I am actually impressed by the responsiveness of iOS 5 on an "old" 3GS. I am positive that it is a bit zippier than 4.3.5.
Not too disappointed with the functionalities either, camera app from the lock screen opens almost instantly. Backup over wifi seems to work fine in the background. Notifications center is a welcome addition too. And basic photo editing (crop, auto-enhance, red-eye, rotate) is available and not too laggy.

Given how well iOS 5 behaves on the 3GS (8GB), i think i will give the 4S a miss and wait for the 5 to come out. Thank you Apple for making me save money :)
Yep, I found this to be the case with my 3GS as well. Better than 4.3.5.

My MobileMe account has been upgraded to iCloud but all I get when trying to set an reminder is the ability to set a date based reminder not a location based.

Do you have an Exchange account? If so, disable Reminders from syncing with Exchange under the Mail settings.

Also, how do I convert my MobileMe account to iCloud? Are iCloud features even activated yet?

I'm downloading the iOS 5 GM right now, but I have 1 question before I install if someone here could answer it for me.

Next week, when iOS 5 is released for the public how do I update from the iOS 5 GM? Do I just go into iTunes and check for update or is the process a little more complicated then that?

The GM will be what is released on Wed....

Best (most likely) case, based on what others have said: If the public release build # is the same, which should be true unless a significant issue with the GM pops up, then you won't need to do anything as you'll be on the same version.

Worst (unlikely) case: You may need to do a Restore to the new version.

I keep on getting this error message:

"The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)."

I installed iOS 10.5 beta 7 and I downloaded the GM copy. I tried to install the GM via the restore method. It wont' work.

What am I doing wrong?

Can someone help me please?

Are you restoring from the ipsw file? Also, make sure you downloaded the correct one. There are different GM files depending what model iPhone you have as well as if its GSM/CDMA, etc.

It could also be possible you got a corrupt download, might be a virus?

Not allowed to give you link to where I got mine, but I know if you google IMZDL, you might get lucky.

Let me know how it goes. I know it's a pain to redownload the file, but it may fix your issue.

Ok, I'll redownload the file. Even then, iTunes 10.5 beta 7 is still stuck with the screen telling me that it detects the iPhone in recovery mode. I can't just click "ok" and try to do another restore. Even if I close iTunes and or restart the computer, I still see that message and can't click "ok". It won't matter if I download the OS again or not because I can't even click "restore" and restore to a different version of iOS 5.

Where can one get the files for Windows 7?

All the links I find are for .dmg files...

Use the wonderful 7z compression utility.

First open up the dmg file, extract the largest (i think it is h2. something).
Then, use 7z to extract that file.

There should be an iOS5 folder that contains the ipsw file.

Updated both my iPhone & iPad last night and both went pretty smooth. The responsiveness of iOS 5 is great. Now I'm just waiting on the launch of iCloud so I can migrate my ME account.

This worked great! :D

What about iTunes though?

When I do that, I get a .pkg file.

You must have downloaded the Mac version.

You need the specific Windows version.
In my case it was Beta 10.5 v7 x64 for Win7 (I think).
The Mac version is up to v9 (I think again).

The file, itunesetup64.exe should be in the compressed file.

I did the iOS 5 GM install last night and everything went smoothly on my iPhone 4.

The only thing I am missing are Apple's stock wallpapers (earth, chalkboard, water).
Any way to get them back?

Can also use TransMac....it works great.

What went wrong? I have them all. Just upgraded a few hours ago.

I got a "This Device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program blah, blah, blah." this is not even my phone, its my brothers. can anyone help me out?

Just upgraded to iOS 5 GM. Does it now sync in the background on both wireless and cable? and if my iPhone is both connected to the same wireless connection as my mac and connected to my mac via cable, will it sync by cable or wireless? Obviously I would want it to sync by cable since it's faster

One or the other. If you turn on iCloud in settings, it tells you it will not sync to your computer now. I like it on my machine.

I was able to use PowerISO in Windows to open the DMG file to extract the .ipsw file. My iTunes version says 10.5.0.113. Even though I downloaded the beta 7 of iTunes it does not look correct. What should the version say for Windows 64 bit?

i DL'ed itunes 10.5 beta 7 from the net and after install and setup, it said the said thing. (itunes 10.5.0.113) i tried the shift restore anyway and it worked 2nd time around. I had the error 3194 the first time, had to get my host files to stop from TU. ;) 2nd time worked flawlessly.
