I know so many people who have Iphones and cars with Carplay and don't even know it exists or how to use it. I think most people on this site overvalue the use of Carplay and Android Auto for the general populace.

Have you all heard about April 1 fools day pranks? Do you think any company would be this short sited?

whatever executive that decided on this should just not work with consumer facing products. This will definitely make be reconsider even looking at any GM vehicle.

"Twenty-three percent of new car buyers in the U.S. say they “must have” CarPlay and 56% percent are “interested” in having CarPlay when buying a new vehicle, according to a 2017 Strategy Analytics study."

That study was 6 years ago. I can only imagine those numbers have increased.

General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC in the United States. It will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, which goes on sale this summer. The company plans to continue offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its combustion models, which are expected to be phased out by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. Owners of existing GM cars that currently have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be able to continue using the systems.

GM has worked on infotainment software with Google since 2019 that tightly integrates with other vehicle systems such as navigation and GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. Future GM infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify and Audible, and iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth. EV buyers will also get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no extra cost for a period of eight years.

The move is expected to help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive and accelerate a strategy to incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services. Notably, GM was not included in Apple's list of automakers that plan to offer the next-generation CarPlay experience.

What! …. No carplay no sale.

That's true, but from my personal experience once you introduce it to them it becomes an everyday feature. CarPlay and Android Auto are just so much better than the vast majority of infotainment systems.

Bad enough they went proprietary on this, but partnering with Google? I’ve been willing to look at companies I haven’t purchased from before when considering an EV, but one by one they keep disqualifying themselves…

Or literally almost any other manufacturer over GM. I think they grossly underestimate how many people consider CarPlay an absolute. Not that I ever wanted or considered any GM vehicle.
The big issue: here in North America, iPhones have a massive marketshare. GM cutting them off by stopping the use of Apple CarPlay will tremendously hurt car sales, especially among more well-educated car owners.

unbelievably stupid decision. I have multiple GM vehicles and will not buy another one if it doesn’t have CarPlay. Just look at car companies’ own nav systems and interfaces. Archaic.

Years ago when shopping for a vehicle, I was looking at the Toyota Highlander, and at the time toyota did not offer CarPlay, only if they’re on interface. I told the sales person that was a dealbreaker, and he couldn’t understand why I thought that way. Toyota held out as long as they could, but had to eventually offer CarPlay because that’s what customers want.

GM will regret this decision.

I bought a 2023 Volvo XC60 B5 AWD Ultimate 2 weeks ago. It has a Google based infotainment system and still has Apple CarPlay. GM can (and should) add it to theirs as well!

It also eliminates Android Auto. No projection systems at all. That’s cutting off 100% of the mobile phone market share added to iPhones.

I can't be bothered looking up the details but they've moved to a 3rd party android system haven't they?
I suspect Android Auto functionality will be replicated - perhaps user data synchronised. I can't think of a good reason GM would want to do this other than a push from their system developer.

Android Automotive. Terrible naming, I know, but it’s different. Sure, it’ll have Google Maps and other Google services… but pay walled behind a monthly subscription - versus free for Android Auto.

I recently left my house late at night for an urgent errand and accidentally forgot my iPhone. I thought I would be gone only a few minutes, so I wasn't concerned. Unfortunately, I ended up needing to drive to a location 30 miles away.

Without CarPlay, I missed an exit and had to backtrack, driving on unfamiliar roads. The entire time, I had to suffer with FM radio, which is nothing but commercials interrupted by a few songs each hour. The car got me where I needed to go safely, but not without inconvenience and miserable entertainment.

CarPlay or no sale, GM!

This is supremely stupid. I wouldn’t buy a car without CarPlay these days. I like the Bolt EV/EUV, but it’s immediately off my list without CarPlay.

That’s also probably the worst part of Tesla, too (aside from the build quality).

I hadn't heard Honda was doing this. Just looked - the 2023 Accord does come with the Google built-in crap, but it does include CarPlay across all trims. No mention of Android Auto, though.

The whole Google built-in concept is my bigger concern. Too much control over the vehicle and control systems to a company not known for sticking with the applications and well known for aggressive data collection.
My 2022 CR-V has a Google based Infotainment system that can run either Android Auto or CarPlay on top of it.
