One of the things I wonder about sharpness issues is if people who tried XR and thought it looked whack, have tried another XR unit or picking up a handful of the demo units? Could be panel manufacturer / quality control variation as with everything with a screen

I have to admit, I own the XS Max, and one of the reasons I Purchased this model, I really was anticipating having the larger OLED panel, and side-by-side comparison with the XR and my Max, I can *barely* tell the difference at all between both dislays, and I consider myself a ‘tech enthusiast’ (If that tells you anything). So in theory, being that these phones are so close in competition, I think the XR is the better value.
There was a guy with an XS Max who was seriously considering returning it for the XR when I was at the Apple Store.

.. the text is insanely close. I call BS on these YT reviewers who say it’s significant.. and I was getting paid to test devices before there was a YT. :)

I pay cash for the iPhone that matches the user’s needs. For my wife the 8 64GB because she doesn’t use it except for an occasional call. For my daughter the Xs Max 512GB because she doesn’t change phones often (we traded in the 6). For my boy the Pixel because he’s all in with Linux. For myself I’m going to try the Xr because I buy a phone every year, and I plan to upgrade my watch to series 4 and my tablet to the 3 gen IPP 12.9.

Don’t get me wrong, the XS is a great phone. I liked having a smaller phone.. but I just couldn’t get the XR out of my head. I prefer the LCD to the OLED.

Congrats OP. What color did you get it in? How has your new XR been treating you?

It’s been great. I got black. Tempted by red but love the all black look. I picked up the Apple case but don’t really like it. Have a Torras silicone coming today. Rolling the dice ..naked until I get the case. Happy with decision.

The black looks the best IMO, I'd go with the black.

Glad you are happy. Black looks nice, it’s a great choice. Personally got the Dinoco blue as it is my favourite color.

Yeah, I think there is less than a $250 value difference, but I really think value is in the eye of the beholder.
Some here have noticed less sharpness in text and have returned the XR since the difference was noticeable, or have purchased an IP8+. Tech reviewers such as Detroitborg have noticed that as well, so for some it's worth the difference.
I actually had a good look at my Max compared to an Xr and I can tell the difference. It’s more in sharpness of the next than in images. I also found that I like the punchier colours on my max. The Xr looked washed out in comparison. However this is nothing new to me. My 7 plus looked washed out compared to Samsung OLEDs.

Very well put. It reminded me of the difference between the Plus and the standard size phones, though even more noticeable because of the color...the XS Max vibrancy. The text is sharper for sure. I think those that say the XR screen has generalized "fuzzy text" are grossly exaggerating though. When I think of showing constant fuzzy text in many ways, it's the Pre Retina iOS devices.

I’ve had both the XS Max and now the XR and owned them both at the same time. The term “washed out” for the XR screen in comparison is no where near correct “FOR ME”.

So it really is each to their own. But it’s those kind of statements that put people off.

“Grainy”, “blurry”, “not sharp”, “washed out” are not what this XR screen looks like to my eyes so anyone who hasn’t seen them themselves yet and wants to buy one needs to go and spend some time with a hands on at the store.

OP I got rid of my Max for the XR and have absolutely zero regrets. I love the device and the £500 I saved went towards my IPP which i’m also chuffed with.

No complaints about the IPP screen either (for an LCD ;) ).

I won’t deny though, if someone asked me what the best phone on the market is currently, I’d always go with XS Max. It is an amazing phone.
For me it was just trying to be more sensible with money (which went out of the window when the iPad came along :p).

How do you find the screen on the XR? If I understand correctly it's a downgrade from 8p or XS in terms of resolution. Smaller fonts are noticeably less sharp on the XR upon close inspection.

Haha. Get in a very dark room, full brightness on an HDR YouTube video and the difference betweeen the XS Max and every other LCD phone Apple makes is laughable! The AMOLED panels blow them away. This is coming from someone sensitive to PPI and contrast now.

Haha - together with few potential issues: color shift , black smear , screen flicker , black crush , dimmer , lottery to find a good one , unevenly lite , cooler around the edges , burn in , grain or noise on low brightness, eye strain, longevity.

This crappy technology will be swept away once Microled will be affordable. Till then an OLED buyer should cross the fingers

Haha crappy technology? It’s absolutely amazing! It does indeed have its drawbacks but so does LCD. I had horrible uneven backlighting on my 7 Plus.

I’d rather have an LCD display on an iPad for battery savings alone, but nothing beats the color accuracy, contrast, and brightness of these AMOLED panels. They are the freaking bomb! It’s honestly a joy to watch anything on them and when compared to an 8 Plus you realize just how big of a change the XS Max was in one year. My two cents and I know others don’t see much of a difference but get them into low ambient light and then see!

Don't get me wrong. I do recognize the OLED screen , once is new , has deeper blacks, better contrast, viewing angles . I rather referred to this faulty technology which brings inside too many risks, longevity included, I'm not willing to take (cause I used to keep the same phone for 2 or 3 years).

Please share some sources that OLED is "faulty technology". More specifically, sources referring to Apple's OLED screens used on last years iPhone X models would be preferred.

The screen on my X looked just as gorgeous as the day I bought it when I turned it in to Verizon after over a year of moderate use.

You have just to google around to find material. Or you can even disregard it, I don't want to convince you.

So if you don't do all of those things in your normal usage, then it really doesn't matter which screen you have. ;)

From purely a value perspective, you made a great choice. And you end up with a bigger screen and a much better battery. Having the 128gb option is also a huge plus.

Well you may want to read the articles you post before using them as sources. The first one talks about the green line issue, which was fairly rare. The second article covers a multitude of iPhone X issues, with the only screen related issue being an unresponsive touch panel which was fixed with a software update (also mentioned in the article). The third source you posted simply states that Apple gave forewarning that with improper use, the OLED panels they used in the X may be susceptible to image retention or burn-in.

Keep Googling. I'll wait.

I won't , these sources are clear enough to me, if you read them. You said "issues are fairly rare" but I don't believe in that .
All expert articles I read during these months were enough for me to have a view. Will leave you with yours. Enjoy.

Fair enough. If you do another search regarding Apple's pre-iPhone X models you'll find just as many screen issues.

I had the XS for a while and my wife has the X.
The XR is not ‘washed out’.
The screen of the XR is a high-quality LCD.
I don’t notice any ‘less sharp’ and my eyes were just checked.. and very good. I am sure if I grabbed a magnifying glass I could find the XR slightly les crisp than the XS.
My main ‘text’ issue with the XR is that the standard size text is smaller than that of the XS unless you use Zoomed display mode. Adjusting the Text Size doesn’t affect text in apps like Safari.

I have compared both side by side and I find the display of the XR to be great. Funny that OLED fans bring up text clarity but leave out that their screens turn pink/yellow/blue depending on angle. THAT bugged me.
[doublepost=1544643860][/doublepost]I should add that when comparing the XS and XR you can see the blacks are not as deep on the XR. WTS, it is so close that you really have to stop reading or watching content to find it..
