Not gonna happen. Apple isn't a humanitarian. They can't change the world. They are only a tech company. Best they can do is to prevent landfill waste moving forward. It would be an absolute nightmare taking back old adapters especially since 1 customer alone would have a box full of them.
You would have to have limits just like anything. Only Apple branded adapters and a limited number per customer that gives not cash but a credit. I'm not saying they will do it but I think with the right restrictions so people don't try to game the system it could work.

You're correct that Apple might lose some money but I don't think it would be a full retail price exchange. Maybe $7 credit towards a new adapter.
LOL a $7 credit? No. You wouldn't even get 5 cents. They aren't worth anything. Apple won't even give credit for a trade-in of an iPhone 6 Plus. They just recycle it for the customer.

That’s the general public for you. While we obsess over 120Hz and Ppi the regular person is like “magnets 😍”
Yes so much! I have a friend that bought a laptop. Why this specific laptop out of all the ones at the store. Processor, RAM, GPU, display? No because it's pink...

Normal consumers aren't looking at numbers. Does it work? Does it work well? Is it pretty?

I think you misunderstood my post. I'm stating a hypothetical thing that Apple could do. I didn't say they are/ going to do/ would do or it would make a profit.

I get your point, but while Apple would do the right thing and limit the amount of trade-ins the customer won't do the right thing. I think we both can agree that customers pull scams every day of the week to get over.

Not sure if you remember when Apple ran low on batteries for the 2012 MacBook Pro's and offered customers a free battery replacement if they waited 2-3 months for them get more in stock? Apple also offered customers to pay the $199 USD price of a battery replacement and they would take back the customers 2012/2013 MBP and give them a 2016 or 2017 MBP? Well those scamming customers ruined the program for everyone by going on Ebay and buying old broken 2012/2013 MBP's and paid the $199USD to Apple to get a new machine they really weren't entitled to. They scammed Apple because the program was for original owners. Apple shut the program down earlier than expected.

I didn't misunderstand. All any of us are doing here is creating hypotheticals. I'm just providing a reality. What you're not including in your hypothetical is the fact that Apple has to spend money recycling and it cost them a great deal more to do that so any amount of a credit wouldn't be financially sane based on recycling costs.

Agreed there are so many things people will do to scam. There was a guy buying phones, removing parts from them, then returning them. This is why they have limits on purchases and returns. In a perfect world Apple could just ask "Do you have a charging adapter" at checkout and people could honestly say yes or no. The people that needed one would get one and there would be no e-waste. In the real world everyone would lie to get a free charging adapter. Bad people make it harder for the rest of us but you have to keep on going. Apple needs to figure a balance between meeting customers needs and helping the environment. Maybe they figure that is where they are now but I think there's always room for improvement.

The question is what they recycle. Chargers will have probably never been recycled by Apple. So there was no cost.

Ha, ha. If you want to burn down your house ...
There's a guy on YouTube with the name bigclive something and he does videos going into the weeds about dodgey charging adapters. After you watch a few of those really boring but interesting to me videos you won't buy no name adapters.

They recycle existing iPhones and other Apple devices. I bet the cost to break down these devices far exceeds the worth of any raw material they get. Yes Apple is a for profit company but they do things that help the environment and might not be the best financial choice. Sure it's cheaper to toss things in a landfill but Apple doesn't work like that.

Okay I'll accept that Apple may not be doing the recycling themselves but just like going to your local city dump you have to pay a fee to dump your trash. It's costing someone money to do the recycling. There is definitely some cost involved. Also keep in mind even if there is no money involved on Apple's part can you imagine how much trouble it is for any company to take back chargers from customers? I have a drawer full of them.

The member @russell_314 was mentioning earlier to limit the amount of adapter trade-ins but customers scam companies and that wouldn't work. For example, customer JOHN was told by Apple that he can trade-in a maximum of two adapters per household. Well customer JOHN will have his wife and their kids do trade-ins under different Apple I.D's in order to get rid of the pile of adapters they have in their household and they will get credit for each. This ruins it for honest customers.

