Or we can just believe Apple because it does have an environmental impact regardless of what people in the forums imagine their motive was. I mean it's not like Apple has a long track record of making environmentally positive decisions. I don't expect this will bother Apple customers as much as it bothers people on forums. As an Apple customer I'm happy that they're not including extra environmental waste with their products. Now we just have to wait for Android phones to catch up.

Spot on. It's an entry point for the perpetually unhappy to inject a tiny bit of joy into their lives with a good moan-n-whine. A real shame that doesen't seem to last very long.

How is this gonna save the world
It's not going to save the world but millions less phone chargers ending up as e waste is helpful. Not only that but since those were never manufactured that's tons of raw material not mined.

I have to ask. Half the posts in this discussion talk about the million chargers people have but not type c I have to buy a charger. Half the posts are I needed this GMA to be technical.

You all realize your type a cables still charge the phone right!?

If you have a ton of type a cables/chargers you’re good to go!

They include the cable most of you don’t have which should be the one thing everyone applauds!

They included the more expensive cable. I have a million type a cables. They still work!

If you have type c chargers (I have a few) I now have a new cable for fast charging when needed.

We all know that right? We are all super technical on this site.

Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe you all throw out the type a cables and kept the bricks or something.

The one positive thing was that a premium cable was included. Hold onto it if you don’t have type c yet you’ll need it as type c becomes more mainstream. Otherwise carry on. Use what you have and have the charging experience you have had all along.

Let’s sound technical if we are all technical on this site. I have never used the brick in the box and honestly not even the cable I just use the cables I already have from Apple/Anker I probably still have my iPod Touch lightning cable in my kitchen. It still works and will still work on the 12 Pro.

Don’t cry I need a type c brick. You don’t. You don’t need MagSafe either. Just use your cables I know you all have.

If you want fast/fancy charging get a now cheaper brick/MagSafe and use it.

And yes I’ve touted multiple times the new phones could have included a coupon/new phone promotion that if you want a brick you can get one for the first 2-3 months at a Apple Store. That’s something they could have done. They didn’t. But the sky isn’t falling like many of you are painting it.

I think I was referencing their environmental credentials , if they really wanted to help the environment they would switch the lightning port to type c which all the other phones now use and therefore a proprietary cable . Yes that means that old stuff won’t work but most people now use wireless headphones etc so I think this is less of a deal that when they switched to lightning in 2012 and then you wouldn’t need an extra wire if you had an iPad and Mac Pro

My 11 Pro came with Lightning to USB-C cable and appropriate charging block and I've never taken them out of box. I use my old cables and block and they work fine for me - I don't need fast charging and the old cables work with auto for charging and carplay and with Mac Book (not the latest) for full back up etc. I do find it a bit ingenuous for Apple to say you can use old bricks without explaining that old cables and bricks work fine together. Including a cable for which most people will need another device is not nice, to me.If you have a time/place where you need fast charging then get what you need to do it - if not use the old stuff.
I wonder how many people (who don't read all this stuff) will order a 12 and when they get it realize they don't have any way to charge it.

I'll be honest even I have a bad habit of looking at the glass as half empty but regardless of the motive this is a good thing.

People will do stupid stuff so I'm sure there's going to be a first time iPhone buyer out there who orders a phone and doesn't have a way to charge it. I guess he better go to Walmart LOL

That guy said: "the magnet got her" though anything that was said before didn't.
Is it by any chance the magnet Borat mentioned in the first movie? 🤡

Even the hosts of GMA had “wtf” look on their faces when they started talking about no charger and headphones.

True... but then the hosts realized that they have a charger and cable at home... they have a charger and cable in their car... and they have a charger and cable in their dressing room at ABC Studios. Probably multiples of each. And every family member does too.

After their "WTF" look the hosts went about their day as they do every day. I bet they forgot about this before lunch. Their lives won't be interrupted by not having a charger or earbuds in the iPhone 12 box.

