Not that I would consider a GM car anyway -- my only GM cars were hand me downs from my father (when I was in college) in the 1960s-1970s -- but I would not buy or lease any car without CarPlay. I have bought Hondas/Acuras since 1991, but I wrote to Acura around 2010 and said that my next car would have CarPlay whether it was an Acura product or not. I doubt my letter influenced them, but by the time I bought my next Acura, it had CarPlay.

Wow. That is dumb. People want options and this is an anti consumer move. GM just wants to try and sell you services. To each their own, but I wouldn’t buy a car without car play. I’m driving a Mach E with Car Play and it integrates really well with the vehicle.

Amazing how a single decision by a bad executive who shouldn’t have their job can spell disaster for a good chunk of the American auto industry.

Idiocy. This will likely be reversed, but there will be significant damage done to a key American industry and its worker base in the process.

Hard to imagine a company being so messed-up in the executive suite to approve a boneheaded move like this. Their competitors, especially the Japanese brands, will be laughing all the way to the bank.

More proof that our data is the most valuable commodity. I can assume there will be a hack quite quickly but in a world where everyone is connected to their device, it seems they will be targeting the 60+ crowd only

I would never buy a car without CarPlay it is quite essential for my daily use.
I find this kind of remark odd. There are so many other things that I'd put ahead of Carplay in my must haves that makes Phone integration pale into insignificance.
All I need from phone is ability to connect via bluetooth and take calls. In both of my vehicles my music is plugged in, (SD card on one and USB stick on the other).
Things like heated screen are WAAAAAAAAAYYYY more important than CarPlay.

Won't buy a GM car due to this. It is really stupid, I think, to be restrictive. I wonder how long it will take someone to invent a device that converts/links 1 to the other.
Another reason not to do much with Google also

This is so stupid. They should embrace flexibility in EVs like Ford does with the eVs and offering wireless CarPlay alongside their home brew navigation apps customized for EVs. Win people over to use your application by offering EV specific advantages over CarPlay (like EV charging range and supercharging stops).

Don’t just force people to not be able to use CarPlay. I literally didn’t buy a Tesla and went with ford for that reason.

They are necessary solutions to somewhat future-proof your expensive vehicle. When I turn on my car, the nearly-useless manufacturer UI appears. One click and the latest iOS 16 interface appears.

The vast majority of manufacturers will not update their software apart from defects for the life of your vehicle. They already made the sale, so there is no motivation!

I was thrilled when iPhone hit the scene and I got to say goodbye to awful carrier UI's. The AT&T badge was in the top corner of the screen, but they had no input on how I could use my phone or their network.
You don't know how bad QNX is to develop on.... Dealers also deal with a ton of CarPlay and AA questions and troubleshooting... It's a complete waste of their time.

You, like most everyone have already decided what's ahead is bad! It isn't... It's better than CarPlay, which isn't hard.

Google is going to become the defacto software partner for most automakers. I know of two others that will likely announce something similar later this year. Apple simply isn't set up for this sort of thing, the lack of freedom is the death knell for their aspirations.

However, Google is much more open to supporting apple than the other way around. Perhaps they will develop a way for CarPlay to work without hardware or any liability for the automaker to support.

We're in the infancy of auto infotainment... What we have today is garbage compared to whats coming.

You must be a bit old school then. Wireless CarPlay is a game changer. Having the music, navigation, messaging and phone calls all integrated into one UI is fantastic. CarPlay trumps any other manufacturer’s solutions.

Infotainment in general is a huge factor when buyers are considering a new car, particularly because that’s what most people interact with aside from actually driving the car itself.

While it’s certainly not the only factor or even the highest factor when considering what car to buy, assuming you are comparing like for like vehicles (such as a GM EV vs a Ford EV of the same class, similar in size, price, styling, etc). If one offers CarPlay and the other doesn’t, better believe I’m going with the CarPlay solution.

Using Siri voice control is fantastic too. If anything, manufacturers should partner with apple to be able to leverage siri and voice control to manage vehicle specific settings or details outside of CarPlay (like HVAC, heated / ventilated seats, etc).

Also, what’s a heated screen? Lol

Car manufacturers don't understand customers.
They think it's the engines, the performance, the suspension that count.
Nope.
I remember the salesman's face when I said that the main criterion for me is CarPlay and a good place for cups.

"...help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive..."
big brother strikes again
consumers should be given flexibility on software compatibility
hate it when auto companies mandate you use thier own software

Google’s car operating system is very good. See the Pole Star and the new Renault Megane etech.

Both of those cars also feature android auto and CarPlay running along side google’s car OS.

this looks like an unnecessary and short sighted move, which limits consumer choice.

I always thought it was a bit silly for why Apple would consider making a car, but in a world where EV manufacturers seem to want to cut apple out of infotainment, there would certainly be a market for apple infotainment / tech EV vehicles.

This is stupid as hell. Granted, I have no plans to purchase a GM product, but they're alienating many people with this decision. I love my Tesla but the lack of CarPlay is infuriating at times.

If the Macan EV has a decent range and now that the supercharger network is being opened up, I'll opt for the Porsche as my next vehicle.
