I utilize this News app and when it works, i love it. I dislike the fact that it gets stuck on old articles and takes so long to refresh to absolute current events. I think if they throw more bandwidth and server hosts at it, it will be a success!

opps... someone stuffed up.. Never used it myself, but i like Apple's stuff-ups :D it entertains me.

NOT TRUE.
Unless you hobbled Spotlight or know a way to disable it that I don't. Please explain.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. I never get notifications from News. I have the app is a special "Apple Apps" folder so I don't even have to look at it. Completely out of sight, out of mind.

I was skeptical at first, but I gave News a try and now use it everyday. It's probably my second biggest source of new now.

This app needs a better way to let you help it curate content. Maybe a way to for you to tell it to give you more articles like the you're reading or less like it. Or some sort of recommendation engine, something where when you're reading a story it will show you other articles you might be interested in or other articles that touch on the same story but maybe from a different perspective/angle. I hope Apple is really focused on better curation.

There hasn't been an Apple service yet that has released without bugs or glitches. Not ever.
Well, the both Stores (iTunes Music & Apps) were pretty successful when they went live. [iTMS (now iTS) has been the planet's biggest music vendor since it's fifth birthday.]

But I wonder when it comes to major new services if the same couldn't be said about all of them to some extent.

And, if the only glitch (not feature deficit, not I-don't-like-it-whining) is backside analytics underestimating deployment, that doesn't sound so horrendous.

I don't get notifications from News either; I didn't even know that was a possibility. That's NOT what we've been talking about.
What we've been talking about is the fact that when you access Spotlight by swiping your finger to the right from your home screen (try it right now... you'll see what I'm talking about!) random news stories that are NOT in line with your Apple News preferences show up.
If you rarely use Spotlight it might go unnoticed, but trust me... if you use it a dozen times or more per day like I do- it's distracting, annoying, & frankly- insulting. I do NOT want to be aware of Lady Gaga at the Grammy's or whatever blurb it was that I was slapped with today multiple times. Seriously, I'd LOVE it if tech news showed up.... but HATE that pop culture & "death" news pop up instead.
And you can't turn it off without disabling the awesome new features of Spotlight.

I haven't been impressed with the news reader - It takes too long to bring up a news story. I prefer snappy RSS readers.

News will never be good enough for many just as apple music and iwork and photos and every other thing apple does. I like all of these just fine and use them all fairly regularly.

Oh, that. Honestly, I don't even notice it. When I go to search I'm in a zone that my eyes are automatically at the search bar area before I even start and my fingers there as soon as it appears. Placing your fingers on the search bar makes spotlight info screen disappear.

You are right though. You should be able to turn that off. But more to my original point -- you should be able to completely remove the app, and just about any other Apple app. Apple is taking advantage of consumers (much like M$ did with Explorer before the antitrust suit) foisting these apps on us. Even Books, which use to be an opt-in app is permanent now. This goes double for apps like Stocks and Weather which are archaic compared to many of the 3rd party apps that serve these functions.

Apple News has a "glitch" that keeps money in their coffers, instead of paying authors? Wonder how that got there!

Bit knee-jerk there. Apple doesn't charge content owners one penny to participate in News. They can even sell ads and Apple doesn't charge a cent unless they use Apple's own ad agency iADs to procure those ads.

I don't mind if it's tied into the OS... like maybe you couldn't say to Siri "remind me tomorrow to change the cat litter", if Calendar was missing or something. Fine. Core Apps are ok with me... I agree that, for example if I use Adobe Reader exclusively for my reading, I should be able to delete (or at least disable/hide) Books. You're right! There's a point where they're too much! Every since I sold my Apple Watch on eBay, I've been struck with that App's lack of utility... =/

Something else the News app needs....a way to see trending stories. Apple should have a way to anonymously know what stories people are favoriting. Why isn't there a section that has trending topics/breaking news? I get a lot of news from the people I follow on Twitter. With Apple news I have no easy way of seeing things that friends/family or other people (like journalists or celebrities) I follow are interested in.

I'm not getting into debates, but you believe customers should charge their suppliers !?!? You learn something new everyday. Bye!

That icon is so bad!
It's hideous. I would say it ranks up there with some of those cheezy, crappy apps that no one uses and some single developer slapped together.

Apple is not just a "computer company"... or at least it used not to. Apple used to look for excellence from minute 0. That is what I personally admired from Apple, what brought me to Apple and what I miss.
As a long-time (since Apple II) Apple user, I feel Apple hasn't been perfect, like any company, but you could see where they really pushed the envelope, which they still do on hardware, but for software, they have been stumbling the last few years and I no longer go out of my way to recommend them. Too many software issues and iTunes on iOS and music app are very difficult to use now.

