I can see it on both devices actually... if I try hard enough. :)
P.S. Mine is a week 27 phone too and I can barely see the sensor only under a certain angle in bright daylight. No issues with mine.

Yeah I deserve the flames..

Someone whose proximity sensor isn't visible rescue me here. Take a photo in direct sunlight of a phone without visible proximity sensor and maybe this thread won't be a complete waste.

Visible proximity sensor...that was a joke...like when we send new Scouts out into the woods to go hunting for animals that don't exist...

Just wanna make you look stupid.

Sorry, I think this thread is past the point of saving. Good luck with your new replacement though.

This thread is a psychologist's wet dream for a thesis on the placebo effect.

The photo doesn't tell anything.

Put the phones side by side, on a flat surface, reflecting the same background, and we'll see.

One phone is reflecting shadow, the other phone is not.

Yeah, sorry, not a professional photographer. I tried on a flat table under indoor light, but I either had terrible glare or reflection, or the light source was slightly closer to one phone than the other and made them look artificially different.

All in all a total fail.

Well, almost total. I sort of corroborated what Giz was saying, now if someone could throw me a frickin' bone and post a picture of an early production phone with the same visible prox sensor, we will have proven Giz wrong.

OR, if someone has an older production phone without a visible prox sensor, we will have proven them right.

C'mon, we can still salvage this thread! *desperate laugh*

LOL, funny because that's exactly how I talk. ;)

Seriously though, check out the crazy example of that vertical jaggy-line manufacturing defect on the screen of the phone on the left. That's the one I was getting replaced for a different reason. Didn't even notice this weird effect until now.

Yeah I agree, Props for going down with the ship..... I'll toss one for you: What are those horizontal lines on the phone on the left? at first I thought it was part of the reflection, but it looks like they're infront of the refection by where your hand is..

Dang, I was going to change the thread's title to "I'm an impulsive idiot - Gizmodo will you hire me?" but apparently you can't edit a thread's title.

Mods feel free to close this and pass me the dunce cap. /sigh

Thanks, yeah I just noticed that too. Thankfully it's on the phone I was getting replaced. Actually replacing it due to dust/scratch under front bezel, didn't even notice this until now under direct sunlight.

Happy I didn't just notice that effect on my brand-new replacement.

Its on all iPhone displays back to the original, I'm pretty sure it works into the touch sensors (but I'm not sure), but I do know that it isn't anything different.

still look the same and both phones still reflecting background

Don't shoot straight down.

Put a piece of board / paper / wall 90 degree angle to the phone so it'll reflect the board.

You can, click "go advanced" after you're in the edit...

At least the OP stuck to his word and actually posted quality images and realized his mistake.

Nothing wrong in that. I'd say that's more of a man than most of the "f u posts" in this thread.
