I think 4.3" would be the sweet spot. 4.7" seems large. 4" seems a little small.

Here are a couple of comparison pictures.

The first compares the 5s to the 6 and the Z1 compact which has a 4.3" screen
The second compares the 5s to the 6 and a Samsung Galaxy Alpha which is a 4.7" screen like the iPhone

As you can see, the Z1 compact is comparable in size to the 5s and the Alpha, whilst bigger than the 5s, is quite a bit smaller than the 6.

Basically, I think there is plenty of scope for Apple to reduce the size of the phone whilst keeping the 4.7" screen

Actually the Z3 compact just recently came out which has a 4.7' display in the same form factor as the Z1 compact :)

In the picture below can really see the size difference between the 4.7-inch Z3 compact and the 4.7' iPhone 6

So I agree, there are lots of ways for Apple to increase the screen size while keeping the overall size down to a 5s range.

Thanks for that - I didn't realise the Z3 compact was even smaller than the Z1 compact (lighter and thinner) - that's insanely small for a 4.7" phone!

I've been using the 6 all weekend but just could not get on with it. I just don't like the feel of it. It's too thin to pick up easily from a table with one hand. It can't be easily used with one hand. I dropped it twice, it's not as easy to grip. It is too large in my jeans pocket.

I've gone back to my 5S and I have to say when apply designed this they really got it right. Perfect size and shape. Feels solid, robust and great in the hand. It looks better IMO.

I swear if the 5 had come after the 6 people would be raving about it.

Is the 5 likely to be updated with the latest hardware?

I see Apple offering 3 choices in the iPhone 7 iteration, perhaps offering a 4" if the market demands it. Apple offered 2 choices this year, why not 3 down the line.

The naysayers aren't thinking this through. It'll be updated for as long as they're still selling the 5s, as they're doing.

yeah, because they did it with the 3, 3GS, 4, 4S, and the 5

do you guys know apple at all?

----------

That is not true for everybody. They should continue having a 4 inch phone or they will lose a lot of their customers. A lot of business customers will go back to blackberry.

lol how is the pay at blackberry?

----------

I only upgraded to a 6 because I need the zoom feature (aging sucks), and it's great. But my 5s was much, much easier for me to use one handed, and I use my phone one-handed all the time. It's doable with the 6, but I'm more concerned about dropping it now.

But if Apple does not update the 5s, my wife will keep her 5s until it no longer works, because the 6 is just too big for her. Unfortunately, it's very hard for me to see Apple making any further investment in phones with 4" screens, which is too bad.

As popular as the 6 and 6 Plus have been, I still think that there is a significant number of folks who prefer a smaller phone.

i loved the 3.5" iPhones, i detested the 4", got em and cant go back. im sure it will be the same as the 6

you have more real estate, and it isnt THAT much bigger, honestly with th design i think its more proportionate.

the 5 and 5S looked to lanky and skinny, it needed to be wider

The problem with doing that is the increased chance of weakness in the build.

I really do like how the 4 and 5 feel in the hand, I think it was the best design so far, and second nature when using them in my hand.

iPhone6 is slippery, I know there are cases, but I like my iPhones without cases, and never use cases.

Try something like ArmorSuit skin. Inexpensive but very effective if you like a naked iPhone. Improves grip and feel 200% without more bulk. I use it on my phone and Pad and love it.

A 4.7" android phone with software buttons only has a 4.3" usable area. Yes the buttons hide while playing videos but you will see them most of the time.

I had the G3 and while it has a 5.5" screen it looks much smaller once you account for the software buttons and the giant notification bar. I exchanged it for an iPhone 6 and the 4.7" is not a significant downgrade in usable screen space.

That's a good point but still think they could have fitted a 5" screen into it without increasing the size of the six further.

Gone back to my 5S. God it's good! Will they update it?

I don't see them jumping an "s" series. Apple is most likely, given their track record, going to update the internals to the 6 and 6+

This is a really ridiculous statement considering where Blackberry is today. You might as-well have said business customers would go back to a Palm Pilot.

Yes, to Blackberry. Where this monstrosity will greet them with open arms.

My tastes disagree with most peoples' I guess. I'm returning my iPhone 6 and going back to my original 5. The 5S is faster with TouchID, but not worth a 2 year commitment in my opinion, for year old specs.

I'll wait until next year to see if they revamp the 5S internals, or wait to see if the Z3 comes to Verizon.

Maybe Apple made it so thin because most people put a case on their phones, and now it won't be so bulky, maybe the same as a caseless iPhone 5. So put an Apple case on it, no excuse for 'too thin' or 'too smooth'. That's what I was planning to do with the 6+ when I get it, even before these first reviews came out.

----------

Apple does still have a 4" phone - it's called an 8GB 5s.

No 5c comes in 8GB while 5s comes in 16GB and 32GB.

This is the thing. Apple can still achieve bigger screen size with a smaller form factor, and that is likely exactly where they will go. They now made the things about as thin as possible given current battery tech. What they need to do next is get rid of the stupid god-awful bezels at the top and bottom and trim those down. It is ridiculous that the 6+ with its 5.5" screen has to be longer than the Note3/Note4 with its 5.7" screen size.

But, Apple has gotta leave something for their next iteration of phone for people to get excited about.

If you haven't noticed, from iPhone 4 to 5 the screen has gone bigger by being taller. So that's why an iPhone would be taller than other phones with the same screen size, but not the same dimensions.

The Z3 Compact has a 4.6 in screen FYI. Moto X 2013 has a 4.7 in screen and is even smaller though.

Picked the 5S because the Androids were too big

This is an interesting thread. I just bought (last Friday when the 6 and 6+ came out) a 5S. It's my first iPhone (and first Apple product). I picked it because T-Mobile didn't offer any other high-power phone that wasn't too big.

I'm a long-time BlackBerry and Android user and for the past year I've carried a Galaxy S4 and then a Note 3. I understand that a lot of people love the big screens, especially when their phone is the only device they have. For me, they are just too big to be truly useful.

I loved the Note 3 for the first month or so, then I noticed I started to leave it in the car when I went somewhere and didn't have it when I needed it. I'm used to carrying a phone in my shirt pocket, or sometimes my front pants pocket, but the Note dragged my shirt down and looked odd. I always felt it protruded too much and made movement unnatural in my slacks (plus I always worried about about knocking into something and breaking it). I like using a phone with one hand when on the move. Like in the grocery store, I'm pushing a cart with one hand and texting my wife about what else she wants me to bring home. Impossible with the Note, and forever having the feeling that it's about to drop out of my hand and shatter my $700 investment. (You put a case on it and it's even more unwieldy).

I don't blame anyone for loving their big screens; they really have a place. But I've got an 8 inch tablet (a Galaxy Note 8) for when I need the big screen. When I'm on the go, I want something I can slip in my shirt pocket and use with one hand.

I think there is a market for smaller phones (4.5 inches or under works for me. The 5S is just right in my hand). I think some people will find the bigger phones a little too much of a good thing.

Oh, and while BlackBerry will never have the market share of Apple, what they have done with OS10.3 is very impressive and some hard-core business people are going to love the new Passport. As a lawyer, I'm very attracted to the Q20 "Classic" that is expected to come out in November. I think BlackBerry will be successful with the business crowd.
