Will this be a free update for those who already purchased it?

Website also shows same old iOS 6 style design, who cares about a new icon if it's same old design

Same here! I hope they don't make me pay again!
I purchased a few of them on the iOS and OSX. I shouldn't have to pay for in app ****.
I think this in appp stuff has ruined the ios experience. Just like popups have ruined the Android tablet. My daughter has a lot of stupid ads popping up in every app on her galaxy tablet.

Apple doing in-app purchases? They better not take anything away from people who paid for all of these apps. According to the article, it seems like it is just additional content that they couldn't license for free, so I think this will be OK.

Thats what I was thinking.

Labelling the change as an improvement or not an improvement is subjective.

Stating that the design changes are in line with the overall iOS 7 theme: Then yes, they are an improvement.

Either way, it doesn't bother me. You only see those icons for the few seconds you are navigating to them on-screen.

Speaking of which, I think the iOS 7 icons are overally much easier to distuingish than the old ones. The old icons tended to have some bluish background (at least a lot of them, like Mail, Safari, Photos, Stocks, Videos, App Store, etc.), and too much tiny detail. They were like mini-photographs. An icon should serve another kind of purpose and I think this new style represents that quite well.

I know I'm beating a dead horse but...

How can anyone think the iOS 7 icons are an improvement?

I don't get how you can think they are _not_ a huge improvement. They actually function as proper, attractive little icons instead of overly detailed, busy pictures shrunk to an absurdly tiny size.

I'm not mad about anything and I am not complaining about anything. All I said in my original post is that what you get for free is usually free for a reason. I.e. it's value is low to nil if it is given away; either as valued by Apple the supplier or as valued by the demand of the user. It is a fairly common saying/phrase (or variant of it) so I am not raising anything hugely controversial here. Anyway, we all see different value in different apps so it is not worth going on about it.

Stay cool.

I wasn't saying you were complaining, I was just telling you why he said they are not free and commenting on the general complaints about it going free in this thread.

My understanding is that skeuomorphism is more about the texture and layout.

Word 98 was not skeuomorphic because it had a floppy icon to save a document.

GarageBand, however, uses skeuomorphism everywhere. It will be interesting to see the new version on Tuesday.

GarageBand NEEDA skeuomorphism. You really don't want a piano/guitar/drums to become text.

So is GarageBand free for all devices running iOS 7 or just new devices?

It will most likely be the same scheme as the others.

In a way I rather hope it is true. And that the other apps get plug-in type features both free and IAP as needed. Then we might get the ability for more themes, templates, fonts, features like MathType. Really make these apps pop. Some of the built in stuff might even move to downloads rather than built in.

And if it's the first step to doing such things on a global scale even better.

If he bought the device a after Sept 1st then they would be free. If not, he still has to pay for the apps anyway. It is not free for everyone, just new devices. It's likely a SOX law issue about how they account for software sales or something.

Oh, I must have misunderstood it. He bought it last week, but it was with an iPhone 5, so it wouldn't be free even though it was after Sept. 1?

Why is everyone bitching? This is just the same model almost as it is on the Mac. It comes free with the hardware, but you pay for upgrades. In this case, in app purchases for extra features.... but Garage band always had those in the way of loop packs.

That's a pretty good move to make GarageBand free.

I think there's a lot of things in that app that make it overwhelming for people who just want to throw some tracks down with their own instrument and microphone.

I bet most of those who are complaining don't even use the app day in and out. They just toy with it every few months.

I much prefer it on the desktop side to be honest.

I prefer Cubasis, $49.99, but was worth every penny.

So it's frowned upon when a developer charges in app purchases yet Apple is praised when they do it.

Depends on what the pricing is, we don't know what that is yet. If the new cost of what you get now is higher than the current $4.99, that's bad. But it's also possible that the expansions total less than that. This also gives them the option to offer much more content than they'd be able to for a total of $4.99. Charging for things like extra lives or powers in a game is annoying, but if they're charging for actual additional content like instruments or plugins that's no different than having to buy AU plugins for the OSX version of GB or Logic. Charging for GB content is nothing new on the OSX side, they have been offering jam packs and lessons as additional purchases for years.

And let's not forget this story is about six apps, five of which look to be free and one with extra purchases.

iOS isn't free, it is built into the cost of an iPhone.

But you are right, Apple are using the 'freebies' to sell their hardware.

But what about when they were charing $10 for iOS 5? :p

the new iWork package can be considered part of iOS now.

I am sure they want to get users familiar with these apps before Office comes out?

They have never charged for iOS updates on phones, only on iPod Touches.

Well, I purchased GarageBand for a few bucks a while ago.... So I have to pay again for the instruments I guess...?

Seems unlikely. The logical thing would be to give current owners the new version with current content unlocked.

That's my initial fear. If I update the app, will I lose the current sound sets that I presumably paid for with my initial purchase? If it's the same app, but with even more content available, that's fine with me. If I update and end up losing some sounds and functionality, that wouldn't be good.

Yes, completely agree. I'll be well pissed off if I lose any functionality. Could give a toss if people now get the app free - just don't want to lose anything I've had access to by paying for the app.

UPDATE: I hate in-app purchases. I turn them all off on the devices in my house. If I buy an app, I want all of it to work from the get-go. I don't want to have to pay for different types of pens or instruments etc. And I especially hate advertising in apps! Just all my own opinions of course...

They're bitching because the package is getting smaller and they're going to have to pay again. Man, let me know when you guys upgrade to Pro Tools and tell me how THAT goes.

If you don't like it, keep the spare IPA backed up. It'll probably still work in iOS 10. I'm still using iOS 2/3 software myself with no problem, other than it dosn't fit my screen all the way, but it still mostly works.

Or look for a better DAW, which will suit your needs better. Like I said, I use Cubasis, it's $49.99, but it's great. They just added some really cool plugins to it actually. Best of all, it has tutorials and a manual to follow along with that you can have a look at and master in one weekend and keep for referencing later. If you have Cubase, you can even import your stuff from the app. Comes with a load of loops/instruments, you can import your own, and it has Audiobus support!

The best purchase I've made on my iPad by far, and the updates just make it even better.

you are not paying for the app and then paying for additional features.

The app is free, if you want some of the additional features within the app, you will have to pay.

You may hate it, but developers have to get paid somehow, and unfortunately the same people who spend $5 on coffee or cigarettes every day won't pay a few dollars for an app they can use for years to come.

I what thinking that Numbers is Green Like Excel

But pages and Keynote are switched from Word and PowerPoint

Maybe is to avoid a lawsuit, but when I see those colors I immediately associate these apps with their Microsoft office equivalent...

MS just changed their colors in Office 2013, some of them. I doubt they care what color Apple uses.

The only positive to the new icons is they fit in better with the other horrible iOS 7 icons.

the style has changed. get over it.

did you get so bent out of shape when Adobe changed all of their photoshop or illustrator icons every year? nope. ask yourself why... theyre icons. they will always be changed and re-designed. always.
