Going from 500GB to 1TB in my Unibody MacBook!

grrr....

So buying this wouldn't work?

That's annoying because what I would like is 1tb in my macbook and my current 250gb in a portable case. Was going to swap over the 1tb passport and 250gb internal... Anyone happen to know if it works in the old wd passport models? 500gb ones link here

I sort of need 1tb to ovoid more upgrades in future... Anyone like to guess when prices will drop or when a competitors product would come on the market that would work by swapping out the drives? (1tb for 250gb)

Other option is just buying this and have a 250gb drive lying around

Look forward to your answers
Luke.

WD just released their 750gb 9.5mm drive. It was $109 on newegg last time I checked. I know its not 1tb, but its the closest thing your gonna get (for right now)

I'm waiting for somebody else to use an optibay for another WD10TPVT and see the RAID-0 Performance of 2TB in (at best) a 13" MBP :p

Does anyone know if this 12.5mm drive will fit into the older white macbooks? (MacBook4,1 to be exact)

nope, sorry. it only fits the 17" Pre-Unibody Macbook Pro and the unibody MBPs. Better get that nice 750GB WD 9mm ;-)

P.S.: does it fit Unibody Macbook White? Got one lying around here...

Which won't fit anything but a unibody 17" MBP ... the 750Gb 9.5 is the best option right now for any MBP/MB, unless you have a 17"

Huh? This whole thread is about the fact 12.5mm drives fit into unibody macbooks and there proof here so what are you talking about?

Now I've got to decide which capacity I want!

500GB for £55
500GB Passport (old model) for £78 (and swap drives)
750GB for £100 or
1TB for £140

And... I have 2GB RAM
3GB total (2GB stick) for £47
4GB total (x2 2GB sticks) for £94

I will probably use whatever I get with all my music, RAW photos, CAD models and stuff... hmmm
RAM wise, RAW editing, CS4 (soon CS5), CAD software, rendering etc...

is this f'sure....i have a late-2006 17" macbook pro (aluminium, not unibody)

i'd love to get hold of one of these to replace the piece'o'poo seagate 500g7200 drive i fitted a few months back....it is a 'green' drive i think...keeps parking, randomly , a couple of times per minute causing stuttering when re-spinning......i thought it was the fastest, largest capacity drive on the market but it's 'crippled' by this behaviour.....i didn't realise that it was an 'efficient' drive before buying it, so i guess the fault is mine....now , it will be assigned to data backup/archive duties, only....lame !! :(

please tell me this WD monster doesn't suffer the same issue ?? :)

Just wondering
If them drives were to be installed in a macbook, would you just use say, time capsule to restore it back to how it was on the old hard drive?
Or am i missing a lot here?

Your exactly right. When you boot from the SL DVD after the new HDD has been installed. Go to "Utilities" (I think), and click "restore from Time Machine". Easy as that. It will basically clone your new HDD to match the old one from your last backup date/time.

Yes it will fit in your 13" MBP

I bought my drive off of Amazon because they had the lowest price, so I'm sure you can get it in the UK.

And yes, just insert the DVD, shut down your Mac, swap the HDDs, and boot from the DVD (hold down C while booting). Pretty straight-forward from there.

Chase, I guess its a dumb question but when you restore from time machine its restores the mac OX as well right?

the battery will last less for sure , more heat , who need 1tb on the go ??
nowadays u can get a external hard drive smaller than an ipod classic with 500gb or even 1tb..

The battery lasts the same.

You won't be asking that question in a few years when 1TB is standard.

So I assume no issues with putting this into the new 13" MBP? And if I just want to install from scratch I just have to insert the disk say before I take out the old HDD and it will just install a clean copy on this new HDD?

No issues whatsoever. Got my first mac (13" mbp 2.4) on Monday, and swapped out the drives today. I used "carbon copy cloner" (free, simple, and awesome) and a cheap external enclosure to clone my current drive to the new drive. Then I powered down, and swapped the drives. Turned it back on, and voila! Good to go 100%. Took about an hour in total for the cloning and the actual swap.

Now I use the drive that came with my mbp in that cheap enclosure ($10 on newegg) as simple backup drive.

WD drives using AFT (Advanced Format Technology)

A few questions for you:

1.) What type of user are you? i.e. What apps do you typically run? (interested in whether or not you're taxing the random read/write, day to day)

2.) WD Advanced Format Technology (AFT)
Those new WD drives use the new AFT system to allow for 1TB in that format. The system is known to cause problems with Windows XP due to WinXP disk partitioning (article here: http://hothardware.com/Articles/WDs...Format-Windows-XP-Users-Pay-Attention/?page=1).

Have you tried to run WinXP (or any other OS) in Parallels and run into any problems? If so, did you install the WD software solution for the partition issue? If so number 2, does that have any negative taxing effect on CPU performance?

Thanks so much. If it loves up to expectations, I'll be upgrading my brand new Spring 2010 15" MacBook Pro Core i7 post haste!

Cheers~

The WD drives may pride themselves on their 'vibration control' but I must say that my only negative observation I have with my 1TB drive is that you can feel a slight vibration / buzz through the case at all times. The vibration does not translate into noise, nor does it vary with read/write activity, but it is noticeable all the same.

Compared to some laptops its pretty minor and I am glad the machine is effectively silent, but I do envy those with the same drive that have zero vibration.

I did same, but my performance numbers don't match yours...

Not sure if I have a defective drive or firmware or did not init properly....

The sequential results are similar, but the random results are about 1/2 the original poster on this thread. Wondering if I should do something different other than returning the drive.
