The thing is, nobody wants a Facebook phone. And I take it nobody wants a Facebook car either.

Though I think this sets kind of a scary precedent. Once other auto manufacturers see this they may decide to pull CarPlay support as well. The banks are also already getting sick of Apple Pay, and may decide to pull out of that too. And one by one the domino falls,....I don't like where this is headed.
The problem with the Facebook phone was this was early 2010s. Android was a laggy mess. Even with all the UI optimizations, it really took til 2019 or so (think like Pixel 4 or later) before lag really went away. The experience on Android was just really bad early on and people really used Android because they were cheaper alternatives to iPhones. A Facebook phone, if made well could've done decently, but it was a product that got abandoned fast.

On top of that it was a budget phone, not a flagship like the HTC One, and it was clearly relegated to being a secondary product. AT&T exclusive also doesn't help when you had 5 years of AT&T exclusive iPhone users.

Well that's a shame. I reserved a spot to order a silverado EV the moment the orders went up (not that this necessarily means anything lol). I am thinking by the time they push the WT model they'll have killed off carplay. I guess I won't judge until I see it. Tesla has done a great job (though I wish I had carplay there too).

CarPlay that good eh? Interesting responses from those who say they will not buy a car without CarPlay. Hmm. I guess this is one area that I'm not that digitally invested. As long as my car can accept bluetooth connection to the iPhone to play through audio, and allows me to rewind, fast forward, and play/pause, the iPhone remotely, I'm good. My Ford Fiesta allows for all of that without any fancy CarPlay :)
have you ever driven a car with CarPlay for an extended period of time (few weeks at least)? I was happy with BT connectivity in my various Toyota models over the past 10 or os year, but now that I have a Bolt EUV since last November, my user experience is vastly improved

and auto industry doesn't understand what the user experience of today's phone means to the the phone user (who is their customer)
Car people laugh at it like it doesn’t matter, but when you don’t actually care about the car culture, things like phone connections and whether a seat is actually comfortable really are make or break for many car buyers.

An iPhone user is probably the target demo for an EV. Quite a gamble to be dismissing 1B+ potential customers. By 2035, this number will probably be 2B+. This probably is about control of data and the market as a whole, or GM is concerned about Apple possibly entering the EV market by 2035. But nothing is stopping Google from entering it at some point either.

I’m guessing a revenue sharing deal is behind the scenes here for data. Something Apple would just dismiss out of hand.

This thread is getting a lot of action! I've never owned a car with any smart software, I just connect my iPhone to bluetooth audio. I'm really surprised to see so many people refuse to buy a car without CarPlay, but I guess I don't know what I'm missing out on. 😅
didn't really care for CarPlay until I rented a car with CarPlay. it makes the whole experience so much better.

As I’ve invested in the Apple ecosystem, this decision by GM removes them from consideration for my next car purchase. Hopefully they’ll course-correct before then.

I have CarPlay (now wireless CarPlay) on my Toyota, and my old BMW is still BT. I actually don't mind not having CarPlay, but the phone holder is annoying because it tends to fall off after a few weeks. I'd prefer a CarPlay car, but I'm not sure if not having it would be a deal breaker.

OTOH, a google-monetized car? Nope.

Is this really surprising? Consumers generally prefer to have choices, companies prefer lock-in. Apple, unsurprisingly, wants to own your whole dashboard (https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/13/next-generation-carplay-automakers/) and some car makers will see opportunity there (iPhone being a near-monopoly) and collaborate. Other companies calculate they can create their own lock-in without Apple. I have to imagine no carmaker is going to build a car that can only be used by owners of one kind of phone or another.

Likely soon after, there will be a rise in 3rd party after market CarPlay compatible items being sold.

Man this is right up there with Ford allowing cars to self repossess. I mean I get it, people need to pay their payment, but I'd rather not have cars driving themselves, and/or big brother"ing" me by saying, no you can't start your car until you phone in your payment...I don't care that you're being chased by a guy with a machete!

The majority of car companies have added support for ACP and AA over the years due to demand, I can't help but ask where is their logic and are they really listening to the customers. Good luck GM, this will seal the deal that I won't be buying one in the future.

I’m shocked that my dad has been asking me for a flash drive so he can update my mom’s 2020 Subaru’s “iPad” (what she calls the center council screen).
That’s funny. I had a 2008 Ford Explore, with GPS, and found in The settings the “update maps“ button, I was like cool I didn’t know you could do that, pushed the button and the screen tilted back a bit, exposing another dvd slot and a navigation DVD popped out. I had to buy a new updated navigation dvd, and it has to stay in the car for it to work. $600 for an updated version!!

Manufacturer's infotainment systems suck for the most part. Especially the GPS portion. This isn't something minor as they probably expect. GM's shares are going to drop.

The only US automakers of any relevance are Ford and Tesla especially going forward. I could care less about GM the only thing I would ever want from them is a C8 corvette and only if someone bought one for me. Not having car play on a GM vehicle is irrelevant as I would never even consider a GM or Chrysler vehicle due to reliabilty. Not having CarPlay is the least of your worries if the car won't even run reliably.

If I ever needed more reason to not buy GM and stick with Honda.... I have it now.
Honda going in a different direction as well it appears. The new 2023 models at the top tiers are exclusively hybrid with the touring model utilizing Google software for the infotainment center. You can still use CarPlay for now though. Google apparently making deals behind the scenes.

The thing that really irks me is that the “subscription for features” paradigm is a one way street. First you normalize it for luxury add-ons, then 5 years down the road it’s normalized for basic features from day one.

Because that’s a potential revenue stream, it WILL happen. The laws of quarter to quarter economic growth requires it at the end of the day.
Yeah, you’re not wrong. different statement for a different topic, but I’m all for a steady state economy.

Self driving cars are always 20yrs away. Snark aside, it’s improbable that self driving cars will ever be viable and safe on roadways that still have human drivers.

And the blame for all this subscription stuff I rest squarely on the shoulders of BMW.
