661-13163 15" Top Case, with Battery, ANSI, Space Gray, that's the new part number for future reference. And the keyboard does feel more responsive.

Agreed. I have had zero issues in my 2018. My daughter's company has over 40 15" 2018 MBPs and has had zero keyboard issues. Two systems died, one from water and one from a fall from a balcony.

Maybe good or bad batches, usage patterns, or ???
I have a feeling its more usage patterns, these keys don't last long under a gaming load.

Maybe. I don't game on laptops, and actually would never game on a MacBook. If I did game on a notebook I would get a System running windows, with a beefy GPU, big fans, and a nice thick keyboard to handle the pounding.

I wonder why people are posting saying that there is no widespread keyboard issue and that it's just a vocal few people who have the problem ?
A lot of people probably don't report failures, or they don't have the time to get their keyboards fixed. I also hate that Apple always says "A small number" or "a very small number" when they put out a repair program, even though it's not a small number. There's plenty of people that I know who have dealt with butterfly keyboard failures.

I suspect a combination of high heat and hitting the keys hard. May make those metal parts bend in the switch. Might explain multiple failures by same people, none from others.

FYI, I've been using my 2016 pre-order MBP every day since getting it, and have had no keyboard problem. Our lab of 11 similar units have no problems (a couple people use external keyboards).

no idea, but everytime I went to the Apple store to get my 15" mbp to get repaired the apple employees always talked abut how the keyboard issue is one of the most common problems that customers come in with.

Probably because it depends on your perspective...

Let's say the keyboard failure rate is 5% to 10%, which would be 2 to 4-times greater than the previous generation (according to the AppleInsider data). If, say, 10 million butterfly keyboards were sold in the past year, that would be 500,000 to 1 Million keyboard repairs. A lot as an absolute number.

But, the overall reliability of 2016+ MBP's, doesn't seem to have gotten any worse, maybe even better, according to multiple data sources (IBM reliability data, Consumer Reports, Apple Insider, Apple's response, etc.) So the overall quality of the laptops may have improved, while this one aspect has worsened.

So in one sense it's a widespread problem, but from another prospective, it melds into the overall reliability without moving the needle much, and thus a relatively minor issue.

Remember the most reliable laptops in the past (Apple), still had a 10% repair-rate in the first two years. If most of those 10% were a single-issue, it would become high-profile -- like the keyboards. When it is dispersed over multiple issues, nothing stands out.

Sounds reasonable. I use my 2018 for regular office work and programming and have experienced no issues with the keyboard.

Oh, ****. My 2018 MBP has started to have the repeating keys issue. As of about 2 days ago. Holy **********ing ****. So my unit now has both the T2 crash happening every 4-6 days WITHOUT FAIL, and now also the repeating keys issue.

Is the 2019 model known to have the infamous keyboard problems yet? I guess it is, because Apple added it to the Keyboard Service Program since the day it went on sale.

you've had 7 keyboard replacements?
No, I . have had 7 or 8 new 2018 MBP computers. This current one I have had since Jan. and in May I started to get the dreaded repeat keys, took it in and had a top case replacement repair, then a couple of weeks later the keys were repeating again, took it in and then told mee they would reeplace the impacted keys. Went back today and was told that I would have to wait as theye didn't have the parts in stock for another topcase repair. Again, they are telling me that that they won't use the 2019 topcase as it is a different part number. I asked for a new computer, a 2019 with . the new keyboard and they refused. I . was told to call Apple Customer Support. I came home and wasted 3+ hours talking to two different people all with no solution other than another repair, um bandaid. I have escalated and am supposed to hear back tomorrow, but my hopes are not high. I told them I would be veery happy with another reepair if they will usee thee 2019 topcase/keyboard, or another swap for a 2019.

I will report back, but my guess is that I am told I will just need tto keep repairing the machinee - Who carees aboutt lack of productivity, righ apple?

Pleas pardon typos - Typing on a MBP

i sent an email to tim cook not expecting anything but received a call a few days after from someone that checks his email. She was a senior advisor and i had her look into replacing my 2016 with a 2019 model. It took her a few days but she agreed to replacing the machine. I finished my 3rd repair and had scheduled a 4th but they swap it before that repair.

Well i have some potentially bad news: I don't think The 2019 keyboards still don't completely fix the duplicate keypress issues because I've occasionally gotten a few duplicate E's.
Good news is that the keyboards still are more reliable than the 2018s, as 3 weeks in on a 2018 would have had a completely busted key for me. I'm going to wait to send this in because it's only happened a couple of times and could be within margin of error.
EDIT: getting a few more duplicates after testing, press F to pay respects to the first reported 2019 keyboard failure.

All Apple has to do is increase the key travel to the pre-butterfly keys or slightly less and all this duplicate keypress and dead feel to the keys will be eliminated.

I think everyone loves the butterfly keys stability and size, just the keystroke travel is too little and that fixing it requires a whole top case change and not individual keys.

After repeated problems with my 2018, it was swapped for 2019 last week. The replacement was slightly under spec from my last model and not a like for like replacement as me and phone support agreed however the store was rude and refused, the store person told me I could escalate the issue so I did. I sent an email to Tim Cook, explaining the situation, case number and that the store, nor AppleCare could help but they told me to escalate, so I'm emailing you etc.

I got a call back 2 days later from an executive liaison, he is looking into my case and will get back to me, since dealing with him my new replacement has experienced kernel issues which have been documented via a new Genius Bar appointment along with a few other issues it has had in just a week. While at the DIFFERENT store they understood the replacement was not the same spec as my original model and couldn't understand the problem. They were due to replace it when the saw the executive Liaison person's name attached to the case. They kinda got stage fright, they said it is best to leave it with him.

He was due to call back latest today, however they are shut now and no call.

Partly wondering if I should just hit them up for refund and wait for September.

I did the same last Oct. for one of my failed computers - I got Austin and they went through all sorts of testing with me and finally sent me a new machine in Jan - This current failing machine, which is number 7 or 8. So unbelievable I think I might be on a hidden cameera show. Anyway, I contacted him again and he has not beeen helpful - I may try again. I am, now, waiting to hear back from Apple and don't expect any resoluttion.

My 2018 keyboard's double letters issue is gettting worse every day (look, it just happened now with my 'T' key!), so now that I have BOTH the T2 crash (which just happened when powering on my laptop only 30 minutes ago) AND this unacceptable keyboard issue (clearly not fixed in the 2018 model, and I also had my A key start failing some weeks ago), this is just becoming too faulty to use as a machine (which I paid $5300 for).

It has given me no choice but to get a refund for my 2018 machine (using my rights under consumer law, if necessary), and buy a 2019 model as a replacement.

Un-****in-believable.

Just out of curiosity, what did you email Tim Cook exactly?

That ive had 2 motherboard replacement and going in for my second keyboard replacement in less than 6 months. Brought up the 4 repair junk out policy ive had happen in the past with electronics and said that the 2019's came out with an update to the keyboard and that i dont want to keep replacing the machine with a faulty 2017 keyboard that is known for issues. Basically along those lines. I was about to take in the machine for the second repair and had a senior advisor call me because of the email and discussed options after she looked into it more.
