So I downloaded Garageband on my iPad 1 plugged in my Strat with a Griffin GuitarConnect cable and it works great!! I think apple has just blown away all competition in this area. I was pissed when I found out how expensive iShred and amplitude were for effects. Well thanks Apple because those are now obsolete.

I love the set up on the iPad it's easy to use and the effects and amp packages are easy to access. GREAT job.

If you like playing electric guitar go buy this now!!

For us muscial tech idiots

Can you hook up a MIDI keyboard that has a USB out into the iPad via the camera connection kit?

I've been playing with this for like 30 minutes and im in love. I'm gonna fail out of school playing with this. Also, for the guitar players, I just used a 1/4 input to 1/8 input adapter on my cable and plugged it into the headphone jack and it works just find. The only problem is you have to unplug the guitar to hear the recording through the speakers or headphones and the built in mic still picks up sound. Something I have to toy with though.

OMG, that's awesome. I'm going to hook up my M-Audio Keystation... once I buy the CCK, and a power adapter.

Does the iPad still support USB audio out? I want to hook it up to a DAC but I thought they took the functionality out in an update at some point.

This is getting more exciting now. Blue Yeti USB mic works with Garageband for voice tracks (need a usb hub) :D

Not sure, but audio appears to be muted on some occasions

Just bought it last night and had a brief play with it. It is absolutely awesome - an incredible piece of programming.

The iPad has some great audio apps already, but the ease of use of garageband blows most of them away.

Amazing!!!!

Im impressed! I can now easily write drums for my music, write a bassline, go home and record guitar! So far 3hours in and I love it!

This app is mind blowing for $5. I would have paid $50.

I messed around with this for a couple hours last night. It's amazing how many options are at your disposal. It's simple, yet complicated at the same time. It will take some time to completely get the hang of things if you want to record a full song with drums, guitars, etc, but it seems very doable.

I used to have a 4 track tape recorder and it's amazing to think that 10 years later I have something so much more advanced and I only paid $5 for it. Perfect audio quality, 8 tracks instead of 4. It's like a dream come true. This will probably reignite my passion for creating music again.

yes you can, just export to itunes and import into imove.

also...

THE IRIG CABLE WORKS GREAT!

Are you not able to customize the chords on the Guitar? That really needs to be added.

Also you need to be able to turn off the auto-adjusting volume for the drums depending on how hard you hit. I notice it does not seem to work well and too often thinks I'm barely tapping it!

Ya, the sensitivity sucks. Makes playing the piano really hard.

Oops, you can. If you hit the wrench with the Guitar app open you can change the tuning. It won't let you make your own custom chords (which would be really nice for an update, but at least you can change the tuning with these base chords.)

I agree with this completely. It's not a perfect science having it detect how hard I'm hitting, so you need to be able to disable that completely.

Awesome app. There is so much to explore. In some instruments, there is a pitch setting whch lets you smoothly transition from one note to the other. The fact it is available on many different instruments is the awesome part. All these advanced features for just $5.00. Unbelievable.

There is a bit of a delay to load and also to change instruments. I thought it was that way in iPad. I tried it with iPad 2. From a cold start, it took around 8 seconds to display the instrument view. Not bad at all, but the difference in delay between iPad and iPad 2 is not that much.

Now to some minor but counter intuitive parts of this otherwise incredibly awesome app.

It took me some time to realize that I am always in the context of making a song. It was not obvious when I first got into garageband. I was just playing some instruments. But somehow I got into editing that but I struggled quite a bit t to get back to playing the instruments. I had to pick 'New Song' to get back to that view. This discoverable UI thing is quite frustrating.. Apple seems to take that concept too far. How the hell am I supposed to know that I am in the context of a song when I first launched it? If I am not recording a song or editing a song, why am I in the context of a song? The way it presented the display to me, I naively thought it is a place to play with the instruments without even thinking about composing a song.

What confused me even more is, when I hit the Home button when in Garage band, as it transitioned to the home screen, a red banner appeared at the top with the word "Garage band (recording)".. Well, I did not press any record button. I did not want it to be recording something in the background, wasting space etc. So I killed it forcefully from the multitasking bar. Later I realized I need not worry about it. But that was a bit unsettling red banner.

The help button is nice, it puts up little yellow thingies next to the controls explaining what it is. May be, Apple can add a few more hints like that to make the UI a bit easier to discover.
