It seems like people are slamming it just because it dares to criticize Apple. I haven't used Lion, and I don't know how much I'd agree with the article, but it seems to make some intelligent points.

You're quite right, there are many valid points made in the article. I have a new respect for Gizmodo, for having the courage to stand up to the menacing Apple legal department, who is locked and loaded, ready for Steve to pull the trigger on another lawsuit. Something he seems to take great pleasure in. Ever since Gizmodo dared to tell the thruth, they have been blacklisted by Apple.

It does seem that in his old age, Steve Jobs is getting grumpy, increasingly acerbic, abrasive and focused like the best of dictators.

Yet he is indeed entitled, because in the USA most people worship money as thought it's the only thing that matters.

People are expendable, their money is not.

All hail the greedy creeps that occupy the planet, and are led by non other than the greatest money worshiper of all Steve Jobs.

Your capitalism resentments might be better aimed at bankers and hedge fund managers as "the greatest money worshippers of all".

I kind of agree with the LaunchPad issue; as I can do all the application launching I need from the Dock, which is a superior method IMO. With hiding and magnification my dock is unobtrusive and easy to use.

I suppose LaunchPad could be used to simplify a dock, but it doesn't really replace it or provide a good alternative.

It might work if launched by a key-press, but overall it's a touch-screen layout which doesn't really map onto desktops or even laptops, where you can't just tap the icon visually since the input methods are disconnected from the screen.

Mission Control though seems more my thing; while it might seem a "cluster****" at first glance, I don't really see it that way, I think that anywhere that visual information is presented it becomes fairly intuitive to a user once they realise what they're seeing. At which point you recognise what each thing is, and it just becomes simple.

Did anyone ever expect Jesus Diaz to effuse about Lion? I'm taking Gizmodo's review with a pinch of salt.

Wow. Did you even read your link? Gruber made some ridiculously strong accusations against a guy and claiming he fled the country in order to avoid the police. But in his update he is revealed to be completely full of crap proving he will go to any lengths to defend Apple.

And Apple suckup Gruber (who doesnt allow comments since half his stuff is unfounded or made up) is your reason for not accepting the opinion of a blogger who actually used the OS and wrote a very articulate article regarding his opinions?

Honestly, I have more faith in the negative opinions than the positive ones because it seems like all these positive opinions are rooted more in a desire to "protect" Apple while the negative ones are simply giving real world perspectives as end users.

Kudos' for a very well written and enjoyable article.

Your thoughts mirror mine very closely. As a long time power user there are far too many "annoyances" for me, but the reality is users such as myself are no longer valued by Apple, despite our loyalty and all the money we've spent with them.

Speaking only for myself I've purchased over 15 new PowerBooks / MacBook Pros and tens of thousands of dollars if we count the three Mac Pros I'm currently using (along with all the Apple peripherals) for the various resource intensive scientific and design tasks I do. One of those Mac Pros is a dedicated personal server, so as to keep the massive volume of files I have safe and out of the cloud.

At the end of the day I simply love Apple (or at least Apple when it was a computer copmany) and plan to ride out this lowest time in the history of the company.

How ironic, they've never been weaker or lower when it comes to pro quality computers, and yet they've never been richer, if one only worships money, and is sick enough to believe that's all that matters.

A good well balanced large scale enterprise in the USA, not only is in the business of making money, but also building a product or service that contributes to the betterment of society.

Apple is so greedy they just cannot, or will not understand that concept.

Steve Jobs will go to his grave an extremely wealthy man, I wonder if the last picture of the man is one in which he is seen hugging and kissing his money.

Petvas,

Very nice blog article. Enjoyable read. Thank You.

I guess I can't offer any complaints, but then again,
I am rather limited in how I use Mac OS X.

As I noted before, I am really enjoying the Lion experience.

Only sour note for me, which like you, is for those of us
that (for example) are using a 27" iMac and 27" Cinema
Display, you can't run an app full screen without wreaking
havoc on the secondary display. However, I am very
confident Apple will fix that problem in the near future.

Your argument is really narrow-minded and ignorant.

Thanks for the compliment.

Not many here actually understand and respect that this is a public forum of opinion.

One that welcomes others viewpoints.

That mine vary from yours, is obviously something that has hurt you deeply.

