Keep Thinking It's Gotta Be Monday

My old PB 550 is simply dying. The screen freezes or flickers every time the laptop moves (unsteady table). I really need a new PB as soons as possible for my work and school. I'm trying to hold on as much as I can for the C2D, but if APPLE doesn't upgrade on the 25th, I'll probably buy a used laptop in the meantime (waste of money). I can't wait any longer!!!!

I just had to share this little drama...

Yeah I know what you mean. I'm going a little crazy myself.

Let's all get commited and do a class-action suit against Apple for driving us to insanity. Our demand should be Merom MBP's though, not money. :p

Sounds like mostly user error (except for the wrong CD)

Just a little fun story about his first day of C2D with Dell...
  • Try to re-install Windows XP Pro to get rid of all the stupid pre-installed software that comes on the machine.
  • After reformatting the harddrive and installing the OS...
  • Find out Dell shipped the wrong CD to reinstall the drivers.
  • Computer can't recognize the Ethernet port w/o the correct driver so can't get online to download the driver
  • Speak with off-shore customer support until 2AM that will not listen to a word you have to say
  • Finally get the computer running about 5 hours later

And why not copy the drivers to a USB thumb drive, and install them from that?

Seriously, though, for any Windows laptop you'll find that there are a number of drivers and utilities that only the manufacturer provides. Dell is in fact very good at helping you get the complete set of necessary tools.

When I want to build a completely clean Dell system (laptop or workstation), I'll
  • Find the 7 character "service tag" number on the back or bottom of the unit
  • Go to support.dell.com, go to download drivers, enter the service tag in the box, "Go"
  • Select my operating system, "Go"
  • I'm now at a page that lists all of the files for that particular model and revision
  • Download all the relevant drivers, firmware, utilities (I'd never even look at the Dell CD - it almost certainly is out-of-date)
  • Oviously, don't download the Google adware and other crap ;)
  • Copy the files to a USB drive or burn them to a CD
  • Install the vanilla XP SP2 merge (one from Microsoft, not Dell), or the Dell OEM CD (OS-only)
  • Then apply all the updates from the USB drive

No need to call support....

In hindsight the steps you described make perfect sense, however one would seem to think that when paying good money for a computer you should at least get the correct restoration cds in order to perform a reformat. I guess you should never give anyone (not just singling out Dell here) the benefit of the doubt.

It's a "Rev 0" issue as well....

Since revisions come rather quickly in the Intel world, it's not uncommon for some of the ancillary materials in the first shipments to be out-of-date.

It's not right, but it's not uncommon.

Often it's purely cosmetic (the user manual says the fastest chip is 2.16, but you just unboxed a brand-spanking new 2.33), but your friend's decision to do a wipe-and-install exposed him to one of these problems.

I assume that Dell is shipping him the correct CD now....

Why is there a need to have two labels? MB and MBP. Surely just having different specificatoins on varying sized laptops is that is needed? MBP's are not exclusively bought by Professionals and MB's are not just bought by Non-Professionals as such. Its all about what Specs suits the individual. So why the need for the differentating lables?

Just a thought is all.

I think it makes it easier to differentiate between the lines, and helps to justify the price differences. It'd be sort of weird to have a $1000 laptop and a $3000 laptop in the same line. Other manufacturers do the same, such as Dell with Inspiron and XPS, etc.

As for the naming tag being normal 'MB' and 'MB Pro', I don't know. Maybe it just sounded good. (Although I remember people not liking the naming convention at first.)

Actually, they aren't... the tech guy told him that there is no "correct CD"... yet. But told him to just burn a CD from the website and hold onto it.

I've never owned a Mac and am looking forward to a different "new computer" experience where i don't need to do extensive work before i deem it acceptable for use. I'm just wondering how long it's going to take me to adapt to OS X.

MBP BTO delayed until Oct.

My company placed an order for a BTO MBP direct from Apple. At order, the original arrival date was expected to be the 27th of September. We just got informed that it won't arrive until late October.

Soon you will have more of your laptops with:
Frodonah, Conrom, Enronfield, Kentscrest, Krustyclownertown, and Tigerwood processors.
...and yes, 2 FW800 ports that will remain useless but is sooo cooool to have them.
Remember: "if baby doesn't cry, baby won't suck!"

Woa! That looks like evidence of disappointment next Monday plus a major redesign in the works. Apple might be having a parts shortage or the redesign requires a part they are having to wait for.

On the other hand it could just be a phoney date that they intend to shorten next week. I have seen Apple tell me something won't ship for 3 weeks that ships the next day. So you can't necessarily read anything into a promised shipping date.

At this point... i just want some definitive news. I'd be happy if Apple said (on Monday) here's the new MBP... C2D, etc, etc shipping sometime in Oct... although i know that's not Apple's marketing policy. I just want some concrete info, i'm going insane!

The Macbook I ordered (with 80GB hd) is still scheduled for "tuesday" the 26th still. I hope that is a good sign of something happening on Monday or Tuesday.

Aren't ship dates unrelated to new product launches? Such long lead-times on deliveries seem to have more to do with order backlog. Presumably if Apple is getting in a whole new batch of MBPs, it would be able to fulfill new orders relatively quickly.

I'm not sure if Amazon always markets their products like this, but they are currently showing only 1 left on the 2 GHZ 15" MBP.

Hoping it's a sign they are waiting to refresh their inventory.

A guy I work with just ordered a 15" 2.0GHz from Amazon 2 days ago. I don't think it's shipped yet, but he order like 9-day shipping or something along those lines. Maybe he bought the second to last one left. :)

What's weird is that the store still lists the ship times as 24 hours or 1-3 days, depending on what you order.

The config was 2.0Ghz, 512MB RAM, 100GB 7200RPM HD, Standard (not glossy) display.

Obviously, I'm hoping they'll do a refresh and ship a C2D, but I've got no evidence to support that happening. I'm just providing another data point :)

That's not a standard configuration. That could be the reason why there is only 1 left.

Repeating from another thread: (Delivery times on Macbook Pros September 21st. "1-3" days listed as "3" etc.)

For anyone that is interested. Seeing how I actually compiled this information I think it's safe to say that I NEED a MBP to get my mind on something else soon. :)

AMD chief says Apple to use AMD chips

Here's some darned interesting news from Appleinsider...

AMD chief says Apple to use AMD chips

By AppleInsider Staff
Published: 03:00 PM EST

Advanced Micro Devices chief executive Hector Ruiz said Wednesday that Apple Computer will eventually use its microprocessors alongside those from Intel.

Ruiz made the comments during a dinner speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, according to Bloomberg.

"Everybody wants choice,'' he said, adding that rival Intel Corp's practices have stifled the PC industry's growth. "Knowing Apple, why would they want to be held hostage like everyone else has been?"

Adding AMD as a supplier would be simple for Apple because the company has already adapted its Mac OS X system software to work on Intel chips, which use the same instruction set as AMD, Ruiz said.

The Sunnyvale, California-based AMD is the world's second-largest chipmaker, behind only Intel.

The two companies have been intertwined in a fierce battle for market share with AMD recently pushing Intel's share of the market to less than 80 percent for the first time in four years.

Apple has declined to comment on the report.

Could my new MBP be an AMD MBP? Has a nice ring to it, but looks like, if true, it won't be offered for awhile.

Here's to Hector Ruiz...keep dreaming buddy!

The day AMD can give better R&D support than Intel while offering a better product road map, that may be the time but not in the foreseeable future.

To further explain this, AMD have trouble developing chip sets for their own processors, so why would they think they had a chance to help develop others?