Recent issues:
1. AppleTV 2 continually reboots and we stopped using it. Our $60 Sony Blu-Ray player with netflix access works FLAWLESSLY. With that said, I couldn't flatten and reload AppleTV. After much messing with it, I found I had to hook it up to my Mac and reset it with iTunes. With how crappy it's been running, we have just been using Sony Blu-Ray for our Netflix.
2. New MacBook 2015 retina often doesn't wake from sleep. Loses wifi frequently. Frequently have to do cold reboot. Despite many great things about it, for graphics it's horribly slow, but I'm keeping it.
3. Want to view your purchases in iOS on NEW Ipad mini 2? Frequently can't see your apps because it runs out of video memory. Wifi is terrible on it (compared it iPhone). Camera sucks bad.
4. Recently updated iPhone and lost Siri (which I don't use anyway) and Safari (I don't use it either, but sometimes I have to due to Chrome once not playing along with a particular website (bank?). Anyway, I gave up on wanted to fully restore it again, but then did a reset. Siri, Safari and other Apple apps came back. HOWEVER, I could no longer search and find my apps. I found a ONE YEAR OLD solution. You what it was? You won't believe. Send and email from iCloud account to your iCloud account. I did it and my search worked again! Solution one year old and problem well over one year old.
5. iTunes has lost my music that I add to library whenever I get a new computer. Backup doesn't work. Be prepare to lose music.

I could go on and on.

What is frustrating is that I don't sense any urgency with Apple anymore. Their hardware is pretty fantastic, but software...

Oh, and I just got an ad for Apple music again. i dont' want it. And I have to turn my phone onto airplane mode to play music on iPhone because if I don't Apple tries to "phone home" and we have poor reception at work office, and my music screen goes blank. I turn on airplane mode and stops phoning home and I can see my music once again.

What's up with that, Microsof...I mean, Apple?

Tried Apple News. Hid it a few days ago.

I didn't like content being pushed in my face. There was only one site that interested me, so I use Safari for it; it's just as slick and presentable.

Like the Apple Watch, this app seems to be a solution in search of a problem.

My problem with Apple's garbage "News" app, is that it forces itself on me in a horrific way.
I don't use this term lightly- but I feel like it's a form of visual rape.
I insulate myself from negative news because it's more than just "I don't care", it's that it really disturbs me & ruins my day. I don't want to read about ANY violence... not murders, not bombings, not crimes, etc. I choose NOT to allow that in my life.
I only read tech news. That's what makes me happy & that is my choice.
That has been working perfectly for many many years.
Actually, right up to when Apple started forcing this on me.
Even though I went through & tweaked my settings, unchecking "politics", entertainment", "sports", etc.. & ONLY leaving "Tech" checked; Apple IGNORES my preferences. Any time I swipe right I get sensationalist headlines "Actor died", "Suspect captured", "Market fell", etc.
I am NOT sue happy in the slightest, but I'll tell you what- if there's ever a class action about this, I'll jump.
I do NOT deserve to be force subjected to having this negativity shoved in my face, when I clearly have gone to great lengths in my life to avoid it.
Some people don't mind all that. I do. To me it's as bad, or worse than if they forced pornography to pop up unbidden, any time a user swiped right on their screen.
It is ridiculous, uncalled for, and an affront.
People should be able to control on their devices what they do NOT wish to view.

I echo your sentiments to the letter.

I hate almost all news: the negativity and cynicism I find so anti-life. And that's what's so abhorrent about the Apple News app: despite asking to see one category only, it still shoved completely unrelated news in my face.

Bugger off, Apple; if I want to be indoctrinated into the abyss, I’ll tell you.

Can I ever swipe right on my screen to access Spotlight please sir???!

*please kindly read my post*

That way you won't make a fool of yourself, mmkay?!

I literally wrote the term "swipe right" twice; you must've been busy thinking up your "oh so clever" response.

PS You can hide the News app under Settings:Restrictions.

Thank goodness.

When the app was first launched, I was incredibly excited. I'd had a news reader that I frequently used before, but the inclusion of a wide array of sources with Apple News led me to believe that it would be, if not a replacement, a complimentary app. Unfortunately, it never quite appeared that way.

-The overall look of the app is terrible. I still can't use a transparent dock on the home screen, but in the News app, there's very little to divide content. It all just sort of blends together in one big cream colored blur. The dock is just sort of there, and the stories are just words and pictures that are tossed together without any separation. I'd prefer a cleaner look that darkens the dock, adds some boldness to the tabs, and use a blocking technique to create a box of sorts for each article.

-Give me a way to get back to the home screen with one tap. Often, since I don't use the app all that often, I'll click on links shown in the spotlight search, and then on links within those articles. After a while. It piles up, and I find myself clicking a dozen times to get back to the home screen. Or, alternatively, double clicking and exiting the app entirely.

-Speaking of spotlight search, I'll swipe over to see some headlines real quick, and, more often than not, when I click on one, it's hidden behind a paywall. What's the point of even showing me the headline if I can't read the article?

EDIT: Personally, I'd love to see Apple emulate the News Republic app. The overall design, intuitive nature, and ability to truly customize helps cement it as my go-to news app. While it's not perfect ( I'd like to see a cloud based save feature, more content providers, and a faster experience overall), but it easily tops Apple News for me.

Debate? I don't even understand what you are trying to say or what it has to do with what I wrote. Care to elaborate or are you a "drive by" poster?

I would use it a lot more but I can't read any of it with that tiny font it uses and no way of adjusting it bigger like other news apps can. I use Flipboard simply because the font size is much larger for me to see. Too bad Apple only caters to those with perfect eyes and adores their tiny font look over functionality.
