Please, don't buy a Dell.

Dell laptops smell of plastic. They have flimsy keyboards, they are really (no - I mean REALLY) ugly and I hate their guts.

I got my gf a Latitude Dell about 1.5 years ago, it was the most horrible POS I ever used. I couldn't stand seeing her with it. I bought her the 12" Powerbook instead, and now she's happy. Damn solid build, actually looks pretty - and everything about it just leaves the Dell in the dust.

If these would be cars, the Dell would be some ugly ass overpowered american car - alot of horsepower and runs like a dragster straight on. The MBP ()even with C2D) would be more like a Porsche, beautiful stylish design with superb handling.

I'm a Porsche man myself.

Yes, I would have to agree. My inspiron I got in hmmmmm 2004 is slowly rotting away. It got a virus about 3 months ago because I was stupid and didn't download McAfee free from Comcast, but after I did, it was fine and protects it. I get trojans every so often, but antivirus zaps it like a bug zapper. But I still can't wait to get my Mac!!!! Also, it is pretty ugly. The buttons on the mouse bad are going, I don't have a key on the comma button, and I think my m button is next to go. Plus there is a ton of junk inbwetween the keys, since I realized the condition of my computer could get no worse, I might as well eat around it. It will not be like this with my Mac I pwomise :)

A "national US holiday" that the US Gov't. follows, but most corporate companies do not. Columbus day is hit or miss as far as observation goes.

More likely Wednesday October 11th next. Second day after a national US holiday. :)

I have an inspiron 8200 thats prob 4 years old or there abouts. Pretty ugly but it works fine and was a decent enough machine when I used to use it, admittadly now it has been relegated to a messaging and p2p machine but it sits there running ubuntu just fine. Only problem with it is the bottom right hand corner of the screen it looks as if some of the plastic within the frame has shifted so blocks a bit of the screen, that and it looks and feels plasticy. It certainly isnt the worst laptop I have ever had to use.

The Vaio that I bought to replace it is a lovely machine - amazing screen (XBlack, dual lamp, 1920x1200 17"), looks good, but weighs a fair bit, the finish is looking worn where my hand rests on it (it gets used a LOT) and the battery life is crap.

Very much looking forward to moving to the macbook pro, but am really gonna miss the vaio screen. My Dad is itching to get his hands on the Vaio (we work together, he is taking the vaio and I get the cash to buy a mbp) and am now coming under a lot of pressure to take the plunge and buy one - I have been fending him off for months now and his old vaio is slowly dying.

Well first of all it's not even part of the store. So that evidently isn't why. It's just an info page. Why do you think the store would go down if the link wasn't in the store? And also why wouldn't the US update as well because we have the same problem?

On the other hand, who thinks its time for a front page redesign with a macbook pro instead of ipods? well maybe ipods in one of the little squares.

While that page isn't a part of the store there is a link to the US version, which was still broken when I looked yesterday evening, from the main page for individual products (MB,MBP, iMac...) that's inside the store.

Not that it means anything, other than someone missed an edit somewhere.

From the main hardware page for the product that's outside of the store (like apple.com/imac), the link points to intel.html as noted by a couple other observers.

With a few stores going down last night, it doesn't necessarily mean much. Routine maintenance I'd expect. Doesn't mean it had to be a new or revised page for an update. With the size of the online application for the store, it could have been almost anything. From fixing a typo somewhere, to a revised section of the underlying code, to even a database update. Too difficult to tell.

And mostly a miss except for (as noted) the Gov't. Mail, banks, etc.

Although, being a former Federal employee and now owning my own business, I did include all the Fed holiday's in our schedule. :D

A large german internet dealer (www.thomann.de) just temporarily removed all MacBooks off his store, because Apple does not provide ship dates on MacBooks any more.

May be we will see Notebook Upgrades soon...

Just thought I'd let all you people speculating on the shipping times know the following:

On Wednesday afternoon I ordered a stock 15 inch MBP. Original delivery estimate was for next week - it was delivered today.

I just read santa rosa being described as "Low Voltage" merom. I actually think i might wait for it then. Would it greatly increase battery life, and reduce heat? I'd love intel to bring out those damn chips now! April i believe is the ship date....which probably means Apple will get them next September.:(
:D

Well, how is it? :D

I'm still getting into it! They put the label needed for the rebate right across the slit of the box, so I spent 10 minutes cutting it a hole in the box to take the label off...

Hi guys,

I don't think this is relevant. but I came across this ad and it left me wondering. I thought the first time Apple started using Intel was this year?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQa2vLa_A3Q&mode=related&search=

What does this mean?

The G3 Processor at the time....was "twice as fast" but also ran much cooler.

Basically apple was taking the pis* of the fact that intel's chips ran too hot.

Not sure how relevant, but John Lewis (big online / high street retailer; first place a lot of people go to buy expensive electrical equipment due to good customer service etc) is out of all MB and MBP lines except the 2.16 MBP and the white 2 MB. I'm gonna hang on....

EDIT to correct ridiculous spelling.

That means the chip they were using was up to twice as fast as a pentium 2 processor....

Hehe, so much for the Intel + Mac "marriage", they started off b*tching abt Intel and now they're all over Intel. But then again, that's how real life works eh?:D   ;)

Well back in those days....the G3, G4 and G5 did outperform intel processor's....but nowadays Performance per watt is what Apple is keen on and the Gseries just doesn't cut it.

It's all about Pipelines...and roadmaps according to trusty old Steve.

Macs Will Be Running A Lot Faster Plus 4MB L2 Cache

thejadedmonkey said:
Isn't that like $1000 more if you go MBP? I mean, sure it's a few mhz faster, but jeez... Apple's looking way overpriced right now!
Yes but the Mac will be going not "just a few faster". At 2.33GHz it will be going more than 145% 730MHz faster x 2 cores or 1.46GHz faster - 3.2GHz vs 4.66GHz - plus the Double Size 4MB L2 cache so I don't agree the MBP looks way overpriced. I do think we pay a premium to have the best money can buy. But then it's also a perception thing some of you would disagree with I'm sure.

I only posted that ad to show what kind of c**p the non-competition is throwing up on the wall to see if it will stick.

The 2GHz 4MB L2 cache C2D MacBook is going to be a good deal @ $1299.

Alienware is owned by Dell; they are not Dell.

I have no idea what you mean by "converted all their hardware"... Dell I'm sure provides them with much better rates on their hardware now... but Alienware has never been considered horrible. They've always been considered the "elite" laptops for gamers, even holding off VoodooPC for the title.

And I believe someone mentioned the poor battery life... well of course. When you throw a Geforce 7900 into a laptop, it's going to eat up the battery. You can get an integrated graphics Alienware laptop too if you'd like that has nice battery life... it's about choice, something that Apple lacks.

The U.S. stock market is open on Columbus Day, so I wouldn't count it as a holiday towards Apple's potential release schedule...

Just bought new laptops! Long shipping time though :(

Just bought 2 new macs! This is my very first Mac!

For my boyfriend:

13" Macbook (black)
  • 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo
  • 1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512
  • 120GB Serial ATA drive

For me: :)

15.4" Macbook Pro
  • 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo
  • 2GB 667 DDR2 - 2x1GB SO-DIMMs
  • 120GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 rpm

I just couldn't wait for some chip that may or may not be here in the next few weeks, and may or may not be dramatically faster. I just couldn't. It's time for me and my boyfriend to switch.

Yay SO EXCITED.

edit: Ordered today (10/6), estimated shipping time for the Macbook is 10/17, but for my Macbook Pro its 11/2 :(
