yup, tru dat. can't wait for this flash based memory to start getting bigger and bigger. soon, the OS will run strictly on flash memory. and then everything can run on flash memory. and THEN flash memory can take over the WORLD!

sorry, got carried away.

You and me both :)

Flash is much more resilient, uses less power, lighter, yada yada yada. Lovely!

I figure we'll soon see flash being used for the first 10-20GB -- OS and apps, say -- and the rest using current magnetic storage methods for the "volatile" stuff...

Would apple update the store to modify the 'OCTOBER' shipping date for the new shuffles to a more specific time, only to update the store again a few days later for the new MBs or MBPs??

Yes.

Simultanious Launch?

Hello everyone. Another newbie here. I've been watching these forums for over a year now. Never felt the need to join because there was always someone who would ask what I had in mind.

Anyways, I was just looking at the online Apple Store and decided to take a look at the Xserve. I see that they are still showing an "Available in October" decal on the product link. I was wondering if the holdup with the MBPs launch could be delayed for a possible simultanious launch of the two products. Does anyone see this as a possibity? I don't really need an Xserve, but am rather trying to piece together the holdup as I'm sure we all are.

Shuffle is also due in October.

It's pretty easy to add eSATA to existing systems as a result -- doesn't need to be part of the chipset.

It's pretty easy if you have available card slots, and unfortunately iMac's do not. The reason I think eSATA is tied to Santa Rosa doesn't have anything to do with technology, rather the manufacturing and design costs will be negligible since the motherboard will support it.

Steve Said Shuffle Ships "In October"

Steve said in his presentation "In October" which to my way of thinking means November for many since it is bound to be majorly back-ordered. I love the new design. Considering the 38 character free engraving, seems like the perfect stocking stuffer for only $79.

I think the ability to make each one unique thanks to free engraving adds a lot to the desirability of the new Shuffle. Plus I think the fact that it's aluminium makes it a seriously very high quality enclosure instead of cheap looking white plastic. :)

i hope this thread doesn't get as huge as the photokina update or larger because that would just mean more and more waiting.

I think you misunderstood my meaning -- I wasn't suggesting at the consumer level, bur rather at the design stage.

At the design stage it's essentially no harder to make a current systems support it than it is SR. The controllers are already there -- all that is required is the connection in the right place, and a buffer chip if the i945 controller isn't capable of the tighter voltage requirements. (I think it is, but don't quote me). Either way, it's trivial.

I think the bigger challenge is fitting in the extra routing to the port, and that's one that exists regardless of platform. Well, that and keeping some features back so the new model always has some improvements... (cynical, moi? ;) )

With Apple cases, it's not like they're using reference designs anyway... (plus in the case of the iMac, it's not even full Napa... different wifi card).

Is Apple using Intel's wireless card on the current MBPs?

Nope.

My understanding is the MBP is using an Atheros chipset and the iMac a Broadcom chipset.

Hey, first time poster long time reader.

A friend of mine working for a certain establishment 'Apple **cough**' mentioned to me that the due date for release of the new Core 2 Duo processors in the notebooks was last Monday the 25th, but it was delayed.

He also mentioned why it was delayed. It was delayed as they are updating the two portables at the same time. Both the Macbook and MBP's will be upgraded to core 2 duo at the same time and he also said that we can expect them in the next two weeks and at the very latest by the third week in October.

He doesn't know when exactly as he said he has to drag information from his supplier (his apple supplier). Apparently Apple are as careful about who they tell when the upgrades are inside the company as out.

Could be totally wrong but i believe him. Lets just hope he's right anyway.
I'm sick of waiting. Been five months now.

Prediction: Tuesday 3rd or 10th MB and MBP Core 2 Duo's.
This seems to hold some truth.... we'll see... I'd put my money on this.

PS... when i went to the aple store today, i was told, and i qoute "whether you're in desperate need of a computer or not, you should just wait until tuesday"
im not sure if this guys knows any more than any of you guys here... but its the apple store

Atheros and Broadcom are names of hardware suppliers.

Common wisdom generally considers Atheros as one of the better wifi chip makers on the market and Broadcom to be the low-end cheap jobs. Having said that, I've used Broadcom chipsets enough to consider them adequate, but Atheros seems to have better range and throughput at range compared to Broadcom.

Obviously, things vary somewhat depending on which actual chip.

Intel offer their own wifi chipsets -- they seem adequate, but not as good in general as Atheros, and I suspect they're not as cheap as Broadcom, soo...

I also suspect the reason the MBP got the Atheros chipset is down to the aluminum casing.

Edit: for clarity, it's late. :)

He probably is just speculating considering that apple is so damn secretive, but he's probably right, if not the next tuesday, or the next tuesday....or maybe the tuesday after that. It'll be worth the wait, trust me.

Awesome.
Well I'd say there's about a 50% chance for this tuesday so either yes or no.

Since I ordered an MBP yesterday this has to be true.

Probably just Tuesday's his day off and he's lazy ;)

In what city please?

PS Thanks Ergle.

I believe in Tuesday. Just not sure which one. :p Clues for October 3 look promising. But I consider myself clueless when it comes to predicting any more. :D
