I have an iPad 3 and I am very happy with it. It does have iOS7 and I have not noticed any sort of slowdown or lag. And I never considered it heavy or bulky. I was at an Apple store yesterday getting my iPhone's battery replaced, so while I waited I played around with an iPad Air. It felt just as light as my iPad 3, I didn't notice it being much lighter. Not that weight was ever a factor for me, but I am glad I hung on to my 3. I am hoping to get at least 2 more years of productivity out of it before I upgrade.

The 3 is great until you use a 4 or an Air. They are a lot faster. It's one of those things that you don't really feel until you use the newer tech and mostly likely a lot of us don't need the newer ones but they are a fair bit better in performance.

Plastic feel and noise from iPad air screen ???
What are you speaking about ???

More like, what are you talking about. Many users have reported the same, the glass finish of the Air screen feels like plastic, and typing on the screen makes a noise like tapping on plastic. It is much noisier than typing on a 4, and virtually impossible to type without making a noise.

Now you have a heavy hot ipad. Been there.

What? While the iPad 3 used to run hot, I've had 3 iPad 4's and none have ever run any warmer than the Air.

If this feel like plastic to you, well, the problem is your ...
I switched from a 4 to an Air and it's a real upgrade in any sense.

You shouldn't blindly defend what you don't really know...

There are many people who have commented the same, the "plastic" glass of the Air touchscreen feels (and sounds when tapped) cheap.

For example:

I'm coming from an Ipad2 and haven't really played around much with Ipad 3,4 or mini. The Air display really feels like plasticky to me. It has that plastic texture and feel and seems to give and flex a bit when touched. You definitely know the Ipad 2 display covering is glass. Please tell me I'm wrong and there's a reason for the way it looks and feels. It feels like it would scratch very easy.

It's a very plasticky feeling glass, that seems a little too thin for the size of the surface of the iPad Air...

I felt it almost immediately. Pretty yuck on a thousand dollar device. N7 glass feels more like solid glass and thick in comparison. It probably is a mix of glass and plastic.

Apple keeps giving us what they think we want and the glass on the Air was "thinned" down for weight and thickness.

The down side is that they are structurally weaker. It will be no time before we see some bent Airs.

Its definitely a noticeable difference when upgrading but after having about a week it feels completely normal. If my nails hit the screen it gives a different sound than I expect but it feels as sturdy as I expect from an iPad.

It also looks hollow up top (see pic zoomed in at top), which probably accounts for some of the "give" on the thin glass. Sent from my iPad.

...

I am glad things worked out the way they did > 3 dud Airs since replacing my iMac takes priority.

I am iffy with iPads. I like the idea of them, but ultimately wound up selling earlier versions because they were not for me at that time.

Now that I have to shift my entertainment to digital only: the iPads are not for me thinking may have to change.

I will wait until the 2014 iPads release, given the issues I had with the Air (non existent WiFi and crap speakers.)

I'm glad people like the Air.

I can say I noticed this to coming from my iPad 3. It didn't bother me too much though.

I returned the Air in the return window due to crashing issues. I was aware of iOS 7.1 but didn't want to risk it. If I see everyone is happy I'll be another one. I want to buy a 27" iMac and AirPort Extreme while I'm there so it's not really a hassle going to the Apple store.

I'll stick with my iPad 3 until the new model has a proper stylus digitizer like the Surface Pro. This iPad stills works great, no crashes, and speedy.

When air came out, I was going to sell my 3 and get one. I was all caught up in the hype.

Then, I had trouble selling it to people I knew, and as time went by, I forgot all about it. The ipad 3 is fine for now. I don't notice its weight at all. And the setup at the apple store is horrible - they attach the Air to those security things (which of course I understand), but it really gives you a false sense of the device's weight. (It feels heavy in the store because of it)

Another reason for waiting is to wait for more ram as 1 isn't cutting it these days. I am not unhappy with the 3 at all and I am glad I am waiting.

Are YOU glad you didn't get an air?

How nice for you. I went from 3 to the Air and am so glad. No hype. It's way better.

For example:

Couple of "impression" from forum users to prove what ?

A different glass, a different sound, doesn't mean cheap or weak.
The glass layer in iPad air was reduced by 17% compared to the previous 3/4. This explain the different sound.
There is nothing cheap on it.
It is just designed to be thin and light.

I never said it was, I said it felt cheap and makes an annoying noise when tapped on.

I have never mentioned build quality or materials, if they fix the crashing issues and make a change to the screen to stop it feeling and sounding like plastic I would buy another one, (but most likely I'll keep the 4 and get a 6th gen which Apple should have improved) .

What a silly argument. The 4,3,2 etc are all junk compared to the air. The air is so thin and light you just have to live with it a few wks to appreciate the weight loss and how much more mobile it is. My 4 never left its stand and my air goes out all the time

The issue for me was memory. The fact the the iPad Air had only 1GB led to me wait. I know for most uses this isn't an issue, but I still have my iPad 3 and runs fine. iOS 7 however, sucks RAM. This would especially be an issue for 64-bit complied apps so I am content to wait.

I already have to worry about iOS 7 taking my IM apps out of memory in the background and I stop getting my messages.

Yeah I love apple iMessage. Very nice program. Until just a few months ago I was using an awful samsung flip phone that assigned three characters to every number. I just couldn't understand how people love to text when for me it was such a godawful nightmare but now I understand the appeal of texting with apples very user friendly and pleasant iMessage thing.

That's ridiculous .... There isn't anything to fix in the display' s sound and feel of the iPad air.
Isn't any louder when you tap on the screen compared to the iPad 4.
On the contrary the new form factor makes a huge difference in usability.

Coming from an iPad 2, I'm glad that I did get an iPad Air.

I was actually itching to buy an iPad 4 last spring, but I waited and stuck with my iPad 2 (16 GB Wifi) through the summer, waiting for the 2013 iPads to get released. The reason I wanted to upgrade was that I wanted 32 GB, cellular and retina display. I waited because the upcoming full-size iPad was said to be significantly lighter, and because the mini would get retina display as well.

Had I bought the iPad 4 when I wanted it, then I would probably have gotten buyer's remorse in Oct/Nov, the same way I felt a tiny sting when the iPad 3 came out just 3-4 months after I had gotten the iPad 2.

I voted have one. I upgraded from a 3rd gen and I am still in love with it. I always say, if you wait for what's next, you'll never have one. Unless it's like a day before WWDC or a media event. This one came out in October right? That means if they gonna yearly schedule you're going to have nothing for 10 months. I personally think it's future proof for a while. I'm the type that always has to have the latest tech but if the next one was simply a CPU jump and TouchID I might skip it.

I'm glad I didn't get the Air but the rMini instead :) NO IR only very slight yellowing (within spec). I absolutely love this thing - but although I come from the 3 I did not vote. rMini is GREAT.

What I am waiting for is 7.1 and a cheaper price. That is not far away as waiting for the next ipad.