That's why it's not "financially" worth it to Apple or any company to have a trade-in program for adapters.

Not that many people have a million USB-C bricks hanging around. Because of that very reason, 75% of the people who buy a new iPhone will have to go BUY a USB-C brick...thereby negating their little environmental spin...

Just going to say it's good to see Becky again. I remember her back to the TechTV days.

That being said, I still am waiting for MKBHD's hands on review. Surprised he hasn't got his hands on one yet.
I was so pleasantly surprised to see her too. Use to pop in for segments on Call for Help. My fondest memory is when she didn’t the showcase about Windows XP and what it meant for the industry. Been trying to find that video.

The portion where the Apple employee talked about the charger removal was super cringe. You can tell the hosts were not having it.

Apple is a company that relies on people's trust. Their customers trust them, that's their forte. This debacle isn't doing wonders in that regard because they are clearly lying to our faces and everyone knows it. Just admit you did it to cut costs.

This reminds of when the University of California tries to justify bringing in more out of state and country students to their flag ship schools (UCLA & Berkley) because it will increase diversity. Yeah, right, because you can't achieve sufficient diversity in California! Bogus. It's a money grab for out of state tuition.

Same thing here. Apple offers up some politically correct environmental justification so they can pad their margins. The thing that bothers me is that, like the UC administration, they are just insulting their customers and constituents. It's the arrogance that bugs me. The idea that they are too cleaver and that we can't see through the BS.

Apple can make this right by offering a $40 gift card with each iPhone purchase to cover adapter, headphones, or whatever else the customer wants.

What BS? Seems like a win-win to me. The win for the customer is the price of the iphone 12 didn't go up, and the environment is being saved...win for Apple. I see not insult from Apple to customers.

I would agree with you if the price of the iphone 12 had gone up by 40 dollars. But it stayed flat from last year. So while it might be "nice" for Apple to offer-up a $40 gift card, there is nothing to make right, as I see it.

I don’t get which tree your barking at. Sorry. I am just a regular customer. Apart from the USB-C Brick from my 11 I only have bricks with USB-A. So I would need cables. Or I just buy a new adapter. Also I don’t have any spare adapters because I give them away with the device I give away. It is quite simple. - PS: As being quite an Apple fan this time I must say it’s just marketing. They earn more money. That’s a fact nobody can deny. And I don’t think they will invest this money directly in some environment beneficial way.

I disagree. Most people interested in tech know who he is but most people aren't techies. I guarantee I could ask ten random people on the street who MKBHD is and they would look clueless. I'm not taking away from MKBHD in anyway because he's extremely popular with the tech community but he doesn't even compare with the reach of GMA when it comes to marketing a product.

I’m extremely interested in tech (working in tech for several decades) and I have no idea who or what MKBHD is! Time to go do a bit of research...

There is a whole discussion on this article trying to stop the misinformation you are giving. Just keep using what you have! You have a million type a bricks/cables use them! You have a bonus future type c cable throw it in a drawer and move on with your life.

Wait, didn’t the iPhone 11 sell for $699 on release and the iPhone 12 is $799? Add $40 for adapter and headphones. That’s $140 increase. 20% increase.

With tech, you expect prices to either go down over time or stay constant, with new/updated features.

There are subjectively 'enough' chargers already in circulation - Apple don't need to be pooping out more white bricks, which they don't then want back later. Our planet cannot support endless mindless production at the scale these things are churned out at, plus bigger boxes, plus bigger planes and trucks to move more un-necessary things around. By the million.

'Most' people with an iPhone already have at least one USB-A charger + Lightning cable in their house which they can use if they don't have a spare USB-C charger to hand. 'Some' people buying their first iPhone this year may be mildly inconvenienced by having to buy one of either, but that's outweighed by the greater good. Others will use a wireless Qi or MagSafe charger.

I just wanted to punch that Apple lady in the face. Cringe at that ridiculous response.
“I just figured since everyone has a 5w ****** charger laying around from 2012, they would love to use it with their brand new $1800aud iPhone which has fast charging as a feature”. GTFOH (disclaimer I am not a shareholder)
