iOS 5 GM on 3GS (8GB)
I am not a dev but since the iOS 3 GM i have the habit of installing the GM as soon as it is available. Went smoothly with iOS 5 too.
Procedure was:
- Transfer purchases and backup iPhone (twice, to make sure everything was saved)
- Backup iTunes library to external HD
- Download iOS 5 GM & iTunes 10.5 beta9
- Install iTunes b9
- Connect iPhone 3GS, alt-click restore to select the iOS 5 GM .ipsw
- Let it do its thing
- Set up & activate over wifi
- Restore from backup
- and voilà.
I am actually impressed by the responsiveness of iOS 5 on an "old" 3GS. I am positive that it is a bit zippier than 4.3.5.
Not too disappointed with the functionalities either, camera app from the lock screen opens almost instantly. Backup over wifi seems to work fine in the background. Notifications center is a welcome addition too. And basic photo editing (crop, auto-enhance, red-eye, rotate) is available and not too laggy.
Given how well iOS 5 behaves on the 3GS (8GB), i think i will give the 4S a miss and wait for the 5 to come out. Thank you Apple for making me save money
So to wrap it up, it is safe for non devs to upgrade to the GM (never had a problem myself), however some basic backup precautions (see walkthrough above) are in order... And iOS 5 works so well on the 3GS that it'd be a shame to wait another week to try it out
