i'm more excited for Tuesday's event than I was for the iPhone event for some reason...

iPhoto still isn't free. I know someone who just bought it last week. What do you do if you did that? Can they get their money back?

I suspect The Sarbanes-Oxley Act...

i dont understand why apple isnt simply making them free in general. such cheaps!

Remember when Apple had to charge $1.99 for QuickTime upgrades and to unlock software features in units already sold like $3 to activate a higher speed Wi-Fi capablity in iMac and Macbooks that was never announced at the time of sale. They had to do it this to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley financial reporting obligations in that it was difficult task to report the opportunity cost of distributing free product vs being able to include a free products actual cost as a part of product offering.

So I guess new customers can easily have their "free" software cost covered and accounted for as being associated as a component part of the device sold with a new iOS device sale.

This is just my guess...

Is Sarbanes-Oxley Forcing Apple To Charge You To Upgrade Your WiFi?

So now the question is...."Is Sarbanes-Oxley Forcing Apple To Charge You For iLife and iWorks On iOS?"

iWonder...

I have no intention to attempt to understand how anyone think they are an improvement...But, with that being said, I am with you on this one, pal...

iOS 7 icons are fine for most people (except whiners)

By the way, doesn't your signature need some correction? I assume you are using iOS 6 not wanting to upgrade to iOS 7!! It says no downgrade to iOS 7 until the drunk 2 year old designed icons are FIXED!

Which translates to never ;)

What's wrong with iWeb? I can't teach my mom HTML code, sorry.

Simply because there are better options out there that are easier to use and produce a better end product. Google We Designer, Rapidweaver, and Sandvox all come to mind.

Boo. So it's frowned upon when a developer charges in app purchases yet Apple is praised when they do it. Makes sense.

Who is praising Apple for this, and what had they previously said about IAP?

I will be getting a ipad mini 2 when it comes out so I will get these for free but if it gets backed up to icloud will it let me install them on my ipad 2 for free?

If he bought the device a after Sept 1st then they would be free. If not, he still has to pay for the apps anyway. It is not free for everyone, just new devices. It's likely a SOX law issue about how they account for software sales or something.

Wouldn't it be smarter to just have iPhoto be apart of iOS7 and combine it with the camera/camera roll to make ONE kick-ass stock app that does everything? I would imagine it wasn't that popular on it's own in the app store as there are many cool choices for photo editing apps, but I could be wrong. It may be difficult to make it easy to use, but if they could pull it off, it would really make iOS7/iPhone stick out and appear more attractive out of the box

I agree with you but wouldn't it be even cooler if they used the iCloud technology to actually sync images and edits you made to one picture across you iOS photo libraries, as well as iPhoto/Aperture photo libraries so that you can seamlessly edit and manage your photos, from your iPad or iPhone or your mac?

This is something I found very disappointing with iPhoto for iOS and I really hope they find a way to make it possible!

Another serious improvement, which I think they will add, is to be able to transfer of photos with the filter effects applied to them in iOS 7. Currently, the photos are transferred without any effect. The only way to preserve the photo with applied filter is to email them to myself, and that's not user friendly!

In any case, I hope they have made more changes than just cosmetic ones!

You get what you pay for. If they are free, there is an obvious reason why. That's all they're worth.

Since when is Apple hardware free?

----------

Folders also look extremely ugly in iOS 7 and are less functinal showing only nine apps at once. Despite individual preferences for more or less detailed icons, all people like good icons and all people hate bad icons. Most of these new icons are not only simple and clean but also very bad designs. So bad even that it is not quite clear if any real designer was actually involved in the design process?

Jony Ive Put Apple's Marketing Team in Charge of iOS 7 Icon Design

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet. ;)

yes, once you have downloaded it will show them as purchased and you can download from any other device.

I downloaded them onto my 5S, and I can now download them for free on any of my other devices.

Pages icon

Pages is the app, I am using on a regular base and do not want to hide inside a folder. So I am actually happy, that at least a nice orange color was chosen.

Indeed.

So, a big **** YOU to people who paid for the apps?

Typical.

Since when is the GarageBand app Apple hardware?

he is saying that you have to buy new apple hardware to get Garage Band for free.

It is not free for any user, you have to purchase a NEW apple device.

This is the equivalent of complaining because you bought a phone and a case, and now best buy is having a sale where you get a free $5 case with the purchase of the phone and so you are mad that you didn't get the free case.

Wrong.

Basic lifestyle apps are now free. Basic task oriented apps from Apple are free [as software to drive future hardware sales].

I am talking about it from the point of view of an app developer (in the App Store). If Apple themselves make their apps for free with IAP, then it is a clear signal to everyone else.

Right, and if I DL it with my new device, can I DL it to my older ones on the same account?

Probably not.... :mad::apple:

Yes, actually you can.

Why is it everyone assumes the worst all the time? Same with the overwhelming attitude towards the Garageband IAP. Nobody even knows the details about the update and there are still tons of people going off on a rant about having to repurchase current functionality on the assumption that the free version will be gimped and the IAP will just get you back to where you are now. Much more likely is that the functionality you have now will be intact on the new free version and the improvements will be IAP, such as the increase from 8 tracks to up to 32, new instruments or intrument variants, etc that are not currently available at all.

Relax, you'll probably find out tomorrow, but until then, how about not wasting energy on ranting about something based on an assumption that probably isn't even accurate.

"Interactive Charts" in Keynote sounds interesting.

And yes, the icons suck something fierce.

I'm not mad about anything and I am not complaining about anything. All I said in my original post is that what you get for free is usually free for a reason. I.e. it's value is low to nil if it is given away; either as valued by Apple the supplier or as valued by the demand of the user. It is a fairly common saying/phrase (or variant of it) so I am not raising anything hugely controversial here. Anyway, we all see different value in different apps so it is not worth going on about it.

Stay cool.

The most interesting thing to take away from all this is how (or if) Mavericks will be updated to provide more continuity. It's pretty obvious that next years OS X will be the official 'iOS 7-ification', but are Apple really going to wait a year before updating its icons? A tough one.

At least we know that the OS X iWork suite will get an update to ensure compatibility. That's probably the most exciting part about Tuesday's event!
