How would I revert to 2.2 on a Mac?
Is there a way other than to restore to an earlier backup?

The vista guy gave me PC talk and I don't understand.

Nevermind, You hold option + restore, then search for 2.2 ipsw and it begins extracting. We'll see if this works!

I have tried this and it errors out in the middle, which forces you to do a regular restore and then a restore from backup. It sucks. Just wait for the FrostyPlace update and use that when it is here.

Yeah, it did restore my phone but is now 2.2 with emoji, yay.

beats paying 3.99 for another app, well, now I'll update back to 2.2.1. Come on snappiness!

The backup is 2.2 so if the emoji's get wiped out then I can do it again there I guess, then update. Well, I am going to put these puppies to work. Smiley poop for all.

I can verify this works. I can also verify that the world is full of scared, fear spreading, misinformed people.

"oooh 2.2.1 disables emoji! downgrade! don't upgrade! run!!! WTF APPLE??? OMG!!!"

This is why the global economy, and especially the US economy are tanking. People hear one or 2 anecdotes and run with them.

What is your problem? It does disable the 99 cent emoji method, and many people are still buying the frostyplace app thinking it will work in 2.2.1 and being sorely disappointed. While I agree that the US is the most afraid country on earth and that's not a good thing, I hardly think its relevant in this issue.

I did this successfully. What you need to do is download the 2.2 quickpwn tool. After you get the errors, run quickpwn. No need to jailbreak (just unselect any of the jailbreaking install options), then you can start your phone in 2.2, get the emoji icons working and then upgrade to 2.2.1. It took a couple hours, but it's worth it for those of us who don't want to spend another $4 or jailbreak to get emoji icons.

Except it doesn't work if you install on 2.2.1....

I can verify that some people just assume because it works for them it works for EVERYONE..

Will restoring to a backup just wipe out the emoji though? arrgh

How in the hell did you accomplish that!? Mine just errors and then when I restore again it goes back to 2.2.1

Ah, thanks for detailing that for me. So, when it errors, run QuickPwn, then upgrade. Will it resync all my notes and alarms, etc after quickpwn? Thanks!

Friends not seeing emoji caricatures just boxes!

Did the frostyplace thang and got emoji on my iPhone 3G
without much trouble but the people I text just see boxes.

What's going wrong?

I must have clicked the wrong backup, because it synced my phone to its state about 3 months ago, but yes, I restored from a backup and am now running 2.2.1 with emoji still working from frostyplace. :)

1. Downgrade to 2.2
2. Use FrostyPlace to enable Emoji
3. Backup with iTunes
4. Press the "Update" button
5. If Emoji is not there for whatever reason (Hint: IT WILL BE) then just restore from your backup and it will be there.

Well, I guess we now know how to coax an update out of Apple; slip a feature by them that they don't want. Otherwise, they will just sit on their asses. Maybe during one of these update "fixes" they will slip cut and paste into it.

AT&T didn't release this update ....

Has anyone tried doing this in 2.2.1? I know if you already had emoji enabled before, they still work, but I just downloaded the app now (I've already updated to 2.2.1) and I get this error every time I open the app:

YUP ITS EXACTLY WHAT I GET!!!! DARNIT< I WANTED TEH EMOJI!!!!

The first time I restored it asked to sync from a backup (as if it was not restored) so I just restored again to my backup and it worked the second time.
Time consuming but most definitely worth it;)

I tried doing this (quickpwn) and it wouldn't recognize my phone and itunes said it needed to be restored...
Any insight?

I'm still on 2.2 and I got the emoji working yesterday. I'm getting a bit confused reading these post so if I updated to 2.2.1 I'll lose the emoji?

Well I let iTunes restore it again and now quickpwn said it didn't support the version, which is obviously 2.2.1. I can't figure out how to get back to 2.2

You have to restore to 2.2. Just clicking restore will restore to the current version (2.2.1). Hold down select when you click restore and find the 2.2 firmware on your computer. The instructions are listed earlier in this thread.

I did that and it gets to the upgrading firmware point, and then fails. From there Quickpwn will not recognize it and iTunes said it needed to be restored.
