Pretty sure that word hasn't been used since Steve Jobs showed off multi-touch on the original iPhone in 2007.

Pretty sure you missed the point. That as soon as an Apple product comes out, all the rumors of what will be in the next one start popping up. As if to say - you don't like this one? Just wait until you see what's coming next...

Brighter? I turn down the brightness halfway, I can't imagine anyone working at full brightness... Apple should make the new laptops more useful not brighter, like keep the popular ports so I don't have to buy silly dongles to use my equipment. First they got rid off the headphone jack on the new iphone, which blows and it's annoying... now they're removing useful ports...

It's the upside of all the doom and gloom this week... Apple's great at leaking to try and break a negative news cycle!

MRW Apple rolls out the worst updates & then floods the market with rumors about how awesome the NEXT updates will be

Maybe a less power hungry OLED display will mean Apple can update the RAM to 32GB since Shiller said they had to limit the RAM to 16GB to conserve battery life.

Great, when they upgrade to OLED displays they can jack the price another $500.

This.

It's obvious Apple is surprised at the negative feedback, and is trying to change the news cycle, by spreading rumors about next year's macs.

Can't wait for a laptop with an OLED screen, I bought the first model year when Apple switched its MacBook Pro to LED LCD screens. Figure that's about a good time to upgrade again when it goes OLED ;) Looking like it will be about 8-9 years after I bought my first MacBook Pro with that LED Screen.

Don't forget the disadvantages to OLED - namely whilst black is black, it can be too jarring and create too much "edge" for want of a better word around on pixels. There are also issues that whilst black is black so are the next 20 minor shades of black above which an LCD would display properly - so you tend to get images which look like the contrast is far too high.

Brightness, image burn and lifetime of display are all issues too though they've largely been improving drastically each year as the TV technology improves - that jarring black issue is my biggest problem on both phones and OLED TV's though - to my eye its unpleasant.
Let's me guess,, until Apple who have no amoled experience DO IT RIGHT !! Because Samsung, the world's premier amoled OEM don't really know what they are doing eh? Have I missed owt?

Rather see this news pertain to the iPhone specifically, but I assume that this is also forthcoming in next year's 8?

OLED finally down in price?

Sheesh, even e-IPS (which is better than TN) has been around and affordably for a number of years but the non-retina line still uses TN. And for being associated with design industry, the MBP always using a low-end TN panel prior to Retina was a sheer joke.

Looks like Timmy and Jony will be going head to head on this one:

Jony: "OLED's are thinner and lighter! Mix it with Aluminium, and we will get a 20% reduction in volume from the last one. This is what everyone wants: unapologetically thinner and lighter devices."

Timmy: "But OLED's are more expensive! I can't sacrifice my fat margins, or the board will fire me. Craig and Phil, draw up some new emojis and put in last year's CPU's so we can maintain fat margins please."

slimmer and thinner...
no thank you.
Thin enough. More battery. More Power. More Ram. More accurate color-displays.

But NO, NOT thinner and lighter please.
And NO more HIPSTER-emoji-bar.

Well that's your preference. Mine is the opposite.

YES - The thinner the better for laptops
YES - touch bar bc I know it's more than an emoji bar.

The latest pro has a great display. What are you complaining about?

Not until 2018 at the earliest IMO. They just developed the new wide-gamut displays, they're going to get at least a few years out of those first.

Not like it's a big deal anyways, the new display is fantastic.

Completely agree with you and happy to see an objective opinion based on facts posted here. However, given that the technology is improving, as you acknowledged, I am hopeful that by the time Apple adopts OLED those problems will have been resolved. Despite the current wave of cynicism this is how Apple has performed in the past.
