I’m sure we’ve all experienced being in a room with 3 or 4 others and everyone’s on their phones not talking…
I haven't.
But then again I'm quite a few years older than most people here.

When we oldies get together we sit around and talk.
The sad sods glued to their phones while in the company of others are immature.

The sad sods glued to their phones while in the company of others are immature.

I see it at dinner, at restaurants, and it makes me profoundly sad

I routinely see, for example, a family of 4 and both parents are on their phones and both kids are on their own iPads.

This can't possibly a good "future".

This isn't how humans were meant to be and interact.
It's literally not healthy.

Things move on and change, some things for the better and others not so much. Should we all still be a sending our kids up chimneys to sweep them just because that’s what they used to do in the good old days?

I think people who are focused on how they can now litter their environments with big windows are probably just very disorganized in general. Productivity isn't hard. It just takes focus, but these days everyone is more interested in productivity hacks and technological interventions than just buckling down and getting work done. Huge windows everywhere is just going to create more chaos and ADD behavior.

I see no advantage whatsoever to strapping goggles onto my face...just to use a word processor or answer an email or whatever. That doesn't mean I see no use cases for AVP (or AR/VR in general). What amazes me, however, is Apple's lack of vision for his new computing paradigm. I expected them to blow us away with some sort of 3D file management, being able to reach inside documents and manipulate objects, etc., but so far everything seems rather predictable - and mostly two-dimensional. The few native AVP apps just look like iPad apps with some interface tweaks. I find all of it quite boring.

I manage a very busy restaurant and we have tables like this almost every night. Sometimes it's very large parties. We get a lot of Bay Area tourists where I live and we frequently have tables with 6+ people from the Bay, all of them on their phones the entire meal, and no one talks. It's demented.

Agree 100%

I really expected Apple to have at least one single totally "wow, that's incredible" specific usage with this product.

An external monitor for your face (high resolution or not) isn't not even remotely revolutionary...nor is waving your arms around and "pinching to click".

That’s what they have developers for, but for them to be able to get excited about creating these types of apps then you need to give them the best possible hardware and the prospect of multiple product iterations over a number of years. Give it time, the real exciting possibilities will come from the developers, not Apple.

Maybe they should also give developers the Dev strap they are instead charging them $300 for?

Apple DESPERATELY needs developers building like crazy .. and yet they choose to gouge them.

While I get that sentiment, I don't entirely share it. I think Apple's inability to deliver a WOW use case for launch demonstrates a profound lack of vision overall. So far all of the third party apps I've seen (screenshots, I still haven't tried AVP) are very unimpressive. Maybe a developer will come along and fully realize the potential of this device...or maybe it's just not a very exciting product? I'm certainly not going to shell out $3500+ just to litter my environment with big iPad windows. I really think Apple could and should have done better with the software side of this release.

So it's more exciting to live your life inside a $4000 head computer with a crappier FOV than a $300 head computer? You sound literally and figuratively, narrow minded.
Why do I have to ‘live inside’ this device. Calm down mate, allow the put downs as it’s making you sound like a bit of a di*k. It’s a device that you choose to use or not use. Do you live inside your car or live inside your phone or live inside anything you purchase? If you can’t see the possibilities of this tech then it’s you that’s narrow minded, luckily we have more visionary people in this world that can see past their own use cases.

I think they are going to have a hard time getting developers to spend much time on this thing with such a tiny install base.

Dev time is money and they tend to focus on doing work that has a return.

Are you surprised? Apple gouges customers and developers alike with reckless abandon. It's practically in their DNA at this point.

Yep!

Not surprised a bit -- mainly just saddened by it.

They can't seem to do a single thing anymore that isn't fully guided by financial concerns.
I think it's actually getting in the way of progress for them at this point.

Apple feels like a late stage company that is in the "squeeze juice from the existing lemon" phase of things.

You’re not the intended audience for the first release of this product. I’m not either. We may well be for AVP 3 or 4 but to get there we need to get through, improve on, develop and create use cases for this tech. Did we feel AI would be useful 10yrs ago? Probably not but look where we are now. Maybe we haven’t yet seen the full potential of this device yet but Apple’s the only company that can deliver.

That's because the CEO is not a guy focused on innovation but on making as much profit as possible (which is usually what you want from a CEO, we were just used to Apple being a bit different in that sense).

I don’t spend money on things based on imaginary possibilities that don’t exist.
You never have? So you don’t have any electronics drawer with all good intentions but didn’t use it in the end? Unfortunately I have had quite a few duds over the years

100% agree! I still think they make great products and I love how well all of their products work together, but there doesn't seem to be much vision in Cupertino these days. They are clearly just squeezing existing customers with basic upgrades each year. It almost feels like they have a list of technologies to incorporate into existing products and each year they pick one or two from the list in order to keep the upgrade gravy train moving.

The Mac was groundbreaking. The iPod was groundbreaking. The iPhone was groundbreaking. Vision Pro is just a "me too" headset with a higher level of fit and finish than other products (and a price tag to match).

I totally agree. The AVP is in a category all of it's own. For me, it's all about capturing those special moments with the iPhone 15 Pro (or AVP for the adventerous) and replaying them as if you are right there in the scene. It's about placing those kitchen timers above the simmering dishes. It's about improving one's stenciling skills through overlays. It's incredible. And of course, it's an amazing movie theater. It's not a gaming device, or metaworld-device. I wouldn't even call it a computer. It's more than that. It's the future.
PLEASE do yourself a favor and do some research on XReal. The fact you think heavy goggles being worn during cooking simply to have a timer (which you can ALSO do on your phone) shows your ignorance to understand what the “future” truly is. What I commonly see is the people who spent their money on an AVP trying to convince themselves (And others) as to why it is superior to other devices available.

How’s the field of view? I work from home and find myself quite bored and uninterested in my work environment being that I live in Wisconsin and am more or less stuck inside for half the year unless I want to bundle up with multiple layers and it’s still cold as heck.

My thought was using it for the environments so I can work in a nice warm setting and maybe trick my brain lol. I read the FOV is low to average, but how well does your brain get tricked into feeling like you’re there?? Thanks!
The FOV is less than a Quest 3.

I don't know that I'm not the intended audience. Who is the intended audience? Developers who have no one to sell apps to? People who want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a personal movie screen? Early adopter fans who have nothing better to do with $3500?

Apple is marketing AVP as the next generation of computing, which means they view all of us as potential customers. I find it funny that you think third party developers should be responsible for delivering those compelling use cases versus the company that actually created the product. Shouldn't the creator define the vision? Shouldn't the creator show us what's possible?

It's almost become like political discourse -- it's nuts the lengths people are going to find something, anything, as a reason for the AVP to even exist.
