Sorry I should have been clearer, I would like to end up on iOS 5 with no jailbreak for now, can I still restore my backup?

Got it installed fine using beta 9, basically iOS 5 is awesome. Mostly the notification center, but the iCloud features are nice too. Especially Wi-Fi sync.

so i installed itunes 10.5 beta 7.. and then extracted the ipsw file using 7zip, but when i click on "Click to Update" with Shift and choose the ipsw file

I get an error msg stating :

The iPhone could not be updated. An unknown error occured (3002).

How do I fix this?

The way around that is to first backup your iPhone then do a restore while holding down the shift key to select your ipsw file. You'll go back to factory settings, but when your iPhone first starts up with iOS5, you'll get 3 options: set up as a new phone, restore from icloud backup, or restore from itunes backup, which is the one you will select.

thanks.. i was trying to avoid having to to do a restore.. and back up as it takes forever... but i guess thats the only way..

can confirm that this works great! well... newstands won't let me hide it in a folder. idk why. it's really annoying because it's like a blank app that won't disappear!

Let me check this before i do it.

Install beta 9 of itunes 10.5 (Done)
Download ios 5 gm (Done)
Back up device in iTunes. Is it beta 9 i back up in?
Put iPhone in DFU mode?
Then "Option key & click, upgrade and select the .ipsw"?

Do i need to stay in beta 9 of iTunes afterwards, or can i move back down to 10.4.1? Do i just need beta 9 for the install of GM, or do i need it for syncing and back up?

Thanks

not necessarily the restore.. its putting the apps back in.. putting the music back in.. takes lotta time.. :(

but hey.. its going to be worth it right? ;)
If you're on an internet forum, you have plenty of free time, trust me.

Stick to beta 9. It's stable enough. I'm sure 10.5 will be released by the time the 4S comes out anyway.

Thanks a lot. I need to DFU my iPhone right? How long does the install process take, approximately?

And it has to be in DFU right, you can't just go into the normal iPhone menu in iTunes?

Sorry for all the questions, don't want to mess up!

question did apple leave the 3GS out on having custom sms tones? and furthermore, did apple get rid of custom sms tones?

please respond asap.

Done. Thanks a lot for all your help guys. running perfectly. I got a text from my carrier saying i wasn't on automatic settings or something. I guess they haven't been given the release build of iOS 5 yet...

does the GM expire, like the beta's? or is this the actual final release (same version as next weeks launch) barring some major bug?

I'm sitting here with the files debating whether to go with the GM. I don't want to screw anything up, although I think curiosity will get the better of me shortly.

As long as there's no critical bugs, the GM will be the same as the version launched on October 12th. So you won't need to update and it won't expire because you don't have to "activate" it with a developer account.

Unless someone knows otherwise and can correct me?

It shouldn't expire. Unless there's a significant problem, it should be the same build as the final release due out next week.

If you debate for another week the official release should be out making the point moot.... :)
