How much do you guys estimate Apple pay these folks for every ad they shoot...$30,000?

I don't know if this ad campaign played a role in this but Apple hating/bashing has never seemed at so high a level on the internet. Apple probably isn't too worried about this with their market share numbers skyrocketting but still…

I bet that CanSecWest PWN2OWN contest's results will be thrown on the mat to invalidate this campaign's message. :(

wasn't she in the that fox show? arrested construction? i thought she was quite enigmatic then and now... well, i prefer her then - sad to say this advert ruined my imagination of her as friends ruined my image of that girl who is popular - just the irritation

exactly. and just like car companies say how their cars are more spacious than their [named] competitor, or have better mileage ratings, or more horsepower . . . a commercial needs to tear down the competition while building their own product up. this is a classic contrast piece that i personally think is effective and humorous.

wow the ad isnt funny at all.
btw which companies exactly tear their comeptitors down?
do we see in bmw or mercedes ads any bashing like we see here?
no, a enterprise/company with class doesnt need to blackmail another competitor. its not about showing one individual strong points anymore...
only the weak ones need such a way of ad. (apples ads are kinda like politics... hillary blackmailing obama and the other way around, its not about who they are and what they stand for. its about what the enemy isnt)
this is most likely the most effective way as u mentioned but as well as the most dirty.

and bah these ads are so exaggerated... mac os hacked in one day, roflmao.
why dont they try to fix it instead of wasting time and money in ads.

Man, Justin's hair is lookin' greasy.

But Judy more than makes up for it. Loved seeing her in this ad, as well as the first time I saw her (in the Garry Shandling bomb What Planet Are You From?).

how many have there been now - 30? Isn't that rather a lot by advertising standards?

I'd love to see them go with a new upbeat graphical type advert rather than these boring 2 man scenes with no life or soul to them.

The "Vista Sucks" campaign is getting a bit tiresome. Why not concentrate on how great OSX is instead? I think even my grandmother, is aware that Vista has not lived up to it's potential by now.
Personally, I find the yoga ad a bit offensive in its slamming of Vista. How would Vista mess up his Yoga billing? If MS had been as aggressive in slamming some aspect of Macs, say when 10.0 came out, or because Macs ran fewer apps, we'd have been pretty upset.

Still, if your grandma knows how bad Vista is I'd guess that's probably because of these ads, which is exactly the point. There's no one but Apple relentlessly communicating that message to millions of consumers out there.

Can Microsoft actually take action against Apple on these ads?

Microsoft is free to bash Apple but that is not smart for a company that has 90 % marketshare, taking on the iPod is a more logical step.

These adds remind me of the Pepsi vs Coca-Cola battle back in the seventies, Pepsi was bashing Coca-Cola with these taste adds and Coca-Cola's follow up adds made it far worse than before.

The best thing MS can do now is take the beating and improve Vista to prove these adds wrong. :p

Apple are a niche player - and they are in a market (when it comes to OS choice) that only gives the standard user 2 choices - OSX or Windows.

With the facts at hand - Windows has the lion share of market, the only way they can raise real awareness isnt by saying 'Let's ignore Windows and exalt OSX!' - because as the niche player it won't appeal to the PC masses.

They raise awareness by saying 'Look at windows, face it, it's not so great - we're better' - and that's what these ad's set out to do. And they do it very well. Apple very rarely say 'look at the individual points why we're better' - they might do it in print - but rarely on-screen. And that's their marketing M.O. - and has been for years - and it works for them. Apple are a healthy company with a great brand - and marketing that reflects that.

I'm surprised at how many people here have missed the point of the ad's and seem to be critiquiing them based on their own Apple consumer habits. 'We' who are on an Apple website - are not the ones Apple are trying to communicate to with these ads. Look at ad's for the Macbook Air - they are pure hardware - they appeal to everyone in the market for a device. The 'PC & Mac' ad's are for Windows users - so before everyone jumps up to become a bedroom creative - I would say look behind the real market intentions of the adverts.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

I thought both of these were good. The Yoga one was the best IMHO.

I have to say these ads walk a fine line and are bordering on sort of pompous with that whole "I'm so great but in a non egotistical ""I'm so great"" way".

