I mostly use Google Photos, but I think there’s a bug. If you take a screenshot and tap on it while it’s still ‘floating,’ any edits (like cropping) aren’t saved, even after hitting save. However, if you tap one of the action buttons below the screenshot and edit from there, the changes do stick.

Interestingly, there’s no setting I know of to choose a default gallery app, and I’m not sure why it defaults to Google Photos. I’d be fine using Samsung’s Gallery app for quick edits, but tapping the screenshot defaults to Google Photos, which, as I mentioned, doesn’t work. If you open the screenshot manually in Google Photos, edits are saved properly.

Does this happen to you too?
I hit the pencil and then I edit and hit the down arrow seems to be working fine

Actually it's the opposite. You are unable to set Google Photos as the default gallery app on Samsung, which is my only complaint because I would actually prefer to set it as default.

Exactly, if you tap the pencil icon, it works. But if you tap the thumbnail instead (check out the picture I attached), it opens it in Google Photos (at least on my end), and any changes you make (like cropping) aren’t saved, even after hitting save.

Interesting indeed, so if you hit the thumbnail it takes you to the Samsung Gallery? 😮

Ah yes sorry I misread and likely why I didn't notice it. I either have the screenshot or hit the pencil if fixing immediately

I don't know if I have ever clicked on the thumbnail before but I just took a screenshot and when I tapped the thumbnail it gave me options on how I wanted to open it.

When i click on the thumbnail it takes me straight to photo editor, no open with option and no issues

You must have a default not set
Right. I haven't picked anything for a default. That's probably why the other poster has it opening in Google photos because that's one of the options besides gallery.

So, very interesting, thanks for all the testing you do folks Bkdodger, mjschabow, Scott craft.

After seeing Scott craft's example of the options he gets when tapping on the thumbnail, I thought, hmm, I’ve never gotten that menu asking which app I want to use to open a screenshot I just took. As I mentioned before, mine always goes straight to Google Photos, and any edits I make there aren’t saved.

So, I decided to download Adobe Acrobat to see if I could trigger that menu, and it worked (screenshot attached). It asked if I wanted to use Adobe Acrobat, (Samsung) Gallery or Google Photos.

First, I tapped “Open once” with Google Photos, made some changes, hit save, but the changes weren’t saved (again).

Then I tried again, this time choosing “Open once” with (Samsung) Gallery, made edits, and they were saved.

Finally, I took a third screenshot and selected “Open always” with (Samsung) Gallery. Now, whenever I tap the thumbnail, it opens in (Samsung) Gallery and all my edits are saved 👁️👄👁️.

I'm glad you got it working like you want. Seems like there's always something new to learn with these phones.

As I thought you had not set a default Gallery app :)

However did you check using say file manager that your Google Photos edits were simply saved in a folder that is selected hidden from the gallery app ? ie they are there but you can view them currently.

We had to do this for @mjschabow so he could see his Google Photos for email attachments etc

It should have given me a prop to choose a default gallery automatically after having more than gallery, which is my case, since I did download Googe Photos 🤔. Uhhh, a hidden folder, why Samsung? 🫢. The thing is, I did the edits with Google Photos and then opened Google Photos and the edits were gone :/

Too bad that it only half works though. I'd really like it if when posting to Facebook for it to pull up my Google Photos app. But I've been able to work around this minor annoyance now.

I have dabbled in Android a few times over the years, and I have always returned to iPhone. Maybe some of you can answer a few "switching to android" questions... One of the things that annoyed me with Samsung was when I shot a photo, it was saved to the Samsung Gallery, but I was using Google Photos. I didn't want 2 copies of the same photo and have to manage that nonsense. With new Samsungs like the ZF7, can this be setup so that you do all editing etc in G Photos and don't have to manage two separate galleries? In other words, once the photo is taken, must it be saved to the S Gallery and also G Photos? Also, I am a Mac user (all Apple stuff, watch, iPads for work, several iOS and iPadOS-only apps I would lose if going to android). But messaging on my Mac is quite handy and I do a lot of it. For SMS syncing to Mac, how is that Google messaging site on the Mac these days? Is that the best way to manage messaging on a Mac if I get a Galaxy or a Pixel phone? So tempted by the ZF7 but not excited about the Samsung bloat and duplicate functionality. Never had a Pixel. Have a 16 Pro Max right now and the 17 looks like a crappy upgrade. I use T Mobile in the USA if that matters. Many thanks all!

