General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).
I wonder if GM forgets that those options have legions of users, going the other route won't buy them many looks though the sales windows.

this might be the stupidest business decision I've heard in a while... I can only imagine they are making this move so they can offer their own subscription based infotainment service.
Yeah, my Nissan keeps trying to get me to sign up for Nissan Connect. But it also has Airplay, so I just use that. The only thing I miss out on is my car can't send me emails telling me to get an oil change at my Nissan dealership.

Nissan keeps threatening that they're going to stop making the Maxima. If the newest Maximas are still less than 4 years old when I'm ready to buy a new car, then I'll get another Maxima. If they're older than 4 years old or the new ones don't have Carplay, then it just may be time for me to have an affair with a different automaker, lol!

Oh and it won't be GM, either. GM is a high-maintenance date with uneven implants, a lot of loose screws, expensive tastes, and too much tacky chrome dental work. At this point, Carplay ain't gonna save GM anyhow. But be on your guard and don't let those politicians reach in your pocket to save GM for a second time so early in this new millennia.

I just do not like the idea to buy a premium car by Audi or BMW and than that car gets spoiled by software from Google or Apple.

Some people even want professional cameras to run with Android, because than you could use all those photo editing apps directly at your camera our post your photo on Instagram directly from your camera. For me that is quite a horror though. I fear that will happen one day.

I don't see that. What people want is access to services in their vehicle and given how connected these now are the CarPlay model is dying. Hence why Apple announced the new generation of CarPlay which is essentially this, built into the car, but produced by Apple.

The problem Apple has is that, in all honesty, Apple's services aren't up to much. And the key service in cars is maps. Given the choice of Google Maps or Apple Maps most people would go with Google which is why you will see more car manufactures opting to go with Google to power their infotainment systems.

It started with Volvo and Polestar moving to Google, now it's GM. Apple are going to have work on their hands to convince car manufactures to install their software in their cars.

My 2023 Volvo XC60 has a Google based infotainment system and has CarPlay. They had to add it months after they made the switch because so many customers complained.

I have a 2014 Silverado LTZ which just hit 70k miles. I love this truck, treat is with great care and have no immediate plans to get rid of it. The 2014 did not come with Car Play, (started in 2016) but I added it in 2020 by upgrading the radio, with a 2020 version of the GM radio for $600 and the install was super easy. That is how much I care and want Car Play.

I just looked at the 2023 model on Chevy's website (Silverado 1500 LTZ) and they have already moved to this new Google setup.

Scrolling down you get to this...

When the time comes to replace my truck, I will not buy a GM if Car Play is not an option. Maybe a Tundra or even possibly a Ridge Line...which is sort of a truck.

where are you seeing thousands of new vehicles.

There are a few independent website that track Tesla's posted online inventory.

Also, as I mentioned, Tesla doesn't post its entire inventory online. This is why you can frequently see "custom orders" being delivered quickly because Tesla is able to match the order to a new existing inventory car at one of the factories or stores.

This is why they're doing it. Not because it is a better user experience, but because they will make more money through a) forcing car owners to subscribe to their proprietary services and b) selling data about the users.

No thank you.
They won’t though, because they’ll sell many fewer cars. They must not have done their market research. Someone at GM is underestimating how attached people are to their phones..

Keep in mind people, and plenty of Apple and Google engineers bought Teslas and Rivians despite them having no CarPlay.

Maybe it's not as important as people think? If you put together a decent system to let me listen to music or navigate, I can somewhat be placated. With that said most car infotainment systems looked like absolute ass in the 2000s/2010s. The Toyota one even in 202x cars is still an eyesore from a 10+ year old system that looks and functions like crap.
Regardless they won’t update as frequently or as thoroughly to support new iOS features. It’s a dealbreaker for me. I never knew Tesla didn’t support CarPlay either. I only buy Toyotas.

This is a totally stupid decision from my favorite car manufacturer. There is absolutely zero reason to do it except greed. They want to take out the cell phone services so they can sell you access to apps. Volvo uses the exact same google software in their cars and they still offer android audio and CarPlay.

Greed is certainly a destructive attitude, but it doesn't work in a free market. Company's sales suffer when they charge too much or offer too little. GM can "greed" all they want. Good luck with that.

So... going two steps backward? Seriously, this is pre-CarPlay/Android Auto where they had their own standard.

Got it, do not buy GM cars (already done).

EDIT (Adding): I know for a fact that my wife's 2017 CR-V uses Android in the infotainment system, but it still integrates with CarPlay. Granted, the Android Auto also brings directions to the driver's info display. Still, it's a boneheaded justification for GM.

Not a smart move, GM. I grew up in a GM household. Dad worked for GM for 45 years. Currently I drive a 2003 Silverado 4x4, and a 2017 Volt, that works great with CarPlay. If I can still drive when it's time to replace the Volt, I will only replace the Volt with an EV that has CarPlay.
