Making a better entertainment system than Apple does is for sure possible. Do I trust GM to do it? Nope.

Yep car play is limited. But light years better than what we had or will get. I don’t blame car manufacturers for seeing the light but I’m not willing to pay 50k plus to see their light. Too late.

Sell users' data is very lucrative to car companies
This is the driving reason behind it. GM treats their data collection different for electric vehicles. There is no opt out in data sharing/selling. They specifically sell your driving habits data to insurance providers. That data and how it is used has been proven to be inaccurate. Nothing is done to regulate this "innovation" in business practices. They see this as a revenue stream for their domestic business that has a financing bubble/default problem in the near term future.

Like most questionable business decisions, it is driven by the perceived notion that profit for investors and the company is more important than the customer and wider public's financial and societal health. Insurance goes up at a micro and macro level for people with the added benefit of breaching the trust of the consumers who assume that since they haven't done this in the past, they wouldn't in the future.

Thank goodness GM are so useless that they don’t even sell cars in New Zealand and I won’t have to bother ignoring them :)

I don’t think they sell in any RHD markets. They sold opal/vauxhall and closed Holden and went back to making 17 litre engines with 3.5 BHP for “car guys”

I googled "what percentage of drivers want car play?" Here is the result:

"While survey results vary, a 2024 McKinsey & Co. survey found that roughly one-third of global car buyers would make a lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto a "deal-breaker". However, other surveys show even higher percentages of drivers who prefer or want these systems. For example, a 2023 McKinsey survey found that nearly half of global car buyers would not purchase a vehicle lacking smartphone integration, and Apple claims 79% of car buyers they studied wanted it."

Plus, when you get customers with modern smart phones, you're likely getting customers who are slightly better off financially.

By the way, great user name H.E. Pennypacker! Are you sure you're not Dr. Van Nostrand?
I looked into the McKinsey numbers 30,000 respondents is only 0.002% of the world’s 1 billon plus drivers, but it’s still a valid sample. What stood out to me is this about one-third say they wouldn’t buy a car without CarPlay/Android Auto, but saying it and actually walking away at the dealership are two very different things. I love CarPlay it’s awesome but I still think the majority of buyers don’t actually care enough to kill a deal over it as long as their phone connects and works in some way. Smartphone integration matters, sure, but I don’t believe it’s the make-or-break factor people claim it is at least for the majority of the population.

what I want to know is if your car currently has carplay will it be removed with a future update? I am currently interested in a GM product but if that were the case it would rule it out

It will be curious to see if the rental companies bail on GM because customers do want to be able to interface their phones with the rental cars. I will choose a vehicle that is known to be compatible.

General Motors began phasing out support for CarPlay in its electric vehicles back in 2023, leading to complaints from iPhone users, but the company has no plans to back down.

In fact, GM is going further and plans to remove CarPlay from all future gas vehicles, too. In an interview with The Verge, GM CEO Mary Barra said that the company opted to prioritize its platform for EVs, but the change will eventually expand across the entire GM portfolio.

When asked if users should expect that new gas cars will not support "smartphone projection" for CarPlay or Android Auto, Barra said "I think that's the right expectation. Yes."

GM Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson suggested that GM's decision to embrace its own system is a "very Jobsian approach to things" that he likened to phasing out the disk drive.

Anderson said that GM's in-house infotainment option offers a "much more immersive environment" and can "do so many more things" than CarPlay.

In EVs, General Motors transitioned to an infotainment system that it previously called "Ultifi." GM said that eliminating Apple CarPlay gave it access to direct integrations and information that it needed for its electric vehicle line, plus the company claimed that an in-house unified solution was the better option for consumers.

Starting with the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, GM is rolling out a centralized vehicle computing system that it says will overhaul how GM vehicles are built and how they can be updated over time. GM will share software across its portfolio, including all electric and gas-powered vehicles produced by its GMC, Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac brands.

Lol

Facebook didn’t exist when Apple ditched the floppy drive.

Neither did forums. It was Usenet

Did they change since 2020? I have a GM truck with navigation and it works without paying anything. I do not have an OnStar subscription either.

The map is on an SD card. It's better than I thought it would be as it even has many Forest Service roads on it.

Yes. It seems like all the manufacturers have moved (are moving) from local navigation to connected navigation beginning in the 2023-2024 time-frame. Current 2026 Colorado owners manual states that the navigation software is provided by Google Maps and that it relies on a subscription data plan.

I don't know what they are doing and they don't either.

I would never buy a vehicle without CarPlay and Android Auto support, for resale purposes and future proofing

I currently have a leased Blazer EV. I was not careful in selecting the car and it was only after I took possession that I realized there was no CarPlay. I had CarPlay in my Volt which had died. I will not be buying any GM product in 2027 when the lease is up. Bad enough I have GM scraping all my data via On-Star (I am not subscribed but it still works) but now I have Google looking over my shoulder whenever I use the on board navigation. The last straw was when I received a text and Google wanted permission to read all my text messages.

Why would you buy a GM electric car? Outside of maybe Hundai buying am electric from a company that doesnt have them as their only focus seems crazy. I moved to all Teslas (because of self driving, I dont really like electric) but if I were to get a non self driving car it would need to have CarPlay.
