This is Trump logic - everything is a zero sum game with a fixed pie and there can only be winners and losers. It's not Apple's fault that some high school educated white person in Ohio no longer has a factory job. It's not Apple's responsibility to make sure they do.
Oh my goodness stop it with the racist remarks already. This is the second one I've seen where you speak in a derogatory way about "uneducated white men" and now this. I'm surprised at you. If I were the type to be offended by words like some naive person who needs a safe place, then I would be offended because my white male high school educated nephew would indeed benefit from a job like this if there were any to be had in our area. Not everyone is cut out to be a doctor or a clerical worker or a poet or a priest. I'm proud of my nephew regardless. He's come through a lot in life given some setbacks he was born with.

This isn't about race or gender anyway. I'm a half Asian half white woman and even I expressed interest in a job making iPhones. And as I said in a earlier post, I remember a time when factory jobs offered women a great opportunity to work outside of the home and bring some income in. Former homemakers like my great aunt could get back into the workforce with modest initial training and work their way up with increasingly advanced training. That old paradigm may be gone but there are still many households with an unemployed adult needing direction and opportunity back into the work force.

These jobs could be an incredible boon to people of all kinds from all walks of life and backgrounds. I have a Business Degree from the University of MD and even with that degree the circumstances of my life are such that a part time factory shift making my favorite gadget would be welcome. I don't know how long I could endure at it with some health problems I've developed but I could work long enough to add to the nest egg my husband and I have built.

Look, I remember your NeverTrump hashtag. I despise the guy myself and hate it that anti minority racist and mysogynistic rhetoric has made a comeback in the wake of his campaign. But he actually didn't start it. It's been brewing under the surface for years. As a past victim of hate crimes myself I made it my business to monitor hate sites and saw this coming. He did bring it to a head and gave it a voice. I despise him for that. It makes my life infinitely more complicated and ugly. So I get where you are coming from. I sincerely do.

Just don't meet racism with another brand of bigotry please. And open your mind to at least contemplating making lemonade out of lemons for the longsuffering unemployed and underemployed people of this country. China can and will take care of its own. I don't think their government agonizes over our unemployed who have turned to drugs and despair.

Would love to see this because the quality control today SUCKS. Not saying Americans would be any better but something's gotta change.

Sent from my expensive iPhone 7 with yellow tinge screen defect

I think in the long term if we don't want humanity to starve, we will have to pass legislation that strictly regulates the use of automation. Because with the developments in AI, automation is already replacing even skilled workers. Automation could conceivably replace most of our jobs eventually if left unchecked. A hard thought out and fought for balance is going to have to be struck, and sooner rather than later.
I get what you are saying, but a monetary based society will always have the issue with the distribution of wealth.

Until we find a better, this will always be an issue.

Btw...I am not talking about socalism or any ism that already exist. They all still have problems with distribution of wealth.

You don't seriously think Apple would ever produce ALL iPhones in the US?
If forced, they may produce the ones they sell in the US, but not all.

More like between $30 and $100 difference depending on how you calculate it.

I would gladly pay the difference if it would help some folks get jobs.
Current working conditions at Foxconn will never be permitted legally or tolerated in USA. Americans will never stand to work like that. Also most raw materials locally sourced in Asia so add'l cost to procure and transport. Robots possible but I think Apple would jack up price too far to be affordable. Even if affordable, iPhone is losing its magic quickly. What's next?

Anyone remember that robot Apple built that carefully deconstructs the iPhone and sorts all components to be recycled? Well what happens when they set that robot in reverse?

This.

Unfortunately, US citizens have become increasingly less likely to choose vocational professions, instead opting for college “educations.” Good luck turning that ship around, Mr. Trump. I certainly wish him well and applaud the efforts, but I believe it’s about more than just price.

I think you forgot about the people who still think a high school diploma is all they need. It's either McDonalds, or living in a dorm making iPhones.

That is because of our educational system. It is time to start thinking differently; perhaps adopting an education model similar to that in some European countries--differentiate the education for students based on aptitude with different tracks for vocational, business, and higher educational degrees.

I would love this. However, it’s not our current reality. People don’t want to get their hands dirty. People think that everyone needs a college education. It’s all ********e. I belive Mike Rowe does an excellent job of promoting blue collar jobs and the education required to obtain those.

"I mean, you can take every tool and die maker in the United States and probably put them in a room that we're currently sitting in."

This statement right here tells me this guy is so full of crap and it's nothing but a money decision.

I have one word for you: robotics
Uh, you do realize that robotics are already heavily used in manufacturing in China. The manufacturing plants there are state of the art and manned by skilled trades people. Trumps magic wand and fantasies are not going to transport that to the US in a day (or year).

What will happen is it will be robotics doing the actual assembly, and due to a lack of STEM graduates the jobs maintaining them will have to be filled by immigrants, which isn't a bad thing, but won't help the economy as much as people think. The main question that I'd have is which is better for the environment shipping assembled phones from China or shipping the parts from asia to the US for assembly, I would think it would be the finished phones, but I don't know.

I use self checkout at the grocery store. Should that be banned?
Not banned. There is still an intrinsic balance. People repair and maintain those machines and I lose track of how many times a human cashier has to intervene and help a customer undo an error that won't clear.

We need to figure out how to identify when the intrinsic balance will be disrupted and plan for it. A lot of people from futurists to businessmen like my husband are putting a lot of thought into this already.

I'd love to see 'mericans tightly packed into dorms.

Say whatever you want about Trump, but if this goes through, that would be huge. Potentially tons of new jobs for one of the largest tech companies available to people in this country?

Exactly right. If Apple and other companies are convinced to bring jobs to people in our country that are hurting, it's an overwhelming positive.

Producing company will pay taxes in the US.
People will need to oversee robotics.
People will need to work in the buildings.
People will need to plan and implement.
People will need to deliver from the US to the rest of the world and pay taxes/fees/salaries accordingly.

Of course you ain't going to have a XIX century manufacturing chain, or not even a replica of Foxconn in China.
You are talking about APPLE. They do not pay their taxes. They are a little bit like Trump Taxes are for other people to pay.
