction of MB/MBPs are still build using CD, while they prepare to hit the market with the C2D any time soon.

Ok so I think that everyone missed my point.

I am a student and I am half way through the semester and I still don't have a laptop. I can thank Apple for this, as they have been taking forever to make the MBP competitive. Like I said before, if the new MBP had come out last week, they would have a good $2600 to $3200 of my money right now.

But early this week I went to Best Buy to look at what else is out there (since the current Dells are hideous) and was pleasently supprised at the HP's that were out there.

I went home and got online and found that this quarter HP overtook Dell as the largest PC manufacturer, and was second to IBM in reliability (the survey was rediculous though).

The next step was to see what HP had to offer. I got on their website and maxed out their 15" model. $1600! I bought it.

I was never going to be a switcher, but I was excited to be a hybrid user (I have no problem maintaining a Windows PC without virus scanners, in fact viruses have always gotten more hype than they deserve), but in order to rope me in Apple had to show that they can be competitive, the simple answer to that is no. Over the last 12 months that I have been following the Apple world I realized that Apple is more into dazzling users into paying what they want us to pay for what they want us to buy. Hardly a consumer oriented company if you ask me. If Apple really cared about the users would they keep everything a secret? Sure keeping new products a secret is a great way to build momentum, but they should keep us informed of updates.

I need a laptop now, and the dell inspiron 9400 is looking mighty sweet for the price. A 7900gs, 2gigs of ram, a core 2 duo T7200 processor, 160gb harddrive and a 17" screen for $1929 cdn looks good next two the 17" mbp with a core duo processor, 1 gig of ram, 120gb hard drive and x1600 for $3099. I still want an apple but if they dont release it soon with comparable specs and prices then im giving my money to dell.

Well, I don't understand why everyone is so upset...

First off, my Dad could beat any of your Dads up.

Secondly, my 4 and 1/2 year old toshiba laptop that I have to reinstall the OS on every 6 months is "SUPERSWEET".

And finally, Windows MovieMaker only makes my computer crash 4 out of every 5 times I use it so "Boo-Yah"...

So you are probably asking the same question I am "Why do I need a new computer?"

IM OUT!

The 9400, configured similarly to how I would want a reasnable mac system to be, rates up at about 2400 dollars. This includes their best resolution and decent video card, 2gb ram and comprable warranty (please note that by default the warranty is not close to apple's).

weight? Close to 10lbs, maybe slightly more. BZZZT. 15" version is slightly less but we are talking about maybe 1lb and lower battery life than apple on either one. You can get a supplimental battery but that adds another 1.5lbs to the situation.

While apple wont get a dime from me for the 15" mbp with the current low resolution screen, the weight is also a dead stop. I'll pay a bit more for something light, because I use a laptop as a laptop.

This is one fun thread! I'm a recent switcher. Took the leap into the MacPro last month and bought the MBP last week. Couple points. As I price out comparable hardware, Dell Precision M90 for instance (which is different than any hardware), pricing on the MBP is comparable if not better.
Now the reason I switched was for OS/Software and what value that has is certainly not quantifiable in any meaningful fashion because it will be different from person to person. To me it's tremendous and even if a MBP was a grand more expensive than a comparable Dell/Gateway/HP/what-have-you, it would be worth it...to me.
And that leads me to the last point, why I decided to not wait for the upgrade. The switch to Apple has increased my productivity by several orders of magnitude, whatever small incremental value a G2 MBP may have over G1 that I have lost was regained the first day I had a MBP.

Do realize that having the upgrades in stock in physical stores in Nov. does not prevent an earlier announcement. My guess is that they will be announced next week, and that they will be available in store by the following week. Could be wrong, but hey, optimism is a good thing :)

I do not know if you could call me a switcher, as I think I will continue to use Windows XP besides OSX.

What I dislike most about Windows is the way they are tightening the grip on the user now that they have most of the market and a huge base of legacy applications and data build up.
When computing was still young, switching OS was quite easy and did not impact your life much. Now the ordinary user has thousends of documents, photos and the lot that he/she simply can not afford to loose. So they figure they have us all tied up and can dictate the rules. I do not like the way Vista is leading with Online-Office-Applications, restrictions on the number oft the installation of the OS, limited support timeframe, Online registration and cripled adminstrator rights.

Other than this I do not think that XP is such a bad OS. It has its weak points but for me it is very reliable for office work and browsing.

Moving to OSX seems to be the only open path now where one can escape the grip of Redmont and still continue to access all the build up documents and stuff.

I read, between now and Thanksgiving. The delay may be that they just
don't have the chips.

I didn't plan on being a 'switcher' either. I fully planned on running my Dell system right next to my MP. All my photo/av stuff done on the MP, everything else on the Dell, KVM switch on my 2407. Very quickly the quantity of 'everything else' is dwindling.
I had and still have no plans to put Windows on my MP.

Well i havent been on this thread for several days which is weird as i usually breathe this thread. Anyways seems these updates won't be coming out in October but rather November and at that point tthe updates better be more than a chip swap otherwise people might as well wait for MWSF or Santa Rosa even. January to November is definately a long stretch...tooo long.

If there is this much delay on merom that been out for a while, i wonder how long it'll take before the Quad Core Mac Pro updates materialize

OK for all the people who keep saying... "Well I will just buy an HP or Dell etc. etc. instead because Apple is taking sooo long"... See, the thing if is that using OS X is an awesome experience so you are missing out on that...

Probably not willing to wait that long but I won't have a problem waiting until April/May.

Let me make sure I understand: you're willing to spend what is (statistically speaking) something on the order of 2-4% of your remaining time on this planet just to save what - a hundred bucks?

Amazing!

yeah AI has been pretty reliable so far i hope they're right on this one. and i hope the "speedbump" is referring to merom.

I'm skeptical of the credibility of this report... The reference to waiting for ample numbers of Merom chips seems fishy. Other PC manufacturers are having no trouble shipping C2D systems within their normal build times and this includes Apple with the iMac. So far there has been no credible report of any sort of shortage or delay on C2D shipments from Intel. At the recent IDC, Intel stated that they are more than able to meet current and future demand for Core 2 processors.

But I think this is the time we'll start seeing a lot of predictions from the rumor sites about when the MB/MBP updates ship. Because if it's still going to happen this year, it basically has to happen within the next 4 weeks or not at all.

I think that even if there is "just a chip swap", you will not see anything at MWSF then. I think then it is going to be most likely mid-year & the Santa Rosa platform.

Yeah I am a little confused about how there are these shortages... AI makes it sounds like it'll be a mere chip swap which will be such a disapointment... I probably won't get one if it is that. I need one. I'm sitting in my dorm, no television no internet (using g/f's comp), and i just can't understand why it'd be this long just for a simple chip swap...

As you stated the iMac has been shipping fine. Does anyone know if the iMac 2.33 Ghz C2D has shipped yet?

I really didn't get the idea from the article that there was a shortage of Meroms. The way it was explained, I understood it to mean that Apple is going to release the MB and MBP at the same time and they didn't want to have to worry about having enough processors on hand to feed the MB crowd. I think they may have been making the Merom MB and MBP for a while, but just stockpiling them.

But maybe I am completely wrong.
