Why are they going backwards? I wouldnt choose to drive a rental car if it didn’t have CarPlay. Turning that center console screen into an extension of your phone is useful. i would like to see how the deliberations of this went at whatever chump executive meeting this took place at

tesla is made in america they are doing just fine without apple carplay.
Are they? Tesla is slashing prices like crazy due to cratering demand. I personally wouldn't buy a Tesla at any price.

People spend way too much money on cars. I exclusively buy 5-10 year old used cars and just add an aftermarket CarPlay system. It works great and is way cheaper.

I guess they see tesla making it work and want control back. No thanks from me.
Drove a Tesla for 5 years. UI was very much inferior to CarPlay. Most Tesla drivers would like the option of having CarPlay&AA. Some (like me) choose another brand.

(CarPlay is not the only problem, lack of working service is also blocking using Tesla. This is unfortunate as the driving/battery/charging are great.)

Help me understand...

Why even turn on (and pay for) the Wifi hotspot when you have an iPhone?

Why not plug it in? Better charging. Better fidelity of music. Fewer failure points (things that can go wrong and your phone doesn't have to switch Wifi networks).

How often is your built-in nav updated? Does it provide real-time traffic? Siri integration?

Just curious...everyone's use case is different.
I *always* plug in so that it is charging and running maps.

CarPlay was a must in my previous Audi A4, but my Tesla integrates almost everything I need in its proprietary interface. It even grabs my calendar events and automatically routes to locations in my calendar when I get in the car. I wish it had native YouTube Music integration, but it works just fine streaming over Bluetooth.

I mean, Waze would be nice, but other than that, I don't miss CarPlay at all.

I get why they are doing this (not wanting to cede too much control to Apple) but it is a deal breaker for many consumers - myself included.

That said, the most this will affect me is with rental cars which are always some Chevy something or other. CarPlay has been a game changer with rental cars because of not needing to learn a new interface each time I have to travel for work.

Another reason Apple needs to offer a method to enable a phone mounted version of "CarPlay" mode directly on your iPhone. There is zero reason this should not be possible. Would expand CarPlay access to older vehicles that only have Bluetooth audio support or only 3.5mm support and expand future access to car makers who want to shut out their users.

As an aside, this will really suck for rental cars in 3-5+ years. Almost no way to entirely avoid GM products there all the time.

And this is why Apple is working on it's own car. Apple's vision for next gen CarPlay completely takes over the car's dashboard and infotainment, most car manufacturers won't be comfortable to give up so much control over their car.

Everyone here is saying that no CarPlay is a dealbreaker - and I'm definitely in the same boat. But I seriously doubt that the number of Apple enthusiasts who absolutely demand CarPlay or no sale, and would otherwise seriously consider a GM vehicle isn't enough to make even a tiny blip in their sales. Even Apple fans who like and use CarPlay are likely to live with its absence if the vehicle is otherwise the one they want. No vehicle is perfect, and everyone has things about their car that annoys them. And I suspect the vast majority of iPhone users either don't know about CarPlay, or don't care enough to make a purchase decision based on it.

It's too bad because I love my Volt, and was thinking the Bolt EUV might be a contender whenever it's time to replace my other EV. But no way if it no longer has CarPlay by that time.

Damn I'm in the information gathering stage for a new car I plan on buying at the end of the year and the Bolt EUV was at the top of my list. Honestly I didn't think something like CarPlay was going to be a dealbreaker for me, but the more I think about it the more I realize it is a must for me. Time to look into the Hyundai again...

Seems like greedy non-consumer friendly business practices to me.

I like how Volvo do this.
They offer a Google system as standard, but the option to use CarPlay (or Android) is there as well.

When the computers are integrated, the customer needs to be given a choice. This is not like the home, where you can equip it with your choice of macOS/iPadOS/Windows etc. computers.

American car makers continue their stupidity. In the seventies gave away manufacturing to the Japanese because they wanted to continue to sell junk and not invest in what people wanted—reliable cars. Now they are behind on EVs and think they can make up by nickel and dimeing. We'll see how that goes. And will Google stick with it? History says no.
