Hey looking to buy a note 3, currently the only ones i see people selling here (not overpriced) are the snapdragon version, does it really makes a difference ? i mean in regards of battery and performance ?

thanks !

The snapdragon one is just as good and in most respects better than the exynos version. The GPU is the snapdragon version outpaces the exynos gpu.

Temptation strikes again.

I visited my local Costco and they had a small Samsung kiosk so I got to play with the Note 3 and I'm kind of itching for something like this but I have questions, and concerns, so if some of you folks knowledgeable with the Note 3 and Android could chime in, I'd be very appreciative.

First, I'm on VZW and I'm not planning on jumping ship, with that said, how easy/hard is rooting this phone. I'll stay on the stock OS for a little while - I'm thinking maybe 2 days :p One of the things I enjoyed about Android in the past was the custom Roms.

Secondly, its been ages since I've been on android, so some of the basics escape me. Like what's available for syncing my Music (I'll be staying on iTunes since I'll have an iPad), my contacts and calendar. Do I have to move off Apple's stuff to sync calendar/contacts with my phone?

Messaging, back in the day when I was on a Nexus, I could not receive or send emoji, is that still the case? My wife and iPhone packing friends won't be switching to a different app just to accommodate my needs, so what's the scoop with Emoji.

I'm kind of hesitant to take the leap for another reason and that we're in mid cycle. I usually buy my phones when they first come out. I wonder what risks I'll incur with the Note 4 coming out in 6 months.

You are me:) I had my second play with one on the weekend, laggy/buggy is my concern, just felt like it especially after leaving and using my 5s. Or maybe it was just the store model not set up right.
Contacts can be synced from gmail if you have a google account or something.
The bigger screen and s pen is my draw card. They are still $800 pus here in Australia. Although going for around $600 or so on ebay.

Can't speak for the model you used but mind has never lagged.. When I had my s4 it lagged quite a bit. 4.4 kitkat shouldn't make it lag anyway though

Well picked up a 2 week old Note 3 N9005 32GB for $500 this arvo. Best local new price here is $820 and they are going for $600 plus on Ebay.
At this point this will be my personal/play phone with a prepaid sim and my 5S for business.
Its all new coming from 3 iPhones and BB before that.
Whats the navigon app like, i just bought a navman might sell it if its any good.
Any tips for a iPhone user?

First problem call quality is not as clear/loud as 5S. Is that right?

I found my Note 3 managed to get faint service in areas my old iPhone 5 couldn't. Possibly due to it not being made out of metal.

As for tips? Turn off all the S-crap. S-Voice, smart stay etc. It'll run much smoother. My tips for using Android are, try going in with an open mind. I've seen too many people try to use Android as though it were iOS, trying to do things the iOS way, they'd get frustrated because things were slightly different and then declare that android was complicated.

Navigon app is good, but it prefer it on iOS tbh. For navigation on Android I just use google maps navigation. It's surprisingly highly accurate (and free)...

Tips for iPhone user...

1) when setting up your email if you have a legacy .mac or .me email address - make sure you go back into account settings afterwards as it doesn't always add full server details when it auto sets up the account.

2) if you want to drag and drop files to your note 3 and avoid Samsungs Kies software, use Android File Transfer

3) iSyncr is great for syncing iTunes content to your device and maintaining folder structure and artwork and tag comparability.

4) turn off s-crap you really don't need, saves hugely on your battery life. If you don't use google now, turn that off too along with location history tracking. That too will bolster your battery life even more.

Call Reception / Signal I found to be actually very good In areas that are often black spots for mobile reception here.

Call quality I found good but you do have to adjust to positioning the ear piece. That being said I find Samsung devices not to have best call quality compared to some foyer devices. My BB Bold 9900, and Z10 had better call quality and even my Lumia 1520 has better call quality over the Note 3. That being said the Note 3 has better reception and call quality than the S4.

Does switching s voice off in settings really help battery life even if you don't use it anyway?

How do you turn it off?

Google maps uses data right? Navigon doesn't? Might just keep my new Navman smart gps you can add addresses with the app from note or 5S.
I just doesn't sound as clear/loud as my 5S. Reception is fine.

SmoothSync for iCloud will let you sync up your iCloud calendars and contacts (there's an app for each) - I've been using them for a few years without any problems at all and can definitely recommend them!

Music wise you have a few choices. I put all my music into Google Play Music (free for up to 20,000 tracks) because I also subscribe to Google Play Music All access and have the Google Music uploader on my iTunes machine so whenever anything is added to iTunes it gets uploaded to Google Music. Before I used Google Play Music, I used iSyncr for iTunes which lets you sync music from iTunes to your android device wirelessly

I don't use emoji so can't help you there, I'm afraid :)

I simply disabled it in app settings. If I wasn't using it - seemed pointless it being enabled regardless tbh.

----------

Hold down on S-Voice and drag it over "App Info". Tap "Disable".

Or from touchwiz launcher, simply go into app drawer and press menu button and choose unistall/disable app option. Then click on S-Apps (or any others including carrier ones if there) that you don't use and it will disable them if they are stock apps and delete them if they are third party ones for you.

I disabled Chat On, Storybook, S-Voice, S-health etc...

Do you just click on the app and go to settings inside it? Story album I don't use either

No. If your using Nova click the app in the app drawer as if you are moving it to the desktop and then drag it up to App Info.

Then click on disable app. It will remove updates and disable the factory version.

If you are using Touchwiz

Go into the app drawer and press the capitative menu button on the left of your phone and choose uninstall / disable apps option.

Then simply press the - key on those stock factory apps. It will then do the same as above - uninstall updates to them and then disable the factory version.

:)

Cheers Mac

Can always depend on you:)

When i played with one in store i could touch the side of the screen on both sides and a row of apps would show, how do you set that up?

Yep. Everyone should be getting it, it depends on your carrier & territory when it will be available.

Check in system / about / software update

It's a 350 mb update

Checked for software update and message come up, your device has been modified software updates are not available?

Your phone has likely been rooted, or had an official rom with conflicting CSC device code.

If it's rooted you need to unroot.

If it's conflicting CSC, Download Kies on your mac/PC and check for the update through Kies.

OTA updates are not available on rooted devices or even devices with official stock roms - but conflicting device ID.
