Surely refurb laptops come with a used case at least? I am trying to help the skeptics fire off a few question here

Considering you are someone who named his forum username off a character in a 6 year old game, yeah I am pretty sure I am much older than you

Actually it's from Demon Hunter the band.

Water-cooling, you must be kidding.

6 day delay in shipping

On the web it says "ships in 24hrs" for a Macbook. My order of a totally stock configuration placed 10/6 says "expected to ship on 10/12" LOL
Are they gonna up it to a new Mebrom chip? What's the hold up?

Well, I see someone back in Sept. posted this same sort of comment...oh well...crossin' my fingers :)

Don't count on the FLASH being any more than the NAND FLASH people have been talking about. It can be used to store key OS and other necessary files and allow for near instant boot-up.

In the form of a radiator or set of peltier coolers. Water cooling typically takes up a lot more space than air cooled designs. And don't forget the pump to circulate the coolant too, that takes up space.

I was actually thinking that they would use the radiator style cooling. I know that the NAND Flash is a while away, but not too far, I actually have heard of at least one company who uses it for a major os. And it's becoming a new (small) trend for Linux users to load the complete os on their flash drive and boot from there. The flash drives/OS size ranging from 64mb to 1+gb. So I don't think it's too far off just requires some design modification so it doesn't get worn out so quickly with the constant use.

But, if Apple releases something in the next month, I would guess there won't be any major changes in January. (i.e. when C2D laptops get released grab one--after the early adapters try them out :)

I suppose, but still from what I understand in Jan is the big show and new releases either hardware or software wise. I just wish they could make the dual layer DVD burner an option for the MB along with a better video card and hopefully the pre n wireless.

I'd sure be mad if it was a simple chip swap now and then in January and complete redesign for the Santa Rosa prepartion...

I'm with you. I guess all we can do, though, is to wait and see what happens...:(

If it is a chip swap I'd buy the refurbished models after a price reduction.

only a chip swap

I don't think it will be anything more than a chip swap. Why would apple update the macbook line now and then again for Santa Rosa? What sort of precident would this set for future chip upgrade?

My money is on a simple chip swap and an upgrade of standard/basic specs. ie 1GB RAM or 80-100 HD.

I wish they would hurry though - have been waiting 5 months now (didnt want to commit to 1st gen macbook).

btw - I saw the 24" iMac yesterday - is absolutely beautiful - very difficult to resist.

My refurb has just been bumped to "out for delivery" status suggesting its at my local UPS warehouse and would be here first thing monday. Im really surprised it took Apple only 24 hrs to get the package to my area.....thats pretty cool.

I just hope the MBP doesnt have any issues. If i sense even the slightest sign of problems, i'd send it back and get a Mac Pro...i've made up my mind. Here's hoping.

It should be fine. Anything coming out from them now has the previous issues resolved. After all, it wouldn't make any sense to send something out that could potentially be returned for a previously known issue that's been resolved.

MB Will Only Be C2D Change But MBP Will Include Re-Design

Since you are new here bubba, you have to understand there are two different lines being discussed. We all agree the MacBook will only get the C2D change while most of us also think the MBP is due a re-design as well. Poppe was referring to the MBP not the MacBook.

Hey, so I noticed that the Blackbook's expected shipping for educational institution purchases is 2 days longer than the white ones. It got me thinking- what do you guys think of the possibility of a more substantial upgrade for the Blackbook? Apple's been getting away with charging what is essentially $150 for a stupid color difference. Perhaps they will make the Blackbook more of an actual replacement for the 12" Powerbook and give it a low-end dedicated video card but leave the other specs essentially the same as the other white macbook's (save maybe for more stock RAM and a bigger hard drive). Or maybe they'll give it some more ports, too. This seems more likely now seeing as how they have a low end imac with integrated graphics. Perhaps they will not stop there with different video options over a product line.
I'd buy one of those. But if that doesn't happen, I'd be more than happy with the Macbook's the way they are now (I'm buying one soon). I'm sure as heck not going to pay $150 for black over white.

Enhanced Black MacBook Unlikely

Not likely. Apple's got no incentive to change a winner. They can't make 'em fast enough to keep up with sales. We're lucky they've gotta put C2Ds in there just to avoid a riot.

Well see my thought was that if intel already had knew exactly how santa rosa was going to be then Apple could have made the redesign so that the Merom MBP would need no change. HAHA

thats like thinking that the MBP was gonna have a 512 video card... Sometimes I kill myself i'm so funny

I keep checking this thread in desperation... hoping that a new theory will come about, or that there will be some sort of uplifting news.

I was reading a little info brochure for the PowerBook line earlier, and I just wanted to say that I think it is sad that the base hard drive config for the MacBook Pro is 80 gb.... just like the PowerBooks used over a year ago!

Listen, or rather read, up Steve! I would like to see an increase in the size of the bottom-specced hard drive revision of the MacBook Pro. I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

Please give back the features that were once standard on the PowerBooks to the new revision of the MacBook Pro! Also, I would rather have a thicker formfactor (like that of the PowerBook,) even if it means that I don't get to have my own personal leg warmer...

Sigh.

Patience Is Virtue

Couldn't wait any longer for a merom mbp. Finally decided to sell my Titanium G4 and bought an iMac 24" on Wednesday. Should be a nice upgrade. Planning on selling the iMac whenever Apple pulls the trigger on the new mbp merom. Which will hopefully be before Christmas..
Anyways, Has anyone heard anything about running Windows XP on the new C2D chips? Will they run boot camp just like the Core duo? I will be using CS2 quite a bit and I've heard it runs substantially faster in windows, since it is not universal yet.. Thanks

Erm.. of course. Is there any reason why C2D based Intel Macs won't run boot camp?

Why does everyone think it will be a new design? Seriously. Steve already said it's perfect. The Mac Pro didn't change... even Dashboard has the feel of anodized aluminum.

Thinner? No. New size? No. New material? No.

I see only three possibilities: magnetic latches, swappable drives, and integrated keyboard. But the keyboard is already perfect. So that leaves two minor design changes.

The Mac Pro did change.. new memory slot design, new optical drive slot. If that isn't a change what is it?

People aren't asking for much, like the changes you named, they are changes that are for the better

Thats exactly what we are taling about a redesign... That would be a redesign or at least a refresh which again to most people on here is meaning the same thing.

Anyways speaking of a new design what else would everyone else want to be changed? Besides FW 800 and DL on 15"/ Swappable drives/Magnetic Latch/GPU increase.

I was thinking maybe improved speakers? Though that might be pretty hard on somehting less than an 1"...
Does anyone on Laptops ever miss the Number pad like I do... Man oh man do I... Probably be a waste of space but I sure like using that number pad for all my numbers... Oh and my number one thing would be a Gun metal (dark dark grey) finish would be so sweet... but I have been saying that for awhile...

So anyways anything else you wish?

Easy Access HD Bay Requires Re-Design By Definition

We're not talking about the outside, although I think black anodized aluminum outside is a possibility. We are referring to the inside. If an easy access HD bay is added, the entire inside must be redesigned. If better ventilation needs to be created to get rid of Rev A overheating problems, the entire inside must be redesigned. You think not?

And what's wrong with a Wide UXGA resolution option on the 17"? Everyone else offers it except Apple. That's 1920 x 1200 BTW.

All of these reasonable changes are a re-design. How can you think otherwise?
