They want to monetize their drivers...great!

"honey, why are we getting all these no-tell-motel ads on our car/phone/desktop?"
"gee, I don't know."
Honey why is the car advertising condoms and lube?
.....my brother drove the car the other day, it was his personalized ads!
Doesn't he live in Bhutan?
......maaaaaaybe......

This is making me question my Blazer EV reservation. I've wanted an EV for a while. I've considered a Tesla, but the lack of CarPlay and local service centres discouraged me from them, even though they have the best charging network.

With GM doing this, I may have to look at the Mustang Mach-E again, or even the Ioniq5.

Those that LOVE the Cadillac's will still continue to purchase those. But yes, they will be back in about 2 years. I have never bought a GM and my lease is up in December. I will not be looking at them for sure.

Shots fired! One of the barriers in the iPhone's development was Verizon's unwillingness to become a "dumb pipe" and simply sell phone plans to customers, and allow Apple to sell their own hardware and software. AT&T let Apple sell their own hardware and software, and so AT&T became the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the U.S. for the first 3½ years (2007-2011).

According to this article, General Motors wants their customers to enjoy their exclusive hardware and software "experience", and let Apple be the "dumb pipe" for once! 🤣

ICE unequivocally does need to go, but it will take many years before full EV support infrastructure is built out, just like it took many decades to build out the current system of gas/diesel delivery and storage.

We could be reusing the current gas/diesel infrastructure for bio fuels and hydrogen (for hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen ICE)...

*Could* be..

ICE itself isn't *evil*, emissions from otherwise sequestered carbon from fossil fuels is the primary concern. Bio Fuel ICE and Hydrogen ICE /Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered tech would allow the reuse of a lot of existing infrastructure...

sigh.

EV’s are not the best way forward, but they are trendy. Wait for the mines and battery disposal galore

This will be a decision that might end up in college textbooks someday. Only completely out of touch executives would make such a short-sighted, idiotic decision. I didn't read the full article so maybe there's a redeeming component here but it sounds to me like some folks just signed up to get severance checks in a couple of years.

With all else on this - gee I want GM and Google to have more information about where I go and what I do.

Trouble is, I don't trust General Motors to build the hardware/software experience for automotive infotainment. Scratch GM off the list of potential car buys in the future.

I would say this will stop me from buying another GM, but the truth is I decided that some time ago when it took almost ten years for the local dealer to figure out what had been wrong with my car since I purchased it.

I liked the two Hyundais I've had since quite a bit. Maybe not quite so much, but there's been so much less stress.

I get that, capitalism will always find a way to eke out more for what was previously just part of the deal.

What I don’t get is removing one of the most popular things that *regular people* (aka not techies, and not car junkies) care about when buying (after the size/cost of what your looking for has been determined).

1. Is the seat comfy?
2. Cup holder access
3. My tunes bro!

Disappointing isn't it?

To your points there..

1. Seat heat subs are already a thing (diff than "comfy", I get that)
2. Agree
3. Wait until there's no Aux input and they lock Bluetooth behind a sub

This trend is awful and it's just getting started
We must fight it now, or it will bite all users preferences eventually

I think the difference is (especially now that Tesla has Apple Music integration) that Teslas/Rivians have intuitive UI.

GM has decades of horrible UI that was "saved" by CarPlay. Now they're throwing that out, no one can be sure if they can be trusted to deliver a comparable experience.
Agreed. My post was mainly trying to say that you don't necessarily NEED CarPlay although it's a nice standard. If you can create a decent UI then it's fine, but if it's going back to the days of 2010 where it was VERY obvious phones were outclassing any infotainment system, then they will fail. They need to hire some top talent though if they want to compete with better companies.

Just got my first vehicle with CarPlay and it's way better than any other car software I've used. From a pure user experience standpoint, going full Google seems like an obviously bad idea. What does Apple charge automakers for CarPlay?

There was a car industry survey recently, and executives expect Apple to have a car by 2026...

Google is paying GM for exclusivity in their data gathering. Google wants to know where you’re going.

General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).

CarPlay-Phone-Call.jpg

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC in the United States. It will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, which goes on sale this summer. The company plans to continue offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its combustion models, which are expected to be phased out by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. Owners of existing GM cars that currently have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be able to continue using the systems.

GM has worked on infotainment software with Google since 2019 that tightly integrates with other vehicle systems such as navigation and GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. Future GM infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify and Audible, and iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth. EV buyers will also get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no extra cost for a period of eight years.

The move is expected to help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive and accelerate a strategy to incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services. Notably, GM was not included in Apple's list of automakers that plan to offer the next-generation CarPlay experience.

How is this any different from Apple app store argument?
