This article is about EVs though. Yes there's lots of cars and trucks with bad transmissions, but this conversation is about EVs which just don't usually have one.
I was making generalizations about Chevrolet as a whole. I don’t see why we’re splitting hairs over this.

General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC in the United States. It will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, which goes on sale this summer. The company plans to continue offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its combustion models, which are expected to be phased out by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. Owners of existing GM cars that currently have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be able to continue using the systems.

GM has worked on infotainment software with Google since 2019 that tightly integrates with other vehicle systems such as navigation and GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. Future GM infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify and Audible, and iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth. EV buyers will also get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no extra cost for a period of eight years.

The move is expected to help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive and accelerate a strategy to incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services. Notably, GM was not included in Apple's list of automakers that plan to offer the next-generation CarPlay experience.

I have owned GMC Yukon XLs and a Suburban, and am currently looking at new GMC pickups, waiting on EV choices. This announcement means I will buy no GMC EV model year later than 2023; ever.

Probably GMC saw how much money Google makes collecting individuals' personal data and selling it, and decided that they would sacrifice sales for a piece of the action. It makes me sick, and I likely will leave the brand after 30+ years.

Personally I might end up buying an older combustion model GMC with CarPlay available, but more likely is a brand shift. It is interesting how viscerally disconcerting that is to me after decades of GMC.

When gas/diesel ICE vehicles are no longer allowed on the road, I'm far more likely to convert my current car or an old sports car to EV, and equip them as I see fit?

As long as these companies don't manage to lobby our ability to perform our own conversions and build our own EVs and Hydrogen ICE vehicles out of existence at least...

SMFH.

Between self-driving crud and this tracking/subscription bull-butter... I'm done with new cars.
I don’t think ICE is going anywhere. The market will dictate what happens. Companies and governments can try and strong arm the market for their own agenda, but they’re going to follow the money ultimately. We’ll see what consumers want.

I, for one, have no plans to buy an EV and am thankful we have level headed companies like Toyota not putting all their eggs in the EV basket. Consumer choice! If the market isn’t choosing EV’s when 2035 rolls around you’d better bet Chevy is still going to be pumping out ICE vehicles. Only time will tell.

An obvious step towards subscription based car features. No thanks.

From a different perspective, by tearing down integrations with the things people actually want, GM isolates themselves even more, which makes it so much easier to out compete them. It's a pipe dream to think people want a less compatible vehicle and GM would become the technical hub of their lives.

they slashed prices due to biden's administration inability to set a targeted ev credit by certain deadline,

they only have 1 tesla model y long range available in their inventory, with delivery from 1-3 months. thats really good demand.

Tesla's inventory fluctuates (they also don't post all of their inventories online) but they currently show thousands of new vehicles available. Model 3s, Model Ys, Model Ss and Model Xs are all available for quick deliveries.

Tesla dramatically cut prices at the beginning of the year, ticking off a lot of customers who bought last year, because they saw their inventories increasing and used price cuts to try to boost demand.

Basically you need to have an Android phone for maximum full integration…….

No thanks. Not buying a product that was stolen. No car play, no dice.

Are they? Tesla is slashing prices like crazy due to cratering demand. I personally wouldn't buy a Tesla at any price.

People spend way too much money on cars. I exclusively buy 5-10 year old used cars and just add an aftermarket CarPlay system. It works great and is way cheaper.
Well said. :) Less debt, still gets you from point A to B.

this strategy worked for Tesla, because people were willing to accept it because of the supercharger network and other benefits but I'm not sure GM can expect to see a similar response. It does seem like a questionable decision. I look forward to the inevitable reversal and announcement of continued support until the new replacement is fully ready for primetime. I can easily imagine GM trying to charge an additional monthly or annual fee for CarPlay/AA support

I guess they see tesla making it work and want control back. No thanks from me.
I wouldn't say it's working. But, like some Apple products, even when they suck, people buy them. I like Telsa. But, the infotainment system is not good. Poorly placed controls and options.

Not saying CarPlay is the only way of going. But, I do think Tesla makes it work because people like Tesla. Not because it's better all the time. Basically, GM doesn't have the same brand power as Apple and Tesla.

What SENSE could this POSSIBLY make? It really can’t cost that much royalty (most likely one time fee) to apple for the CarPlay stack to be included. And their legacy systems can still run in the background AND offer additional content or features that they too can subject to subscription fees or one time fees.

Quite a regression IMHO

I would say it worked for Tesla for a while, in that they had a lead over Carplay and a better product at the time compared to regular OEM systems UI/UX. Today, Tesla really should just include CarPlay to add that feature set availability to Teslas.

This is why they're doing it. Not because it is a better user experience, but because they will make more money through a) forcing car owners to subscribe to their proprietary services and b) selling data about the users.

No thank you.

If only GM had some sort of... subscription service experience to learn from in the past... maybe one where people could call for help or something... so they could see how well (or not) that didn't.

Tune in next year when GM announces they're disabling the use of 3rd-party devices for GPS, music and even phone calls...

This makes sense to them because they want you paying for data subscriptions so your maps work. If you can just use Carplay (or Android Auto) 90% of people wouldn't bother with in-car data subscriptions.

I’m sure each dealer is different, but my family recently got a new vehicle and the dealer spent a bunch of time setting up Bluetooth and never once mentioned CarPlay to them. either they’re clueless or they are purposely not informing buyers.

I won't be buying a GM vehicle then...

There is literally no reason to not give BUYERS the choice of using CarPlay or the default infotainment system in their vehicles.
The reason must be that GMC wants part of the huge monetary amounts Google makes collecting and reselling individuals' personal data. I too will never buy such a GMC vehicle, and I have been GMC-loyal for decades.
