Wait, didn’t the iPhone 11 sell for $699 on release and the iPhone 12 is $799? Add $40 for adapter and headphones. That’s $140 increase. 20% increase.

With tech, you expect prices to either go down over time or stay constant, with new/updated features.
Doesn't the iphone 12 mini start at $699? So the bottom end of the lineup is the same while the iphone 12 pro max costs the same as an iphone 11 pro max...$1099.

Add $0 for the adapter and headphones as I have a least 5 spare adapters and 3 spare pair of earpods. If you need I can maybe drop ship to you...for half price plus shipping. o_O

I'm not sure where you think that the price of tech either goes down or stays constant. OLD tech goes down or stays constant. New tech is correspondingly more expensive.

I’m extremely interested in tech (working in tech for several decades) and I have no idea who or what MKBHD is! Time to go do a bit of research...

He’s a tech YouTuber. Some of his videos are entertaining but he’s not on my top 10 list of what I watch on YouTube. He has a lot of power with the companies because of his subscriber count

I have like 5 usb-c chargers and 3 Macs with usb-c ports. I have about 12 regular usb chargers and lots of usb-a to lightning cables. I haven't even opened the last set that came with my iPhone 11 pro.

You realze this was GMA targeted to a general audience rather than techies right? Normal people aren't interested in that stuff. They want selfies!
Yea I'm glad they put it here and mentioned no charging brick. So now the laymen will be prepared to get one if they don't already have it instead of being blindsided

We will just have to agree to disagree. The 12 mini has a smaller screen and less battery capacity than the 11. For me, the better comparison is the iPhone 12 to the iPhone 11. And yes, in general, I expect tech to advance each year such that you can get better products for the same price as the previous year.

Okay I'll accept that Apple may not be doing the recycling themselves but just like going to your local city dump you have to pay a fee to dump your trash. It's costing someone money to do the recycling. There is definitely some cost involved. Also keep in mind even if there is no money involved on Apple's part can you imagine how much trouble it is for any company to take back chargers from customers? I have a drawer full of them.

The member @russell_314 was mentioning earlier to limit the amount of adapter trade-ins but customers scam companies and that wouldn't work. For example, customer JOHN was told by Apple that he can trade-in a maximum of two adapters per household. Well customer JOHN will have his wife and their kids do trade-ins under different Apple I.D's in order to get rid of the pile of adapters they have in their household and they will get credit for each. This ruins it for honest customers.

That's why it's not "financially" worth it to Apple or any company to have a trade-in program for adapters.
Maybe they could tie the trade-in of adapters iPhone purchases. Basically you buy a new iPhone and then you get the trade-in one or two adapters. I understand that some people will try to game the system and ruin it for everyone else but it would be nice If if Apple could implement some type of recycling program. You’re probably right that they won’t just avoid the headache but it would be nice

Done. We officially disagree.

I do not expect the price of new tech to be constant, to be fair tech covers a broad range of things. Some examples: oled panels are still correspondingly more expensive as seen in oled tvs. Folding phones, the price Galazy Z fold puts the price of some Apple products to shame. Those are some examples. If you might be referring to the 5mm for the a14, again this probably is more expensive than the previous generation, it's just that we don't know the per chip price.

Wireless charging also isn’t exactly environment-friendly, given its poor power efficiency. I’m not saying it shouldn’t exist, just that there’s some cognitive dissonance with Apple regarding the environment topic.
I wish they would explain all the MagSafe more. Maybe it is more efficient since the magnets hold it in the exact spot? And do you have to use a Mag Case with the Mag charge or will thinner normal cases still work? This and Fitness+ One they've left out so much important info

In the longer run, having neatly spaced and round-ish price points is probably a larger marketing benefit for Apple than having to deal with the backlash of people feeling the removal of these items should have resulted in a price reduction. But then again, these neat price points really only exist in the U.S. which by now represent only about 40% of their sales volume.
Pretty much the same, arguably neat!, price points exist in the UK.

Difference is the currency sign represents GBP rather than USD.

As those old power adapters have no value, and Apple would be losing money buying them from customers, why would Apple do that? Apple would need to increase the price of the phone to compensate.
That would prove more that they actually care about the environment if they take a financial hit instead of the customers. I just think you should just be able to trade As for a C, not generic credit.

He probably has but can't post about it yet.

Yeah a lot of tech sites and prominent YouTubers will likely post videos next Thursday when the embargo’s likely lift. Each with “I’ve been using the iPhone 12 for about a week now...”

Also I love that literally the first thing she talks about is magnetically clipping a card holder to the phone. It’s actually really cute and might sell more units to non tech folks more than spec sheets ever could.

Yes the only time I watch YT is for music videos or how tos if I don't know how to do something

Though that is a lucky, most likely temporary coincidence. The currency rate, adjusted for taxes and other things, just happens to be at right level at the moment. That is likely to change sooner or later.

It has been the case far too much of the time. Even when GBP has had a significantly higher value against USD than at present.

I'd suggest most in the UK have long assumed equivalence for many products, not just Apple. And felt really lucky if we have seen a lower price than that implies.

(Though I do hear that the sales tax system in the USA can make the price actually paid higher than the list price. Whereas in the UK our nearest equivalent, Value Added Tax, is consistent and must be included in published prices unless expressly for business purchases.)

Apples environmental reasoning makes absolutely no sense to me. It’s like an organisation ending its company car provision in order to reduce its carbon footprint only to replace it with a cash allowance. Achieves its own targets and moves the carbon decision onto the employee. It’s a shift in the ownership and not the environmental impact. These should have been USB A to Lightning cables as most purchasers won’t check and will find themselves buying an Apple block to go with their shiny new phone....or perhaps a third party...either way, clear profiteering from a company I admire...probably just a little less now :(

yup, i bought so many 11 Pros so my house is overhelmed by the USB-C power bricks
Literally found a USB-C brick at the bottom of my cereal bowl this morning and thought, “Holy hell, I can’t keep living like this!” Thank god for upstanding, environmentally conscious companies like Apple.

You blantantly ignore the fact a significant share of the buyers will not buy a charging brick because they already have enough charging ports (be it on standalone chargers or their computer or even their sofa).

How dare Apple ever change ports. People might too inattendent and buy the wrong cable or power brick.

Yup. The Buttload of USB-C chargers in my home is overwhelming so I‘m glad that Apple is doing something for the Environment by removing the power brick. /s

You either have the charger that came with a device so can't charge 2 things at once OR ya brought extra chargers thus nullifying any dubious environmental gains. The most popular iPhone models came with a usb-a charger while the latest models come with usb-c cables 🤷‍♂️ Just look at the extra accessories Apple alone has added to the market for the iPhone 12's magnets. Factor in 3rd party offerings & it's obvious this will result in increased environmental impact, not reduced. ie Ya got duped & Mother Nature gets dumped.

The portion where the Apple employee talked about the charger removal was super cringe. You can tell the hosts were not having it.

Apple is a company that relies on people's trust. Their customers trust them, that's their forte. This debacle isn't doing wonders in that regard because they are clearly lying to our faces and everyone knows it. Just admit you did it to cut costs.
when apple axed the headphone adapter, the world ended.... samsung mocked them. Guess who copied that. Give samsung 6 months tops and they'll follow suite.