Reminds me of the South Park episode where the hybrid owners were smelling their own farts.

As for vista bashing- thats what opened my eyes to how bad windows was- I just assumed all my problems with my computer were something that just had to be lived with.

If MS had been as aggressive in slamming some aspect of Macs, say when 10.0 came out, or because Macs ran fewer apps, we'd have been pretty upset.

That's the thing; it wouldn't even be worth the money for MS to run counter-ads. They know whatever they release will sell because of the OEM contracts. Vista sold well over the entire Mac OS X installed base in less than a year. Plus, MS is probably THRILLED at the idea of more Mac users because they know that many will end up buying retail versions of MS Office and/or Windows which fetch much more revenue (and profit) per license than OEM licenses.

no, a enterprise/company with class doesnt need to blackmail another competitor.

BMW and Mercedes have there own market, bashing each other or others won't help. These adds are only affective when a very small competitor has to take on a giant in his market, a typical example is a small or local bank taking on the big names.

LOL, that one's pretty funny! :D

Oh, and for all of the people who are using the words 'bashing' and 'pompous' and 'smug', get a life you idiots. This is a company's products' advertisement!!!!!!!!!!

Funny thou how they forget to mention their own problems.
Like yellow screens, skipping keyboards, reset problems ETC ETC.
Maybe they could make the MAC guy 1/3 rd Chinese.

Yoga featuring Judy Greer

Apple has posted two new 'Get a Mac' ads featuring actors Justin Long and John Hodgman playing "Mac" and "PC", respectively. The two new ads continues with some more attacks against Microsoft's Vista operating system, but also points out why Macs might work better:

Yoga - features Judy Greer as a Yoga instructor frustrated with Vista.

Breakthrough - brings back the Counselor who points out that PC's issues comes from having different vendors responsible for the hardware and software, while Mac's all comes from one vendor (Apple).

Apple has also continued with custom web ads which has run on many prominent web sites.

The bottom line is that these ads are obviously working as Mac sales are thru the roof, so Apple would be crazy to stop running them now. When they do start to lose their effectiveness with the masses, I'm sure they'll change their ad strategy when that time comes. They obviously aren't geared toward the people that post on sites like this one anyway.

you know one day Apple is just going to have Justin Long holding up a card bob dylan style that just says "Vista Sucks" - pathetic.

Can Microsoft actually take action against Apple on these ads?

Yes, MS can sue Apple. Everybody else does these days, so why not them.

The only problem going to court is, that facts are revealed and the truth is exposed. Does MS want to take that chance with Vista?

"Maybe I should have taken Pillates?" "It's Mac's fault." (I got a chuckle on those tag lines, even if people didn't like these commercials).

HAHAHAHAH, did you register for the forum just to post about this ad? Poor corporate fanboy.

I found the Yoga ad kinda funny, except for the part of "Vista still not working". Two of my friends just got Vista machines (one desktop and another on a laptop) and they've both worked flawlessly....

My friend who got the laptop got a really nice looking HP Special Edition on sale for $799. I hate to admit to this, but it made me *kind of* regret my MacBook purchase. He got a more powerful processor, more RAM, larger hard drive, a nicer Nvidia graphics chipset, than my refurbished black MacBook for $1049.

And, BTW, ALL the new HP laptops blow away the ugly white MacBooks.

My friend for $50 less than a Mini got a machine twice the power and twice more features (DVD burner, discreet 8000 series nVidia graphics card). (Yes, this has been discussed to death already).

My point: stop the MS/PC bashing...

Dear Apple,

You REALLY NEED to stop these ads, they're starting to make you look pretty bad.

Here's my rendition:

Mac, played by old guy with white hair, white beard, and white robe and cane.
PC, say, played by Nellie Furtado (or insert favorite good-looking person here)...

Mac: I'm the newly updated MacBook!
PC: I'm the new HP Special Edition PC Notebook!
Mac: I run OS X and everything is integrated.
PC: I run Vista and I'm powerful enough to do so!
Mac: PC, is that you in there?
PC: No, he's been replaced, we're newly designed, less costly, and can run Vista! (starts dancing and singing).
Mac: no way...PC, PC, you in there???