I'm the same way. Chargers and cables everywhere. Extras in my travel bag. And guess what... they're all 3rd-party chargers from Anker... because Apple's included single port chargers are dumb. All my chargers have multiple pots to charge multiple devices.

Look... Apple makes a lot of strange decisions. This is yet another. Whaddya gonna do... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just pray that we're not still talking about missing chargers in 4 years the same way we're still talking about missing headphone jacks!

:p

Not gonna lie but we really didn't need this from GMA. The Apple show presented everything. GMA is just regurgitating stuff we already know. I stopped watching GMA years ago. Is this show's ratings so poor that MR needs to share their useless segments? I'll wait for Marquez Brownlee to show it. GMA seriously??🙄

We can agree to disagree and I think you point out something surprising to me.

Macrumors needs to make a PSA that existing type a stuff still works.

If I was Apple I would have stayed this during the keynote. It’s very apparent to me that many people don’t understand this. I can almost say they did it on purpose to let people think they need a new brick. But that’s neither here or there.
I agree. People posting here know the difference. I can already imagine a non techie person unboxing their iPhone, and when they see a "weird cable", no EarPods, plus no charger for the new cable, unable to plug it to their old one...while this seems as too dramatic for us posting here, when my friend bought AirPods Pro he called me asking how is he going to charge his new AirPods when he doesn't have an "adapter" for the new cable. He was pissed lol

That magnet didn’t seem very strong on that credit card wallet? She took it off so easily and even managed to move it around
Can't be certain but the surface area of the internal magnet is fixed but the external mating magnet is not. The max magnetism will be if the mating magnet is the same surface area. Accessory makers can adjust the strength of the magnetism by decreasing the surface area of the mating magnet.

I'm not sure it's a big deal because most folks are using wireless charging these days. Ear Buds will only impact new iPhones users as mostly everyone else has air pods or previous buds. Apple does need to do the right thing and lower the price on those items individually in case folks want to get them.

Apple must have been reading your mind because they did just that! Now I think perhaps a trade in program where you can turn in old USB-A adapters in for a credit would be great!

This post is ridiculous. There is a booklet inside of every iPhone and Apple product telling the customer how to charge them. If your friend neglects to read included instructions after spends $$$$ on an AirPods then don't blame Apple for it.

The most you would get would be a donation receipt. Old adapters are worth nothing. It would cost more to recycle them to prevent landfill pile up.

So how are they focused on being environmentally friendly if the iPhone still uses lightning? In a year or two a lot of these usb-c to lightning cables will end up in landfill once Apple changes that.

As those old power adapters have no value, and Apple would be losing money buying them from customers, why would Apple do that? Apple would need to increase the price of the phone to compensate.

I can see Apple doing do it to get people to buy the Apple USB-C charing brick versus Anker, Aukey, AmazonBasics, gas station special, etc.
And to use it as good pro-environment PR "we removed X tons of old out of date charging bricks last quarter."

What you all need to understand is that a tech segment on a morning show like GMA is not intended for techies. Think of the least tech savvy person you know and that's basically who they're talking to. It's just, "Look at the new iPhone! It's fast and it has pretty colours! Ooh, ahh!" It's for the people who wouldn't have even known there's a new iPhone otherwise, not people like us who can already tell you how many pixels are in the display and how many cores the GPU has, etc.

Obviously. I should have labeled my post as sarcasm. ;)

You're correct that Apple might lose some money but I don't think it would be a full retail price exchange. Maybe $7 credit towards a new adapter.

It wasn't really a first look. Sure she was holding them in her hands, but lets see some 5G speed tests or something.

The only thing they were excited about were the magnets.

Not gonna happen. Apple isn't a humanitarian. They can't change the world. They are only a tech company. Best they can do is to prevent landfill waste moving forward. It would be an absolute nightmare taking back old adapters especially since 1 customer alone would have a box full of them.
