Are they? Tesla is slashing prices like crazy due to cratering demand. I personally wouldn't buy a Tesla at any price.

People spend way too much money on cars. I exclusively buy 5-10 year old used cars and just add an aftermarket CarPlay system. It works great and is way cheaper.
they slashed prices due to biden's administration inability to set a targeted ev credit by certain deadline,

they only have 1 tesla model y long range available in their inventory, with delivery from 1-3 months. thats really good demand.

tesla infotainment is quite good that i don't miss carplay on my previous ride.

What a dumb move. I am living without it in my 2016 Mazda, although there is a factory hardware/software upgrade to enable it; just isn't a priority for me right now. The Mazda infotainment interface isn't too bad.

But GM is going to suffer from this, even though I do not have any vehicles with CarPlay currently, anything brand new I get will need to have it standard.
I have lived the majority of my adult life owning cars without CarPlay, but I absolutely would not consider purchasing a new one without it.

I would never buy a car without CarPlay it is quite essential for my daily use.
I’ve always driven GM vehicles since the time I was 18, although I added a Jeep Wrangler 4xe as my daily driver and keep my Silverado 2500 for other needs (went Wrangler since GM makes no vehicles in this segment). I likely will not be purchasing another GM vehicle until they remedy this mistake. People want choice, and clumsy built—in infotainment systems are a step backwards.

Until recently they offered something unique with no competition, people did not have a choice.
As more EV's show up offering choice, CarPlay will be more of a decisive factor.
not really, i'm quite happy with tesla's infotainment. unlike other ev like kia or merc, the ryzen platform in my model y is extremely snappy and responsive.

I’m referring to the transmissions in their trucks today. I know two folks that had newer Tahoes. But trannies went out.

This article is about EVs though. Yes there's lots of cars and trucks with bad transmissions, but this conversation is about EVs which just don't usually have one.

When gas/diesel ICE vehicles are no longer allowed on the road, I'm far more likely to convert my current car or an old sports car to EV, and equip them as I see fit?

As long as these companies don't manage to lobby our ability to perform our own conversions and build our own EVs and Hydrogen ICE vehicles out of existence at least...

SMFH.

Between self-driving crud and this tracking/subscription bull-butter... I'm done with new cars.

Keep in mind people, and plenty of Apple and Google engineers bought Teslas and Rivians despite them having no CarPlay.

Maybe it's not as important as people think? If you put together a decent system to let me listen to music or navigate, I can somewhat be placated. With that said most car infotainment systems looked like absolute ass in the 2000s/2010s. The Toyota one even in 202x cars is still an eyesore from a 10+ year old system that looks and functions like crap.
I think the difference is (especially now that Tesla has Apple Music integration) that Teslas/Rivians have intuitive UI.

GM has decades of horrible UI that was "saved" by CarPlay. Now they're throwing that out, no one can be sure if they can be trusted to deliver a comparable experience.

Seems like greedy non-consumer friendly business practices to me.

I like how Volvo do this.
They offer a Google system as standard, but the option to use CarPlay (or Android) is there as well.

When the computers are integrated, the customer needs to be given a choice. This is not like the home, where you can equip it with your choice of macOS/iPadOS/Windows etc. computers.
I’m pretty sure Volvos with Android Automotive still don’t support Android Auto, which is kinda funny.

I’m someone who bought my Volvo before CarPlay was supported on Android Automotive… it sucks and bluetooth is not a substitute. Many Android apps are not available on AA… like Apple Music and Waze. Volvo message boards were filled with complaints.

If you’re 100% in the Google ecosystem then yes, AA is awesome. But any iPhone owner will be frustrated.

General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).

CarPlay-Phone-Call.jpg

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC in the United States. It will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, which goes on sale this summer. The company plans to continue offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its combustion models, which are expected to be phased out by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. Owners of existing GM cars that currently have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be able to continue using the systems.

GM has worked on infotainment software with Google since 2019 that tightly integrates with other vehicle systems such as navigation and GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. Future GM infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify and Audible, and iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth. EV buyers will also get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no extra cost for a period of eight years.

The move is expected to help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive and accelerate a strategy to incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services. Notably, GM was not included in Apple's list of automakers that plan to offer the next-generation CarPlay experience.

It’s like when supermarkets decided not to support Apple Pay, instead trying to make customers use some custom app. Or when UK gov thought they could release their own Covid 19 track and trace app.

This is purely driven by people that have no clue… and have delusions of grandeur.. that will cost them dearly..

You can have an ICE car converted to electric you know

Exactly..

Probably the way I'll go .. The timing will depend on how long my current car's engine avoids major issues and regulations..

I just hope these companies don't start lobbying our ability to convert away from us...

I think an old MG or classic VW Bug w/ an EV drive train would make for a nice around town car..

I wasn't expecting to see another article about GM's long slide into irrelevance on MacRumors of all places, but somehow I'm also not surprised. :p
