I'd much prefer if the latest stories loaded first, and you scrolled down to see older stories.
Funny, I'm just the opposite. Can't stand apps that lose my place and force me to spend time scrolling back to where I was when I left so i can keep going.

Fortunately apples got us both covered. Just tap the time in the top bar to zip right to the top/newest!

My problem with Apple's garbage "News" app, is that it forces itself on me in a horrific way.
I don't use this term lightly- but I feel like it's a form of visual rape.
I insulate myself from negative news because it's more than just "I don't care", it's that it really disturbs me & ruins my day. I don't want to read about ANY violence... not murders, not bombings, not crimes, etc. I choose NOT to allow that in my life.
I only read tech news. That's what makes me happy & that is my choice.
That has been working perfectly for many many years.
Actually, right up to when Apple started forcing this on me.
Even though I went through & tweaked my settings, unchecking "politics", entertainment", "sports", etc.. & ONLY leaving "Tech" checked; Apple IGNORES my preferences. Any time I swipe right I get sensationalist headlines "Actor died", "Suspect captured", "Market fell", etc.
I am NOT sue happy in the slightest, but I'll tell you what- if there's ever a class action about this, I'll jump.
I do NOT deserve to be force subjected to having this negativity shoved in my face, when I clearly have gone to great lengths in my life to avoid it.
Some people don't mind all that. I do. To me it's as bad, or worse than if they forced pornography to pop up unbidden, any time a user swiped right on their screen.
It is ridiculous, uncalled for, and an affront.
People should be able to control on their devices what they do NOT wish to view.

I love the news app for discovering news and I've been using it since the betas. Without the news app I was only getting news from here, 9to5Mac, and sometimes CNN.
Agreed. I am a news junkie and the 'standard round' I do a couple of times a day contains over twenty news sources from four countries in three languages. Still, with Apple News I have discovered a couple of articles on news sites that I knew existed but I would never have sought out to actively visit.

It's a text book example of improving 'discoverability' (and somewhat alleviates existing 'filter bubbles') I guess.

David Bowie has died, by the way.

Lol. Well, zero wouldn't be less than 40 million.

Have you tried Twitter, Reddit, Flipboard, Google News, Facebook, or The Onion?
Tha reason I use the News app is that it's one of few news readers that doesn't force a membership down your throat. Yes, I have an Apple account. I don't also want to invite another company into my life, especially one wanting to know my reading habits and interests. Especially Google, which no one should trust any farther than they can throw their corporate HQ. (Their entire profit model is to learn as much as they can about you and then sell it. No thanks.)

I want a news reader app with customizable content. I've tried them all. Most demand that you create an account. Some, worse, demand that I already have a Google or, shudder, Facebook account (see my problem with Google, but at least a run pretends to care; Zucky thinks we're all chumps). Reddit is mostly commentary. Onion is, well, just the Onion. Pulse was okay, but the app is buggy and then it was bought by LinkedIn. Lord.

Apple News isn't perfect. Yeah the icon stinks (whatevs). But it shows me an an array or newsfeeds I pick, and without having to join or signs up anywhere else.

Don't tap the News icon.

Why do get the feeling News is going to turn out like newsstand? With Facebook, Twitter and the browser who needs a dedicated news app? And I hate the experience....someone tweets a story they saw in the News app, the URL redirects you to the News app but when you go back to Twitter the url opened up there too. So why the heck kick me over to the News app when I can just read the story inside Twitter?

Thanks, I hate it when features are hidden. I'll have to try it when the app has a bit more to load.

In regard to your other point, they have got the History tab (hidden under 'Saved'), so you can go back and continue to read old articles you havn't finished.

My other complaints are the selection of news sources are a bit limited, and there doesn't seem to be a way to group them into categories of your choice. I liked the old Pulse app where you could add pretty much anything, including obscure blogs.

Apple is not just a "computer company"... or at least it used not to. Apple used to look for excellence from minute 0. That is what I personally admired from Apple, what brought me to Apple and what I miss.

There hasn't been an Apple service yet that has released without bugs or glitches. Not ever.

Can I ever swipe right on my screen to access Spotlight please sir???!

*please kindly read my post*

That way you won't make a fool of yourself, mmkay?!

I literally wrote the term "swipe right" twice; you must've been busy thinking up your "oh so clever" response.

Settings: General: Spotlight Search

Siri Suggestions --> Off

News still not available in Italy (and in most of the european nations). Is it so difficult to implements ?

the laws are probably different in many countries. i am sure the german news agencies and publishers for example would lose their ... over it

that being said, i got it once i set my phone to "US" but i dont really like it. its cluttered just like the "For You" section in the Music App and I get overwhelmed by the amount of content. as a result i simply dont read anything at all.

Its an utter dog on the 4S. My fault for using an old phone but still. Easiest thing to do is to follow the news you want on twitter.

What they need to improve is the speed - it takes many seconds to refresh, at which point I've started reading the headlines and snippets in front of me, then it finally refreshes and the one I was reading goes away at it jumps to the top.

Thank you!

(It's *Spotlight suggestions, btw... not Siri suggestions. That setting does NOT remove the news stories)

However... that doesn't just kill News obviously. That COMPLETELY neuters Spotlight.

It's clear that News NEEDS granular control.
I'll be honest... I don't want to disable it!
I love my news (look where I'm hanging out!). I just don't want to be force fed news that I hate. Why did Apple take all my settings, if it can't simply APPLY them??That's all I'm asking... not for the service to be shut down, not to disable it... none of that.
I just want the News to be relevant to me. That's it. It feels like I'm being reasonable.

I thought it would be useless, but I find myself ALWAYS using it. ALWAYS, as in I don't eat or poop anymore, because I'm too busy using Apple News. I had a thing called Newsify before if I remember well, but got rid of that.

On a more serious note, is it finally available in Canada ? I had to change my profile to USA to be able to see it... Come on Apple...

Aah ok got it. Try this:

"Settings, General, Spotlight Search, scroll down until you see "Spotlight Suggestions" and then it off. That makes the news portion disappear."

Wow the comment section is again filled with snarky comments.

If these people are so unhappy with everything built into the iPhone why even bothered with an iPhone? After all there are a plethora of manufacturers out there to choose from. Literally nothing Apple does can please y'all. This is like an S&M relationship

Personally I use Apple News every day and love it. The layout, particularly on iPad, is simply gorgeous. Just like Apple Music, Apple has been updating the format of News and making it more pleasant to use. Just wish there would be more sources and more way to find news related to topics.

It's a retarded app. If I wanted news with ads, i'd take off ad blockers and use safari. There's better news apps.

Thank you again!
I did know that (as I said).
But I don't want to neuter Spotlight.
I want Apple News to actually WORK!
To be clear: I like the idea. I like news.
I honed my News settings (Wired, 9-5, BGR, Engadget, etc.) ALL tech news. THAT'S what I want!!!!!!!!!!
What I am getting is sensationalist stories about death & mayhem. Yuck! I have less than ZERO interest in that. I suppose I can hobble Spotlight as a lame "workaround" if I don't want horrible negativity shoved down my throat, but that seems hardly fair!
Wouldn't you agree that news on Spotlight should come from only the sources I've set up in preferences??
I'm not a coder, but that sounds like one minute of work to implement that. It's VERY frustrating.

Aah sorry I'm getting confused between all the "xxxxx Suggestions" things.

It pays to know what's going on in the world but ignorance is bliss I suppose. Just a tip, don't book a holiday to anywhere in the Middle East. There's a reason it's cheap at the moment ;)