It is really simple: Power users like complex stuff that arent attractive enough to most people. Apple (and other companies) just analyze the market and try to offer products that match the needs of the people. It is really difficult to find a balance between power user features and stuff that most people like. We tend to get forgotten in the process but I guess we have to live with it. We cannot expect that people will become more intelligent and try to understand how computers work..instead computers have to become easier to use. This is what Apple is doing. It has nothing to do with greed, they just want to be the best consumer oriented company in the world and they are making a very good job at it.
Lion has still many things that Power users will love. Lion Server is one of them and I absolutely love it. Don't expect that such features will get any attention. Try to read behind the lines!

I can consider myself a hugh OS X fan (even from OS9). And yes, Lion is the worst OS X version ever concerning GUI performance. It is so bad I wend back to SL. The difference between those two is striking/shocking. Really...

HOw can you even compare this to SL yet, it isn't a fully functional release, until all the kinks have been ironed out, and how the reviewer can even review a preview without the final version I don't know.

Ridiculous, reserve judgement UNTIL it's officially released.

Preview copy?!

I believe the blog reviewer, Petvas, has Lion GM.

That's not a preview copy. That is the final retail release.

Most of the kinks have been worked out otherwise it would not have made Gold Master.

And as far as kinks are concerned, I have yet to see any newly released OS, whether it be Mac or Windows that doesn't have kinks that are quickly patched by updates shortly after its release.

Nice try, but your assumptions are all wrong.

I thrive in a free market environment (capitalism) as the CEO of a very successful, profitable, and socially responsible company.

Your attempt to discredit based on assumption is, well you know what they say about people that assume....

Sorry, where was it that any attempt at some type of discrediting happened again?

You took my post entirely wrong friend.

I've been using DP4 and the GM for a month now and I agree with nearly everything the Gizmodo review says.

It's no where near a vista though.

A) switch off natural scrolling
B) switch on show scroll bars always
C) switch on finder status bar
D) remove finder all my files
E) show finder local hard drive and drag it to the top of finder favorites
F) ignore mission control
G) ignore launchpad
H) ignore full screen mode

And you have a (marginally) better snow leopard.

Let me be clear here - I am not a Luddite, and normally embrace change. The only OS I've ever downgraded was Vista, and even that was after six months. I can say now that I won't be downgrading Lion - it is still an upgrade, albeit a poor, muddled and confused one.

 Are you serious? That's such a cliché. :p

Maybe it is a clichè but most people are either not tech savvy and don't want to become, or they just don't get how computers work. I am not saying that people should try to understand computers. I am just saying that all technology companies want to create appealing products for this market.

I really struggled to not comment on this post but c'mon...

Positive opinions of Lion = unobjective Apple fanboyism
Negative opinions of Lion = the truth

In my experience, there are just as many people whose negative opinions are tainted by a prepossessed dislike for Apple, change, or the iOS UI as there are those whose positive opinions are blindly founded on pure fanboyism.

Except your only viewpoint on these forums are nothing but negative and anti-Apple. Anyone can see your post history and obviously see this. I honestly don't know why you continue to hang around here, on an Apple news site.

The topic here is about Gizmodo's negative review of Lion, and you end your "viewpoint" with Steve Jobs, the greedy businessman going to his grave with his money. Yet, your logic fails to grasp the fact that Lion continues the trend of the "lowest priced OS" price tag in history, with unlimited installs to every Mac in your household with just one purchase.

Is this your viewpoint of Apple being greedy?

Way to stay on point.

Lion has still many things that Power users will love.

I have yet to try Lion, but as long as I can open Terminal.app and be in a shell it's power user enough for me. ;)

Even power users can make use of benefit from and enjoy the consumer oriented features of iOS and OS X. Even we want to relax and just use our computers every once in a while.

I'm on Lion and I use Terminal all the time. It works the same as in Snow Leopard. The only differences are the addition of a full screen mode and previous commands are saved due to Resume (I think).

It's definitely Apple's Vista. They just tacked on some ipad garbage onto snow leopard

Definitely not upgrading.

The more I read about Lion, the more I am against upgrading to it. There is really no feature that I am attracted to.

Expose was perfect as it is, I use at most 2 spaces and that is only for when I am doing Photoshop work, on the otherhand I use Expose constantly, I don't want it to be combined.

I hope Apple decides to release the versions of Mail and calendar on the app store for snow leopard.
