Will the data plan be required to tack on to the vocie plan?

I don't have anything to base this on except for knowing phone companies greed and some previous smartphone launches (i.e., Treo when it was first released)

But I think that, yes, they're going to require a data plan with the voice plan, at least at first. And I think that's going to make a lot of people who plan on not using the data services, or just use wi-fi, quite upset...

Can anybody here support Apple's (and Steve's) claim that this device, even setting aside the phone and internet features, is "the best iPod ever"?

I mean, sure it has a slightly bigger screen than the 5th-gen iPod, but only one-tenth as much storage space (8 GB vs. 80 GB). It plays the exact same music files and connects (one hopes) through the same type of docking connector to the exact same devices... so what makes it the "best" ever? From my perspective, it's not even "as good" of an iPod as what I've already got.

As far as I can see, the iPhone is a smaller PSP, plus a phone, minus the games... for more than three times as much money.

better
wider screen - better for movies
touch-screen cover-flow
improved user interface (?)

worse (or no better)

battery life
storage

I assume since there are few details that the file capabilities are similar.
apart from that I can't think of anything. So whether it is in fact better than the latest iPod Video is arguable. It is certainly just as good, only in a different way. So certainly no worse. Since the battery only lasts a few hours for watching video, 8Gb on a small screen is not the end of the world, although it would be nice to see expandable storage. why now an SD card slot I ask?

Will the data plan be required to tack on to the vocie plan?

I wish we knew.... I scour the internet looking for info and haven't seen it.

FWIW, I did talk to a AT&T rep and was told I could extend my current contract. After pressing for more info to see how valid it was she did say that is what they expect to be able to do but don't have all the info at this time.

A guy at the Apple Store said he doesn't expect to know anything until the day before....

number porting?

it now seems that the iphone will be activated through itunes rather than in-store. Do you think itunes will have the ability to port numbers from other carriers? I'm planning in switching from verizon to cingular but i want to keep my phone number. anyone want to buy a moto q? :p

I think everyone is missing the point on Flash and Java. It is not going to "kill" the phone. However:
No Flash
No Java
No 3G
No real 3rd party development tools
No IM
No expandable storage
No feedback on keyboard

All of these are available on phones that cost less.

P6

I'm not asking to be a jerk, but rather as an actual question... but can you point me to a phone to does have flash, java, 3G, significant 3rd party support, im'ing, expandable storage and a 'normal keyboard'?

Why Flash and Java?

I can't think why anyone needs Java or Flash other than games (limited vision, I guess). I wonder if the iPod games will work on the iPhone. If they're running OS X, then it seems like there is no reason some pretty advanced stuff can't run, but the controls could definitely change since there is no scroll wheel (perhaps for the better).

Will the data plan be required to tack on to the vocie plan?

Also, from the cosumerist, I read that if you have to sign up for a data plan, just call the next day and cancel that portion. In theory, that should work but don't know if they are going to do anything special for the iPhone.

Slightly off-topic, but can anybody explain to me why MS Exchange has some stranglehold monopoly on corporate email? What is so special about it that it requires some proprietary Microsoft software? Obviously I'm not part of the corporate world...

8gb is enough and plus how much can you really expand with SD cards anyway... isn't the max like 4gb on them? Plus I would imagine that a 4 gig card would be pricey though I will admit I haven't looked at the prices.

True large capacity SD cards are not give-away prices, but many people have these cards for other devices (e.g. I have a bunch for by EOS DSLR) so they could be reused for other purposes. Also capacities and prices of media cards are coming down rapidly so it would have been quite feasible to limit the iphone itself to 4GB and include an SD slot to allow people to expand as the needed.

Well, the RAZR has 3rd part support, and IM. Other Moto phones also have mini-SD card slots, and none of these phones are exactly bleeding edge $500 phones here.

In a single word - entrenchment. Same reason that companies who are on Lotus Notes (the largest commercial competitor) tend to stay that way. For large corporations with huge investments in Exchange infrastructure, support staff and procedure/process it is an expensive proposition to switch. Plus the fact that it is actually pretty good. I think that Exchange and SQL are probably the best pair of products that MS offer.

The photos have been updated @ Apple's Website..

The Email section seems to have Outlook photo... Odd..

....

The Email section seems to have Outlook photo... Odd..

maybe because.....

iTunes will make email setup on iPhone a breeze by automatically syncing the settings from email accounts stored in Mail on a Mac or Outlook on a PC. Don’t worry if you’re not on one of these email services; iPhone also works with almost any industry-standard POP3 and IMAP email system.

I suspect (that in the long run) there will be more people using the iPhone with Outlook than any other email client. This will certainly be true in a few years if apple meet their target of 10m units p/a.

i'd think just about every palm, rim, htc, mid to high-end nokia, as well as plenty of sony- and motophones.

Honestly, those arer all geek features. I think initially Apple is relying on a big enough part of the geek crowd to buy the phone but once it takes off and the prices come down, most people really aren't going to care about those missing features.

3G in the USA is laughable and it drains the battery on devices like no other (my roommates BlackJack had to be recharged twice a day until he shut it off... now he gets up to 2-3 days).

.

I wouldn't call 3G a geek feature. For the iPhone to sell anywhere else in the world it will need to be 3G, and it's the only way you'll be able to have a decent web browsing experience away from a wifi zone. Battery life is fine on modern 3G phone and, besides, you'll sync it with your Mac most days which will charge it.

I'm hoping that the rumour about the European iPhone having a 'different form factor' means that it will have a slightly deeper casing to accommodate 3 (sadly, 3G phones tend to be slightly larger).

We'll see...

Exchange has taken hold over the last few years as the the email, not because of quality but because of MS, as usual.

People think MS makes money on Windows and Office licenses and they do but their main money is Exchange. There were no enterprise level "messaging" apps years ago, or they were left wanting, IBM Lotus Notes, Novell Groupwise, there was a hole, and MS filled it, and eventually tied it to their Directory services known as Active Directory, basically LDAP, but MS's LDAP, known as AD.

Now the insidiousness of Exchange is the MS CAL, (Connection Access License), what is this. $50.00 per user who is connected, say you have 5000 users, that $250,000 for MS, just like that, and you pay it or be fined. Now do you see how MS makes money, it is a cash cow, they do not want to see go away.

Its the same story, MS gets people hooked / entrenched on mediocre technology, and fear spreads at the instance any thought comes up of anyone leaving (MS) Exchange behind.

IT departments across the corp. world are hooked on it, entrenched in it and they don't want to change because that is what they are on and fear of moving to anything else because it may not work.

Plus, what is out there as a packaged enterprise level corp email / directory services, as a replacement. Kerio Mai, Leopard Server Mail, Cyrus, etc.

Plus remember Corp email in the minds of IT directors is now tied to directory services, they are hand in hand, and everyone wants to use MS's AD which is tied to Exchange.

I don't like it anymore than you do, and don't expect Apple to be able to penetrate this in large enterprise corp environments. I think Apple has given up this particular fight.

Apple will not address that arena, instead focus on SMB (Small, Medium Businesses) with Leopard Server / Mail, etc, that has no CAL's and is using IMAP and CalDAV, open calendaring, I for one wish to see this seriously take hold.
