The screens look the same to me. People are being overly influenced by specs. I have the XS and just bought my wife the XR. Both scenes look exceptionally good. I really can't say one is better than the other. Besides it's a 5 to 6 inch screen. With this size of screen it is physically hard to tell the difference. The only reason I would switch from one to the other is because of size and price. Nothing more.

I think people are reading way too much into this OLED vs LCD thing.

I always use Low power mode, it’s never disabled. I’m actually surprised how many are not aware of low power mode and it’s benefits, which obviously slows down the processor, the display is dimmed slightly, ect. But it really impacts the battery longevity significantly for those who need to savor as much as they can.
I like using low power mode but I wished there was a way to override the 30 sec screen off, but keep the lower processors speed.

I never noticed that until you mentioned it.

I've been in a quandary over XR vs XS (or $29 battery replacement vs. trade on my 6+) and found myself at a non-Apple store with a display that actually allowed side-by-side comparisons, something not possible with the separate tables at Apple stores.

On Safari, displaying a site with minimal styling (Macintouch), the text on the XR was actually larger.

Of course, the XS displays less information overall, requiring more scrolling, but I was aware of that.

I'm not sure what the cause/reasoning is behind the difference in text sizes, but it added yet another factor to consider.

As an aside, I also noticed the much warmer screen on the XS, TrueTone on or off. I generally prefer warmer rather than cooler temps, but the difference struck me more than any difference in text sharpness (which was minor to my eyes).

One of my main motivations in getting a new is the desire for something physically smaller. The XR wins a lot of logical arguments, but the only real size difference between it and the 6+ is that it's slightly shorter. If there was a smaller version of the XR, the decision would have been easy, but Apple being Apple, their product structures are often well-suited to goading people to choose the costlier option.

I prefer True Tone on the xr. I have both max and xr. The max tru tone is too warm for me. Also max vs xr, xr displays the same screen content. It’s 1:1 compared to the max. And of course the xr feel better in the hand.

Don’t get me wrong, the XS is a great phone. I liked having a smaller phone.. but I just couldn’t get the XR out of my head. I prefer the LCD to the OLED.

To be fair, I don't know how one can justify spending that much more over the XR based on the price difference alone

Sure the XS is the better phone but it's not 350$ better (price difference in Canada)

The screens don’t look the same to me. LCD and Oled each have their pluses and minuses. In bright direct sunlight each screen might look the same but lcd has a contrast ratio of 1400 to one, oled have a contrast ratio of a million to one. Whether that matters it’s up to the individual.

I have both when you put a case on an xs the thin bezels disappears and it looks lit a big bezel.

My point is people are being influenced by numbers and specs. Again you reference contrast ratios as proof one is better than the other. Another poster responded to me citing cost as the reason one is better than the other.

My question is does anyone actually look at the devices side by side to form an opinion or is it all based on specs?

I agree it's personal choice but claiming one is better than the other based on specs or cost without actually looking at both devices does not make sense to me.

The first sentence is: “the screens don’t look the same to me”. That is not being influenced by numbers, that is influenced by my eyesight.:)

After that I discussed numbers.

You aren’t wrong with contrast ratio specs

But 1400 to 1,000,000 to 1 makes it sound like black and white to color tv’s and I don’t really think that’s a fair assessment of the leap in quantifiable terms vs what the eye sees

And blacks are infinite. Will grant oled that

If the XS and XR was the same price, I would definitely get the XS. The price difference of the 128gb Xr and 256gb Xs is $350 + tax. Thats almost a $400 difference. So I went with the Xr. I pay in full for my phones so the $400 savings was a no brainer for me.

No **** Sherlock.

If a Ferrari and a Ford Fiesta both cost the same, which one would you choose?

Bad analogy, the Xs compared to Xr is no where close to being a Ferrari vs Fiesta. Get off your Xs high horse.

More accurate comparison is a Honda Accord EX to a Honda Accord LX. The Xs has like 2 features more than the Xr..... lol

Ferrari lol. It’s more like Honda Civic to Honda Accord. Frankly I like the current Honda Civic wayyyy better. And I like the xr more than my xs max. It’s better to hold. The civic size, to me is perfect. And while the screen on the xr is “less” than an expensive OLED it’s still pretty darn good! Day to day Battery life is better I think. The civic gets better mpg.

I like analogies.

I did a side-by-side comparison last year and did it again this year (X and Xs vs. 7). To me, the colors, whites and blacks are all noticeably better on the OLED displays when viewed side-by-side - no real contest. But I promise you that when I returned the X and went back the 7, I -never- thought "oh, I wish I had kept the X!" Noticeable in an A/B test does not necessarily translate to a real world problem. With any recent Apple LED display you really aren't giving up much, even though I think I could prove to you that the OLED display is better.

Maybe cars would be a good analogy. We can easily demonstrate that a Porsche 911 starts, stops and handles better/faster than your Subaru Forester. But in real life, daily driving, are you thinking "the Porsche goes so much faster"? Sure it does, but do you notice? Not a perfect analogy but still... ;)

^^^ wrote that before I saw the other car analogies here. ;)

If you mostly drive to work and local stores, would you care?

The difference of what you do, is pay full value for your phones, most consumers have no intention of doing that for a smart phone. So I could see why someone would opt for the XR simply because the differential of price point.

To each his own. I would never go back to LCD by choice. Hey you saved yourself some money also so that's a thing.
It's not really about $ for some of us. My eyes don't feel as strained using an XR/11/8[8+]/7[7+]...or with a Series 5 Apple Watch. If it were about $, I would have put a $50 bias light from amazon on the back of our TV. I went with a non-pwm dimmer and the strips together set me back $250. I only have one set of eyes. :D

Dug up a 15 month old thread for that comment?
