Updated to 2.2.1, then frostyapp....no go

:(:( I cant get it to work on 2.2.1. I updated this morning and tried the frostyapp tonight... still not working. Damn.

Just got emoji myself and it's worth $.99 but why would Apple really want to block people outside of Japan from using it? It should be standard on every iPhone. I haven't updated to 2.2.1 yet but I've read that you've already got emoji unlocked than you're okay; it only keeps new people with 2.2.1 software from getting it.

The keyboard doesn't just "show up," you have to enable it in Settings.

You know this, right?

Try the App "Touch Dial Emoji" from the app store. It has a setting to enable th emoji and is easy to work. Also you can delete the app and the emoji still stay.

Sadly, I updated 3 minutes before finding this article. It doesn't work on the new firmware. I am pissed. Apple annoys me sometimes.

The vcard method sucks, I would rather pay the $.99 to get the real emoji keyboard. I will wait to see if it officially works in 2.2.1 first though.

Wow, just ****ing great. I literally pissed those 99 cents right down the drain.

**** Apple. How about you add emoticon support like every other god damn phone since 2001.

I swear to God I am gonna throw this piece of **** in the lake.

oh yeah you should have read the post above you :D the update disables it frickin APPLE

Anyway, if you had Emoji enabled in 2.2 you can update to 2.2.1 and Emoji will still be enabled. I just did it. If you are scared, make a backup (iTunes backs up your settings like Emoji) and restore after you update. It will still be there.

I am baffled as to how you guys are screwing this up. All I did was hit "update" and Emoji was still there when it was done.

We "screwed up" by updating before finding out about this hack.

How are you baffled?
I updated to 2.2.1 this afternoon, found out about Frostyplace tonight, and downloaded/installed it.

It doesn't work unless you previously had it installed on 2.2, which I didn't. Not much room for confusion...

FrostyPlace

I just finished downgrading to 2.2, loading FrostyPlace app, and re-updating to 2.2.1, emjoi keyboard still works.

In the iTunes App Store, FrostyPlace developers admits that v1.1.1 does not work with iPhone fw 2.2.1. They have submitted v1.1.2, awaiting approval.

To downgrade I use (PC: Vista*), SHIFT+"Check for Update" Button and selected cashed *.ipsw.
[hidden Located: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw]

Everything loaded smoothly.
EDIT: iTunes asked frequently if I wanted to install newer 2.2.1 Firmware. I kept clicking No or Not Now, whatever not to update.
Followed steps of FrostyPlace to activate emoji.
Reset my iPhone, reattached to my computer, then re-updated the iPhone firmware. I even deleted FrostyPlace after I was done and emoji still works.
HORRAY!

* Yes, I know Vista sucks and Seven is looking promising, still not a Mac...

Is emoji public-use or licensed? Because with Apple making .30 every FrostyPlace they are making their fees easy.

FOR PEOPLE WITH 2.2.1 UPDATE!!

I can confirm that the Touch Dial Emoji does work on unlocking the phone with the update.

To enable Emoji, follow these steps
(1) Upgrade iPhone firmware to 2.2.1
(2) Install Touch Dial Emoji version 1.2 from App Store, iTunes Link http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=286534260&mt=8
(3) Goto Settings -> Touch Dial -> turn Enable Simley icon to ON
(4) Launch Touch Dial
(5) Go to Settings>General>Keyboard>International Keyboards>Japanese and enable "Emoji."

worked like a champ.

Not an ad *******, I was trying to get the frostypages thing to work and spent my 99 cents on it and it obviously doesn't work, so I found this solution and tried it.

If you want Emoji it looks like the only way to currently get it working on the phone. Take it or leave it, but I am sending smiley faced poo to my friends.

Cool, good to know. I don't understand number 1 though. Shouldn't it read

(1) Upgrade iPhone firmware to 2.2.1?

Oops, changed that, i just copy and pasted from their help site the steps and it was from when the 2.2 thing came out. Yeah i guess step 1 all together is pretty worthless now though.

Just making sure. Thanks for posting up that it still works in 2.2.1. :)

No worries, I was late to the party and was subsequently pissed when I learned that the update broke the Frosty Places app. So I tried this out as a last ditch resort and tadah it worked perfectly.

The frostyplace developers have posted a note in the App Store listing about the 2.2.1 update. They say they have a 1.1.2 update in the App Store pipeline to fix the errors while running the app in 2.2.1. Hopefully this will revive the Emoji trick!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I like the frosty method

I can confirm that the Touch Dial Emoji does work on unlocking the phone with the update.

I can verify this works. I can also verify that the world is full of scared, fear spreading, misinformed people.

"oooh 2.2.1 disables emoji! downgrade! don't upgrade! run!!! WTF APPLE??? OMG!!!"

This is why the global economy, and especially the US economy are tanking. People hear one or 2 anecdotes and run with them.