To answer your question about photos, yes you just have to turn on backup on Google photos. Essentially what I do is I just ignore the fact that Samsung gallery exists, and the minute I snap a photo, it shows up in my Google Photos. The only annoyance I have sometimes is that if I'm posting something to Facebook, it does not allow you to use Google photos as the actual photo picker, so if you are planning a large post with 10 plus pictures, I would definitely recommend going to Samsung gallery and putting them as favorites to help you sort through photos when making a post. I will be honest, that annoyed me so much a couple years ago that I ended up switching back to iPhone. Now, I just deal with it because I really don't like Apple at all. But if there is one annoyance, that's the one and be prepared to deal with it.

thank you for the info, so im still a bit confused though... are all your photos still being duplicated in Gallery and G Photos? example, I buy a Fold, install G Photos, take some photos, they get saved to Gallery, and they get saved to G Photos... must I still go back to Gallery to delete photos after I have deleted from G Photos? I can see my local storage getting used up quickly if this is the case, and annoying to have to manage two galleries constantly.

So I have the 512 gb version so it doesn't really get filled up quickly. But Google photo is does a great job of letting you delete everything on your Samsung Gallery app with the click of one button. I usually did it once per month when I had the 256gb Ultra. With 512 I don't really have a need to.

Since today is iPhone day I thought I might share the things I miss the most from iOS :

  1. Tapping the top of the screen to scroll up, no matter where you are, it jumps to the top instantly. I know Samsung’s browser has an arrow for this, but what about the rest of the apps?
  2. Looking up words with a long press, on iOS, you’d get a popup with definitions and translations. On Android, it kicks you into a full Google search, pulling you out of the current screen. Such a waste, especially with all that screen real estate, there’s more than enough room for an inline popup.
  3. Peeking into messages or emails, long pressing a conversation on iPhone lets you preview it without fully opening it, so the sender doesn’t see it as read. It’s perfect when I’m in a rush or too busy to reply 😈.
Is there something you miss from iOS?

All of those plus FaceID.

I’m struggling to find a case I actually like. Right now I’m using Samsung’s official silicone case, but it leaves both the screen and the hinge exposed, and the kick‑stand feels uncomfortable on my fingers.

I’d prefer a minimal case that matches the phone’s beautiful blue hue, by far my favorite phone color since the red HTC U11. I hate covering the finish with a plain black case. 🙄

I’ve already looked at several brands:

  • Attom/Matter – Nice wood‑fiber look, but they only make iPhone cases.
  • OtterBox – Too bulky for my taste.
  • Native, Moft, Smartish, Nomad, Moment, Incipit – iPhone‑only offerings.
  • Spigen – Only black or near‑black options.
  • Ring – Black or transparent only.
  • Caudabe & Caseology – No Fold 7 models.
  • DBRAND Grip Case – The only one that feels right, but it won’t ship until October.
Do you have any other recommendations? As you can see, I’ve exhausted most of the usual suspects. 😹

Hey folks, read almost all 62 pages of this thread. Interesting views and tips. As some of your folks here, I’m deep in the Apple ecosystem but looking to merge my iPhone and iPad mini into one device. Still need it to work with my AirPods Pro and Mac. Few questions to clarify:

1. Anyone tried AndroPod with AirPods Pro’s? Do they work well?
2. Any way to get AirTags to work or forget them?
3. G Photos and Gallery, they basically keep two copies of the same photo and I’ll need to manually delete one? I’m going from above posting.
4. Moving photos from iCloud to G Photos - assuming photos will be organised by date and location, metadata is carried over? When iFold or whatever comes out, I should not have an issue moving back to iCloud?
5. With G Photos - is there a way like iCloud where it optimises and keeps a lighter version of photo to save storage? I got the 512GB one but want to be safe.
6. Passwords - love how it syncs across my Mac and phone etc. Gather that I’ll need to use a diff app. Anyone can recommend an app? Can I set it as the default app on my Mac?
7. Can I run two eSIMs simultaneously on the phone? On google, it says no but one forum says yes.
8. Any other issues to anticipate upon moving and making it sync seamlessly with MacOS?

Thank you for your kind help.

Sorry I actually don't really know the answer to many of those questions, but I can tell you for #3, Yes, there is a copy on your internal storage which would appear in your Samsung Gallery app, and then you can back it all up to Google Photos. So what I do is I back it all up to Google photos and then if I need to clear some space, I do so from Google Photos and it deletes it from Samsung Gallery. But it does not delete it from Google Photos. If there's one complaint I have about Samsung it's that we can't just disable the Samsung Gallery app and only use Google Photos for everything. I'm sure if I was brave enough to hook it up to my computer and try, I could but I just deal with it. It's not really that bad once you get used to it.
