Not sure why everyone is getting upset about losing CarPlay. I have 2 cars a 2020 Mercedes GLC without CarPlay and an older Honda CRV with an aftermarket CarPlay unit installed. I use the same three features on both cars. Music, Maps, phone calls and don't really need anything else. I never use SIRI and would not miss CarPlay.

It seems any system a car company chooses is outdated by the time the car comes out. I just go with bluethooth
That is the problem; a while back there was a company trying to pursue an open standard called OpenCar that would standardize everything across the different car companies; all of their demos featured Mazda so I was really hoping that Mazda was going to switch to using it because it would have allowed tech savvy people to write their own GUI apps. Writing was very similar to HTML/CSS/Javascript.

Looks like they are still around; but I do not know of any car manfucaturer using it.

It was a real shame it never took off.

General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC in the United States. It will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, which goes on sale this summer. The company plans to continue offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its combustion models, which are expected to be phased out by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. Owners of existing GM cars that currently have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be able to continue using the systems.

GM has worked on infotainment software with Google since 2019 that tightly integrates with other vehicle systems such as navigation and GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. Future GM infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify and Audible, and iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth. EV buyers will also get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no extra cost for a period of eight years.

The move is expected to help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive and accelerate a strategy to incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services. Notably, GM was not included in Apple's list of automakers that plan to offer the next-generation CarPlay experience.

For my last three cars, I haven't even considered one without CarPlay support. But I haven't considered a GM, either, so I guess this doesn't really affect me.

Moot since cars are insanely expensive now. I’ll never understand why an iPad mini with LTE has 10x the functionality of a car infotainment system at 1/3 the price. I feel like cars are beyond gouge now from every angle.

Is this a leaked April Fools Joke?? 😂

I.... I just cant imagine I have just been through 9 pages and not a single person has mentioned the impending April Fools Day joke here......

I don’t think ICE is going anywhere. The market will dictate what happens. Companies and governments can try and strong arm the market for their own agenda, but they’re going to follow the money ultimately. We’ll see what consumers want.

I, for one, have no plans to buy an EV and am thankful we have level headed companies like Toyota not putting all their eggs in the EV basket. Consumer choice! If the market isn’t choosing EV’s when 2035 rolls around you’d better bet Chevy is still going to be pumping out ICE vehicles. Only time will tell.
ICE unequivocally does need to go, but it will take many years before full EV support infrastructure is built out, just like it took many decades to build out the current system of gas/diesel delivery and storage.

They wouldn't need to move to a "built-in" system to do that. BMW had initially been charging a subscription fee for CarPlay but stopped doing so after customer backlash.
Really?! Wow. Yeah it's a slippery slope. First it'll be subscription based GPS/navigation, then subscription based remote access or emergency unlocking, then subscription based... I dunno climate control, active suspension. If they can get people acclimated to paying forever for something they purchased, they won't stop, and within a generation of buyers, it'll be normalized to pay forever for each feature. I wonder what the additional cost/loss is for re-sell on subscription featured cars. Can't be good.

Because you’re supposed to be driving the car and paying attention to that.

Any persuasion of GM vehicles have been struck off of my list of considerations for a long while now, but this definitely cements that fact. It’s also one of the reasons I have no interest in a Tesla.

Omitting CarPlay makes it a nonstarter for me. Especially since it’s getting more and more difficult to swap in aftermarket systems since everyone just wants to go for the iPad attached to the dashboard look.

Tesla's inventory fluctuates (they also don't post all of their inventories online) but they currently show thousands of new vehicles available. Model 3s, Model Ys, Model Ss and Model Xs are all available for quick deliveries.

Tesla dramatically cut prices at the beginning of the year, ticking off a lot of customers who bought last year, because they saw their inventories increasing and used price cuts to try to boost demand.
where are you seeing thousands of new vehicles.

perhaps, but they also factor in the new EV credit locks out at 55k, hence why they aggressively priced the 3 and y to just below that price point. i was hit by that price cut since i took delivery of my model y in dec 29. so i followed that situation pretty intensively on reddit. my only silver lining is i won't qualify for the new 2023 ev credit guideline.

Note to self...never buy another GM car. My wife has a Volvo XC40 Recharge with the Google "infotainment" software. It is the worst interface I have ever seen. And it doesn't have the advantages that CarPlay offers. Thankfully we leased that car and will turn it back in soon so we never have to deal with that crap again.

I won't be buying a GM vehicle then...

There is literally no reason to not give BUYERS the choice of using CarPlay or the default infotainment system in their vehicles.
Yes there is: maximizing revenue by selling as subscription what's free now, and selling user data.

Well, I think a lot people are going to be sad when every automaker goes this route. I wouldn't be surprised to see both CarPlay and Android Auto disappear or basically get deprecated in the next 5 years.

This gets GM away from Blackberry QNX, which pretty much everyone uses now. There are also hardware components required for CarPlay and Android Auto.

Who knows, maybe Google will make something to allow CarPlay to work, and it would remove GM having to support an outside piece of software.

GM, explain to me how you are going to be able to collect data on me and drain subscription fees from my bank account when I just refuse to purchase your product? (No CarPlay, no sale). This reminds me of comic sketch I saw on Johnny Carson (yeah I am that old)...the comedian lamented how expensive having a home telephone was getting...you were actually charged extra to NOT have your number listed in the phone book, which prompted the comedian to wonder how much extra it would cost to not have a phone at all?

For those commenting about Tesla not having Apple CarPlay...I have a Tesla Model 3, but will be moving to a new EV in 2024. The lack of Apple CarPlay in my Tesla is huge in this decision! Everyone may think Tesla has their act together on their car OS, but use it for more than a week and the cracks show up quickly. The wiper, lighting, and AC/Heat controls are great while stationary, but are a real pain to use while driving. Tesla's native voice control feature make Siri seem amazing (and that takes some doing). Charging and range estimates are very hit or miss, even using cruise control. The navigation on the Tesla is OK at best (forget about it helping you by recommending alternate routes because of traffic). The audio controls are simply terrible. The Spotify app is very buggy and inconsistent (playlists just stop playing and force you to restart them - it cannot remember that you want random play - when not in random play mode it skips over songs in a playlist - ironically it seems to be the same artists all of the time...hmmm...why do you not like Van Halen and Queen). The Apple Music app just came to Tesla about 3-6 months ago. To its credit it is much better than the Spotify app. I now almost exclusively listen to App Music in the car over Spotify...this has carried over at home so why do I need Spotify?

The above may make you think I hate my Tesla... I do not, but it is not perfect and a lot of it worts would be either mitigated or lessened by allowing me to leverage Apple CarPlay to replace out various Tesla software. I am leasing this car so I am not willing to add a 3rd-party Apple CarPlay screen to the vehicle (there are some pretty nice options available too). Because of vehicle lead times, I have already started my search for its replacement in 2024...GM is now off that list. No CarPlay, no sale.
