Comparable Dell?

I went to the dell site and tried to configure a dual Xenon 3.0ghz that is somewhat comparable to a base G5 2x2ghz for $3000.

I was somewhat stingy. You may note Dell charges $50 for the analog modem Apple charges $30 for.

I do not claim to be a configuration expert or anything but it looks to me as if there is a price discrepency alright. Well in Apple's favor.

Apparently (based upon another news report) right now the Apple Stores are just receiving the G5 tee shirts, not the G5 computers (no joke). However, the actual G5 systems are supposed to arrive at the stores fairly soon (should be before the end of the week). So it's possible that the G5 boxes that people are reporting may only contain shirts, not G5 Power Macs. As yet, and as far as I can tell there have been no actual G5 deliveries. It may be that the "now shipping" announcement only means that the systems have starting leaving the factories in Taiwan. Thus, it may take several days for the air shipment from Taiwan, clearance through customs, and the final ground distribution to the sales channels.

Anyone who ordered direct from apple should have them by end of this week/beginning of next. I think it took about 5 days from the time it left Taiwan to get my powerbook. No guarantees I guess, but someone's gonna get one real soon. Probably someone in the Alaska/Washington area, but oddly enough it goes to Indiana after that if I remember correctly. It's gonna be whoever lives closest to one of those FedEx distribution centers.

Taiwan????

PowerMacs are not built in Taiwan, and as far as I know they never have been. They are built in Ireland and Sacremento.

You may be correct, however, all of the reports have indicated that the motherboards are manufactured in Taiwan so I guess I assumed that they would be assembled there also. However, now that I consider it, since the vast majority of all motherboards are manufactured in Taiwan I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that the final assembly has to happen there also.

If they are being manufactured in Sacramento then they should start arriving today (at the latest). If only in Ireland then the same caveats on delivery apply.

IMO, anyone who ordered one of the dual 2.0 GHz G5s has about zero chance of seeing their system __before__ the end of August. I know, Apple is saying 8/29, but I suspect that those systems won't actually arrive until well into the first week of September (at the earliest).

True, one or two more weeks of waiting really isn't too bad, but I suspect that many of us are anxious to see how these systems really measure up in the real world. When they do arrive the G5 Power Macs will arguably be the most advanced PCs on the market.

However, I don't think they will offer performance that will set them that far apart from current top-of-the-line Pentium 4 PCs. Thus, the dual 2.0GHz G5 will be much faster in a couple of select cases, similar to P4s in most cases, and slower in a few other tasks. Overall, I suspect that they will be P4-comparable but not really world-beaters in raw performance. Whether their elegance and overall superb internal design will "win out" will depend upon how well they have actually been implemented (i.e. let's hope that there are no obvious flaws in the hardware design and that they more-or-less work as advertised).

Yes I agree. Price-wise I think we are still a bit behind, but performance-wise it looks like we are honestly on par with Wintel. A refreshing change.

I just called Apple regarding my order. Basically what the guy told me was that the Duals won't start shipping until the 29th (next Friday). He said that there's a good chance that even though my order is slated for September that it would go out on the 29th, but not to hold my breath. But anyway, no duals will be shipping until the 29th according to him.

Can you provide a source for this information? Like I said, I've read several reports on the various rumor sites that indicate that the G5 motherboards are being manufactured in Taiwan. And these were not based upon user reports, the sites were actually posting "news" that the G5 motherboards were being manufactured in Taiwan. But, of course, this "news" could have been incorrect.

We know that the G5 processor is manufactured at IBM's East FishKill facility (and possibly at other U.S. sites), and at the WWDC Steve Jobs even made a point of saying that the processor was made in the USA. However, as far as I know Apple has never publicly stated where the motherboard is being built.

USC apple retailer

I was at the apple store retailer at USC earlier today, and not only did they have a G5 on display, but they had already sold a couple of 1.6Ghz that they had got. They also said they are getting some 1.8's on sept. 2, but i think thats only like 2 or 3 boxes....One of which has already been reserved....by me.....

I posted in prior messages that I felt Santa Monica, CA would be among the first. USC is very near SM, CA.

I also posted in a prior message that initially they would be selign a short stack of 1.6 Ghx bozes.

So far so good.

If only I felt like predicting that a G5 Powerbook was on the immediate horizon :)

All I know is that when I ordered my TiBook last November, the FedEx shipment originated in Taiwan, and wound up at my house. I was able to follow its progress on the FedEx website.

The portables are built in Taiwan and shipped over. The Power Macs and iMacs are assembled in Sacramento or Ireland respectively.

LA Homies represent

Just called the Glendale Galleria Apple store, they have a G5 in the window to look at and are setting up a demo model as I type. I'm going to the mall!

Ahh finally apple.com.au has swapped to the now shipping graphic plus we got the Ad for the g5 blowing out the side of the house during the Sunday night movies.

I might trot down to the local store after work tomorrow and see if they have them.
