If it's rooted you need to unroot.

If it's conflicting CSC, Download Kies on your mac/PC and check for the update through Kies.

OTA updates are not available on rooted devices or even devices with official stock roms - but conflicting device ID.

1) Check your phone. Do you have an application called #superuser installed. If so you are rooted. Launch it and go into settings and choose un-root.

2) if you don't have the app installed, you can download it from Google play and when launched it will tell you if you are rooted or not.

Failing those simply launch Kies, connect your phone and look at the info. It will tell you what firmware is installed and what firmware is available.

Thanks for your help. No didn't have that app, i got it but doesn't say anything. The su binary not found box was ticked when i opened it and if you touch the tem unroot box it won't tick?
In about it has android 4.4.2. I downloaded kids on my mac and its stuck on connecting, and people say iTunes is bad.

Yep Kies is horrid.

When i swipe down when connected to my mac i cant get the connection to show up on the phone. Tried another mac and same thing. About to stick this thing on ebay lol.

Do. If you can launch Knox it means you have not been rooted and are on a stock firmware (whether this corresponds to your devices CSC or not).

If you can't launch Knox it's likely the device has been rooted at some point, or had been running roms.


Regarding Kies

With Kies make sure you are using the proper USB cable that came with the device - sometimes it doesn't like some 3rd party USB cables ....

Getting message, your device is not authorised to enter samsung knox mode. Does that mean knox has been tripped? Only have the samsung usb cable that came with it. It connected once but just kept spinning.
kitkat is not available in Australia yet i found out.
Is it normal for the phone signal bar to go down to 0 then 1 and up?

Its making a good sonos controller🙂

Yep. Seller previous has tripped Knox counter.

Which means that it likely has been either rooted at some point, or was running a custom rom. Or could have tripped it flashing a stock rom on to the device via Odin.

Chances are seller flashed a 4.4.2 stock rom onto the device before selling it, but it doesn't match the CSC (model identifier) and so OTA will not work.

Device CSC has to match the rom - you should however be able to update via Kies if you can get Kies to work.

If you can track down the devices CSC - you can always flash the proper stock firmware for the device and that would allow OTA updates in the future, but you will never be able to use Knox at this point and the device sadly has no hardware warranty because of Knox trip.

Ok, i am not worried about warranty but would like to get the kitkat update when available. No way can i get kies to work.

If your on 4.4.2 you already have the update though...

What version are you on in about under settings?

It says android version 4.4.2?

I have connected to kies but it is just beach balling. Its making my 15 MBPr go at 93c too.

So if i am on kitkat i should be right for updates? I have all my contacts on through gmail/google.

Besides kies what other way do i sync?

If not i might get my cash back as he said it was as new with 2 year warranty. which would mean spending another $150 plus for another, don't think its worth it for a second phone. won't be giving up my business 5S anytime soon after this lol.

Kies is the biggest pile of crap I've ever used. When I had my original galaxy note I naively tried for many a frustrating hour to do an update. Now it's been deleted from my laptop. It's a waste of time and hard drive space.

If Knox is tripped it has no warranty.

But yeah there are always work a rounds for updating the firmware, you are not at a dead end.

Worse case scenario when a new firmware is released you will be able to download the firmware from samfirmware and flash it via Odin.

If you want to sync music you can use iSyncr for mac - if you want drag drop syncing just install android file transfer (Google it for link).

I just got it for a private after hours/weekends phone for mainly around the house, was going to get a 5c as i have all Apple but thought i would try a note 3 as it was cheap enough, its all working great. Wouldn't give up my 5s as a business phone works too good with my MBPr and iPad.
Don't want to put music on it as i use Sonos/rdio and tune in radio, wouldn't mind getting some photos on it from iPhoto on my mac though.
See how it goes.
They take forever to charge.
It opens apps quick maybe not as smooth as my 5s.
For a big phone the apps are not as big or clear as 5s.

One problem i am having is the phone will charge on usb in my macbook but with Android sync it says no android device found?

It has to be your cables....

Is it the proper Samsung charger and USB 3 cable you have ? Seriously if so it shouldn't take that long to charge ...

If they haven't given you the genuine cables it could explain the slow charging and the issues with Kies and Android File Transfer.

Its a white cable with Samsung written on each end? Its been on charge for 4 hours and gone from 47 to 94 percent.
