I would check Santa Monica, CA, Palo Alto, CA and Irvine, CA since they are often the first to get and display new products.

Palo Alto has 1.6s in the back in boxes.

They're working after closing today to setup the new display.

Add the processor $300, sure.

Apple's offering a $3274 dual 1.25 with 2GB of RAM, SuperDrive, etc. In other words, loaded for that price he's talking about.

A friend of mine near the Sacramento assembly line/plant reports that (what he saw) 14 FedEx trucks departed from there this morning (an average day sees about 8 trucks - 4 morning 4 afternoon trucks), and another 7 trucks in the afternoon.

Why Order A G5 With The Analog Modem

Is it only though Apple that you can get rid of features ?
I have seen it with some resellers, but not as much as Apple is doing it.
I really don't want a modem, it's only $30 you save, but still.
I think there are two excellent reasons to keep the modem.

1. Backup dial-up access to internet in the event of broadband going down which it does from time to time.

2. FAX built into Panther will be a good reason to need that modem from time to time.

It is $30 well worth spending as insurance that you will be glad you did when either of these needs arise - and I am sure they will.

I can add 1 GB RAM and a SuperDrive for $200. It is insane to load a Mac up at Apple's crazy add on prices. And mine has a Combo drive in the second bay.

I pointedly asked her about tomorrow or wednesday and she said NO. End of the week.

The fax feature might be ok, but I really don't need a back up modem ( knock on wood ). I have had cable modem for years and it has never been down for more than a day at the most.

Last week when I was dusting it out I noticed It has the modem module in the back (screwed into a different position to hide the jack) and the cable going nowhere. If someone can show me a layout of this motherboard (like, where the modem connector lives because I can't seem to find it) I might have a free modem.

Actually there is a card that you have to plug into the mother board, it's about the size of a credit card. The Modem jack runs to the Motherboard, which in turns routes it to that Modem Card. If you're modem port was covered, that just indicates that you don't have the modem card installed. They do that to make installing the modem easier, and not take a PCI slot. As well, they hide the modem jack so if you don't have a card you won't think you will, but leave the port on, cause you can always buy the modem card later to add it if you like.

No, it just looks that way! I was fooled at first, too, but if you look closely at the box, you see that the transparent window is the edge of the G5! Weird... It really does look like a window on the box

But doesn't the Sony DVD writers all have 24x CD-R capability? Pioneers have 16x. The specs on Apple's website say 16x, which would indicated a Pioneer drive (plus Apple has used Pioneer's in the past). But, just get the combo drive and you can put whatever you want in.

Under OS 10.2.6, only the Pioneer A05/105 is supported natively. I think A06/106 and the Sony burners require the user to modify a file. I sure hope 10.2.7 and Panther support the Sony drives, cuz with faster CD-R speed, that is what I would like to put in. But only if supported by Apple. Otherwise I'll just save a few bucks and put in a Pioneer 105.

Yeah, I know. The specs don't match any Sony drives either. But the specs match the Pioneer 106 exactly.

Well, some of the existing iMacs use this drive, but I don't see why it should be in the G5 as well?

Oh well, I guess we'll find out soon enough. I'm just sort of hoping beyond hope that +R is quietly enabled. :(

No. Choose the basic, single 1.25 and "customize" it. The dual processor adds only $300 to the price, making is $1599.

I don't think...

That Apple is really shipping them. They just saying that they are "now shipping." Or else someone out there would have received an email from Apple saying,

"Your order has been processed and will be shipping today. Expected delivery is tomorrow AM."

My doubts have been cast. (we have two 1.6 on order and the order is still open) Anyone out there that can tell/show me otherwise?

when was your original order date, and what was your estimated date of devilery? apple WILL meet that date, i'm sure there are thousands before you on the list. just be patient, we're waited two months, a few more weeks won't KILL us.

Yes expect a week or two before people really start getting them in numbers.

In the UK the main distribution channel has nothing showing yet. (well there is that sept 9th guaranteed delivery date)
No stock coming in yet, also nothing from our dealer store orders yet.

I screwed myself

I called 1-800-apple today to modify my dual-2.0 order. I decided that I will transfer the AE card from my current machine and save myself a couple bucks. I call up and make the change. I check the website a while later and my ship date slipped from 8/29 to 10/30! Two months! They cancelled the existing order and replaced it with a new one. On top of that, they also changed my graphics chip from the 9800 to the 9600, so I'll have to deal with that too! I should have just left it the way it was.

Let this be a lesson to the rest of you...

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. :( Yeah, this kind of thing is quite unfair. Give them a call again, when you tell them they screwed up the 9800, maybe you can get them to repent and put you back in your rightful place in the list.

Our original order date was that day (or the day after, I can't remember.) I know that it will ship by the date indicated on the order, but my point is, someone out there had to be the first, (other than a reseller that is) and as such should have got a confirmation email. That is all that I saying. :)

The stores all ways get the first shipments, then the rest of us.

So has anybody received theirs yet? I'd love to see some pics and an early review of the sucker. If there are any, can someone point me in their direction?

I've been lusting after a fully loaded Dual 2.0 GHz from the day they were introduced. Gimme gimme gimme!

I'm sorry to hear about your problem Foxer. You should make a phone call to customer service. Hopefully they will rectify the situation and restore your 8/29 ship date. Good luck!

Foxor

I hate abusing systems, but if I could give you a hint *wink* it actually *is* true, if you contact Customer Relations, and throw a big enough temper tantrum, they will pretty much give you what you want. Dunno if it would work here, but it might.

I never thought I'd be saying something like this, because it always used to *irk* me when a cr agent would go over my head and replace something without a good solid technical cause. *heh*

NO G5s FOR A MONTH OR MORE

I called Apple today, asked why if I order online, it says "4-6 weeks". She said, and I quote:

"'Now Shipping' means we're shipping to those who pre-ordered systems. You won't be able to get a system upon placing an order until late September."

unquote. Sure, stores will get one, maybe two, for display--but forget picking one up for awhile.

They must be sitting on them.

I was walking up Kipling toward University (on my way to University and Bryant) and there were 2 apple store employees carting a stack of at least 5 of the now familiar black boxes into the store. What would you do if you saw the G5 boxes in person? Run to them. One of the employees told me they were all 1.6s and they were to setup the display after hours that evening. That's it. :)
