Apple's Software quality is suffering. The worst part is how Eddie spun the priority of the bug.
People need to remember that Apple is a hardware company. Software resources within the company support THEIR hardware as the highest priority, then maybe they fix other issues later. Issues that affect 3rd party revenue like this are quite low on their priority scale.

3rd parties that want to play in Apple's ecosystem must keep this in mind.

Apple techs tracking down the Apple News glitch.

hehe... look at him go..

If Apple doesn't know actual numbers, then it makes the whole thing that much more interesting doesn't it.

Well, the both Stores (iTunes Music & Apps) were pretty successful when they went live. [iTMS (now iTS) has been the planet's biggest music vendor since it's fifth birthday.]

But I wonder when it comes to major new services if the same couldn't be said about all of them to some extent.

And, if the only glitch (not feature deficit, not I-don't-like-it-whining) is backside analytics underestimating deployment, that doesn't sound so horrendous.

We heard nothing but complaints about iTunes for YEARS!

For consumers using the app, you're right, it's not so horrendous. For Apple, it could be absolutely disastrous for the News App. If the content providers can't properly monetize their commitment to the app, they will stop being committed to it. The app will die on the vine.

Apt point.

We don't know the magnitude of the underestimation (do we?). Regardless, in the broadest of terms Eddy Cue was right: it's better to underestimate than overestimate usage. I don't know the details of ad revenue or profit sharing, but if that translates to more than expected income, that sounds like a pleasant surprise for content providers.

Apple is updating the news app with iOS 9.3, and also fixing the utilization stats now, so we'll see what happens. I'd be very surprised if anyone jumps ship over this.

News app is, by far, my favorite thing in OS9. It's easy to customize, and a better-implemented news aggregator than any other source out there. I wish they had it on OSX as well. There are some bugs - for awhile there I was getting constant stories on recipes - but these are minor. This has to be a win for the content providers as well, since I'd never find their stories otherwise.
