Better than the Apple approach like with bent iPad Pros claiming it's within tolerance.

Speaking of the iPad Pro bend. I say we because my wife and I both have done this in the past. We slipped the new iPad Pro 12.9” between our couch and end table. Well we didn’t realize the corner slipped under the couch and when we raised the footrest the couch dipped down. It must have had a 20 degree bend in it.

The screen was intact and functional with the bend. As crazy as I am I tried to bend it back straight. Amazingly it worked. Slight fold on the rear side of the edge but it’s still works as if nothing happened.

That’s a pretty darn tough Samsung screen.

Tech tends to fault. No one's safe.
But that fold thing is as awkward, weird, pointless, and wtf as it can get.

People either tend to be more forgiving when it comes to Samsung, or Samsung failures can never get as much attraction as the Apple ones do. I mean just look at all the clickbait video titles on YouTube where they make sure the title is as bad as possible towards Apple to get their clicks.
I agree. The biggest way to get user engagement is anger. Apple is easy to hate since they set themselves up as being more than a tech company. The solution is to not watch those videos but that’s not happening.

“...device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience.”

Best possible user experience? As in, a $2000 device that lasts more than one week before utterly falling apart?

Understatement of the year.

Got to give props when it’s due: it’s good that Samsung is taking extra measures here to ensure that the Fold screens aren’t defective.

That said, the amount of quarterbacking I’ve heard from some popular YT reviewers regarding the center crease has bordered on ridiculous. For a $2000 device, the screen should not have obvious unevenness. I don’t want to hear “it’s fine” because it’s new and bold.

New and bold, sure. Fine? No.

How cheap does a device have to be for imperfections to count? Does Apple get let off with bright spots on their iPad screens?

A crease in a folding phone is more necessary than a notch is on a non-folding phone.

I agree. It makes me wonder what degree of stress testing Samsung did on this design. What would a new screen cost? Probably 80% of that $1900 tag is screen cost.

I doubt it. For me a lot of the cost is the unclear usage cases meaning Samsung try to cover all bases. Just accept this should be used open more often than closed so you can reduce the 6 cameras to something more sensible and have a much simpler screen on the outside just for notifications.

A non-snarky comment. It's better they delay this than release it as-is. If Apple were in the same situation they'd likely respond the same way.
It does cast doubt on the tech for foldable displays being ready for the mass market though.

The same way Apple did away with the AirPower, it couldn't meet their standards. Rather than release it half assed, they scrapped it. It's why I don't even care if Apple is late to the game sometimes, they don't just release tech just for the sake of being 'first.'

They have their own failures with the keyboards but not like Samsung, which seems to have problems every time they have a major release.

Yup. It took them eight years to come up with a crappy prototype that they were all set to pawn off on customers at top dollar. So I really can’t imagine they’ll be able to fix the problem in a few weeks or months. It wouldn’t surprise me if this model never ships and they launch a Fold 2 next year or the year after.

Eight years is a long tease, and the shipping date was set for Friday. I guess this is worse than the AirPower fiasco; depends on whether Samsung ever ships a decent Fold (and whether Apple ever cracks AirPower).

Imagine if Apple had released the AirPower and due to unexpected use (i.e. 3 phones), it overheated and burned down peoples' houses. Apple would recall the product, apologize, settle some lawsuits but the damage would have been done. Nobody would ever trust it again.

Instead, despite having allegedly mass produced AirPower units for sale, an issue that they were dealing with (probably overheating) cropped up again after they thought they had fixed it. So Apple took the embarrassing route. They said they couldn't make the product after all.

I don't think that's the end of it. Given that they got so close to a shipping product, they're probably going to go back to the drawing board without the pressure of a release date and an anxiously awaiting public, and rebuild AirPower from the ground up with what they learned, and possibly not be so ambitious about whichever goals were holding it back, and in a year or two, announce that they cracked it and it'll be shipping today. That's a triumphant comeback, rather than a forever tainted product.

Samsung is doing the opposite. They're going to insist on shipping this thing, expecting people to read instructions and then when Galaxy Folds starting breaking, they'll tell complaining customers that they didn't read the fine print and took off the film or let dirt get under the screen. What they're going to be creating is a ton of new Apple customers.

The Galaxy Fold is built for a sterile lab, not every day use.

Yes , because apple saw itself as the golden standard in quality! But relax, they aren’t anymore,so,people won’t go,crazy anymore. Have fun with your AirPower!
Are you insinuating that I'm a fanboy? You must be new around here.

At least Samsung admit there is a problem with their devices unlike Apple with the bent iPad pros and #bendgate with iPhone 6

Oh well that’s alright then, they should just go ahead and launch it as it is.

People purchasing it should be happy and grateful about Samsung’s acknowledgement....

It's just one of those things that you weren't sure out of the gate if a folding display is going to last long, and secondly, what is the point of a folding display?

What problems did Samsung have with the Note 8, Note 9, S10 etc.?

Apple couldn't even get AirPower to work, released bent iPad Pros, thermally unstable MacBooks with speakers that could destroy themselves and broken keyboards.

The same point as a folding computer i.e. a laptop. To make higher performance devices more portable.

What i wonder many of us macrumors experts (aka haters) could have prevented that. What’s wrong with Samsung, are they fearing going to prison camp if not delivering what some ceo psycho asks them?

Your AirPower reference only refutes your own statement. Apple didn't release AirPower not just because it was below reviewer/customer standards but also below Apple's own standards. Samsung clearly has a different set of standards.

This is bad...... unlike Apple’s charge pad vapourware, Samsung Fold has probably went into production. What will they do with the models already made?

A little late to the party - aren't we? Why are first-buyers beta-testers? Why did they not figure this out before?

Your examples are pretty poor and not comparable.

You have reviewers units who are getting bubbles and aren't operating at all from removing that protective shield that doesn't say do not remove.

A keyboard or bent ipad isn't causing your device to be totally inoperable.

Burn them with the never ending fire of the Galaxy li-ion batteries.
